N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 8 ACCESS NEWS Applicable Current Copy Empowering Student Success: The latest news and updates from York Technical College BCAS Dean's Council: To Study, To Support, To Serve The Business, Computers, Arts and Sciences (BCAS) Dean s Council is officially kicking off their fall semester projects this month. The BCAS Dean s Council s purpose is To Study, To Support, To Serve, and throughout the year, members fulfill this purpose in a variety of ways. This year, members will be supporting students around midterms, donating items to a service learning project, and hosting an opportunity for students to learn from those who have walked in their shoes. On October 31, we passed out Food for Thought to students all over campus. Students received a free snack with an inspirational quote and study or stress management tip to help them be inspired to persevere through the second half the semester. During the month of November, we will be collecting items to combine into Holiday Happy Bags. BCAS Dean's Council partnered with Alumni Connection to assemble "Food for Thought" to pass out to students on October 31. Each Department will be collecting donations of non-perishable items from November 1 November 30. At the end of the semester, the Happy Bags will be distributed to students! We hope you will consider donating to a department in order to help us reach our goal of 500 bags, and that you will grab your own Happy Bag the week of December 10! Items you can donate include: hand sanitizer, crackers, Kleenex, deodorant, lotion (travel size), Chap stick, toothbrush/toothpaste, or mints/lifesavers. You can make your donations in A-104. (Continued on next page)

BCAS Dean's Council: To Study, To Support, To Serve N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 8 Our Spring semester projects include our first annual Alumni Connection Career Panel and our 4th Annual STEAM Day. Members of the York Tech Alumni Connection will be on campus in early February to have a conversation with you about ways you can make the most of your time at York Tech, and to give you a glimpse into what life can be like once you earn your certificate, diploma, or degree. STEAM Day includes hands-on activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics for middle school students. A middle school in York, Lancaster, or Chester County will be chosen to participate in STEAM Day and the BCAS Dean s Council will serve as tour guides for the event. Members of Dean s Council are students in programs within the BCAS Division who have been nominated to serve by an instructor who has witnessed their positive attitude, dedication to their studies, and leadership potential. The members are mentored by the Associate Vice President, Dr. Yolanda Wilson, and members of the BCAS Leadership Team. While members have been nominated, if you are a student in the BCAS division and want to be on the council, or want to help us assemble Food for Thought or Happy Bags, we would love to have you! To become involved please email Ms. Terry Mobley tmobley@yorktech.edu. November Activities Campus Safety: 803-327-8013

Well, we hope you are successfully navigating the last half of the school year, and we hope you all are excited about the cooler, fall weather. We have some exciting things going on in the York Tech Library Club, and we invite you to be a part of what we are doing! Below are some highlights of current and future activities: * November is National Novel Writing Month the Library Club will be hosting writing activities to celebrate. We invite you to stay tuned to the news feed in D2L, and watch for the brochures around campus, to announce the days and times we will host writing events. These events will be a fun time to write and talk about writing. * December will be our Holiday Book Drive we will collect books to donate to local charities in need of books, and we invite you to be a part of our service team. You can do this with or without being a Library Club member. * MLA Workshops during the week of December 3-7, the Library Club will host pop-up tutorials on MLA Format & Style. You don t need an appointment, just bring your paper by. We will work with students on a first-come, firstserved basis. Again, stay tuned to the news feed in D2L and the flyers around campus for dates and times. All of these events are opportunities for you to connect and have fun with fellow York Tech classmates. Should you be interested in joining the Library Club, we would be glad to have you. Also, we looking for dedicated officers for our club. So, if you are interested in serving, we will be happy to get you the detail. Being part of a club or organization can help enhance your resume, but it also provides you an opportunity to network and connect with others. NOVEMBER 2018 NBA Season (2018-2019) by Josh Streeter, ACCESS staff After an interesting and shocking summer with blockbuster trades and star players signing with new teams, the biggest of them all was star forward Lebron James joining the Los Angles Lakers. After another disappointing loss in the finals to the Golden State Warriors, Lebron looks for a fresh start in L.A. The reining defending champs Golden State Warriors look for another title this season after signing Center DeMarcus Cousins who is coming off an ACL injury last season playing for the New Orleans Pelicans. One of the biggest trades this off-season was the Toronto Raptors trading their franchise star player Demar Derozan to the San Antonio Spurs The Houston Rockets added forward Carmelo Anthony to their fuel for next season to win the chip. Many other teams made changes to their teams this off-season to get ready for a new season. Every team is trying to catch the Golden State Warriors who have won three championships in the last four years. One team to watch out for to bring competition is the Boston Celtics. The Celtics are going to have forward Gordon Hayward coming back after a gruesome injury in the season opener last year. With Hayward and Kyrie Irving coming back to a Celtics squad that went to the Eastern conference without them, the sky is the limit, when healthym for this talented Celtics Team. Is the new look Lakers bringing showtime back to L.A? Will the Golden State Warriors 3 peat? Who is the New King of the East with Lebron on the West?
