One of the waters he will be talking about is Omack Lake, which has a very good spawning population of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. Joe is also the author of the book Tying Glass Bead Flies. Page 4 The Angler s Line March 2016 Prospects By Wes Ong Truckee River: Look for the slower water East of town to hold fish. This is what I wrote last year but I can t be positive if there are any fish left east of town. The water was so low during the summer last year. The recent storms have got the river up and colored, also the warm weather a couple of weeks ago got some fish on redds. Make sure you do not walk on them. Fishing an egg pattern below them could be productive. Hinkson Slough: Generally the bite gets better as the weather turns milder. No one has told me if the fish out in February was good or not. Squaw Creek Res. If we get some sunny weather catch rates should be in the double digits., if there is some open water. All types of presentation will work, sinking line, or floating line in the shallow water. Small light colored water boatman has done well in the past. Pyramid Lake: Fishing this winter is better than I have seen in the past! Nets have been yielding some good size fish with a few fishers doing well and the rest just average, a couple of fish a day. Catch rates will increase this month with the fish moving in close. Lots of stuff will work, don t get stuck on any one fly. The Net area is already packed so you may have to find different beaches to fish. Consequence of big fish and social media! East Walker River: Always check the flows before you go down to make sure they have been steady for at least a couple of days. This month there should be a stonefly hatch toward the end of the month. Use a golden stone nymph or fish the dries with a Stimulator. If that doesn t work there should be some good beatis action in the afternoons. Indian Creek Res. Why this lake yields large fish I have no clue but the fish here run in the 3 pound range and are common. Ice should be off the lake this month and with a little warm weather this lake should cut loose. Eastern Nevada: Most of the fisheries over here have been iced over for most of the winter. The Marsh may have some open water this month with some open water at the fingers in the Collection Ditch. Call before you go. Other Waters: Baum Lake, Lake Amador, by Ione California or the American River for steelhead, combat fishing if you go on a weekend. Bishop area, Lower Owens and Pleasant Valley Reservoir are also a good winter fishery. New License Year for Nevada! Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers Page 5 Clear Stretch Pheasant Tail Nymph The Pheasant Tail nymph is a very popular nymph imitation used to mimic a large variety of aquatic insect larvae. Originally created in 1958 by Frank Sawyer, an English river keeper. Many variations have been developed over the years. I find this stillwater variation very effective when using a floating line and retrieved slowly in shallow areas near sunken weed beds. Hook: #12 - #16, Your favorite 1X long nymph hook. Thread: Rusty Brown, 8/0 or 6/0 Tail: Pheasant Tail fibers, 5-6 Body: Rusty Brown thread underbody and Clear Stretch bead & jewelry cord - 1mm Thorax: Ice Dub Rusty Brown Wing case: Pheasant Tails fibers Legs: Pheasant Tail fibers, 8-10 1. Start thread near hook eye and build up a tapered underbody. 2. Tie in tail, length of hook shank. To ensure smooth underbody secure fibers by wrapping thread forward to thorax area before trimming. 3. Wrap thread back to hook bend and tie in Clear Stretch line. Wrap thread forward to thorax area. 4. Keeping tension on Clear Stretch wrap forward to thorax area secure and trim. 5. Tie in wing case fibers and trim excess. 6. Dub the thorax. 7. Pull wing case fibers forward over thorax and secure. 8. Divide fiber tips equally, fold back along each side creating legs and secure. 9. Form a neat head and whip finish. I sometimes use Peacock herl for the thorax. Mike O Brien
Page 6 Cabela s Spring Great Outdoor Days March 12 th & 13 th, 2016 The Angler s Line Cabela s will be promoting the Truckee River Flyfishers in their published event schedule. Sunday afternoon specifically features Flies that work at Pyramid Lake. This is a great opportunity to promote the club and have a great time interacting with prospective new members, not to mention that Cabela s and Jamie Klund are great supporters of the club. Please contact Wes Ong at: 775-530-0725 to book a slot. Annual Banquet The Annual Banquet will be March 19 th, see next pager for details. Tickets for dinner are $40, you can purchase tickets through the 6 th of March at Cabela s, the Sportsmen s Warehouse, Reno Fly Shop or Orvis. After Sunday March 6 th you can contact Tom Smith at 741-8825 or edsontiger@aol.com for tickets. The Annual Pyramid Lake Fishout will on Sunday, April 17 th. You guessed it, it will be at Pyramid Lake and we will have lunch at Crosby s, have a big fish contest, hope there are some big fish caught this year, Tom Smith won it last year with a 20 fish, (thought this was supposed to be big fish contest). Don t forget to renew your membership, you have to be a current member to participate in the fishing contest and attend the Pyramid Fishout and lunch. Hinkson Slough Fishout, held on February 20 th, there were seven club members who attended. Jimmy Greenhalgh caught the most fish (5) and Jerry Harding caught the largest (17 inches). NDOW had just planted 3000 nine to 10 inch rainbows and these were the majority of the fish caught. Fishing should improve with warmer temps. April 20, General Membership Meeting. This meeting will feature Joe Kopp, he works for Berkley and is an expert on lines, he will be talking about the differences in line, fluorocarbon as to monofilament, he will demonstrate knots and can magnify knots and display them on a screen so we can see the imperfections. He will bring a knot and line testing machine. This in a great opportunity to see how your knots perform and if there is a better knot or line that you should be using.
Volunteers ALWAYS Needed NDOW regularly has volunteer opportunities check out their website at www.ndow.gov or contact Kim Toulouse at NDOW at 775-688-1893.
