Beard and sponsored by the United States Golf Association, is the newest and most comprehensive reference and "how-to" book concerned with the culture and management of golf turf. The book, a detailed, well-illustrated work that was eight years in the writing, emphasizes the application of basic trufgrass principles to golf course turfgrass culture. In preparing the book Dr. Beard, Professor of turfgrass science in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences at Texas A & M University, was assisted by the staff agronomists of the USGA Green Section, headed by then-national Director Alexander M. Radko, and by seven golf course superintendents representing the various climatic regions of the United States. The 660-page, hard-cover edition, which contains hundreds of easy-toread line drawings, graphs, illustrations and photographs, provides a handy reference tool for golf course superintendents, golf club officials, course owners,- green committee chairmen, golf course architects, novice golf course workers and student of golf course turfgrass culture.

Dr. Beard has authored four other books: Turfgrass: Science and Culture, Turfgrass Bibliography, Introduction to Turfgrass Science and Culture - Laboratory Exercises and How to Have a Beautiful Lawn. Turf Management for Golf Cours es is the third in a series of turf - related books sponsored by the USGA. It is not a revision but a completely new text. In 1917, the USGA sponsored the first book on golf course turfgrass culture, Turf for Golf Courses, by Charles V. Piper and Russell A. Oakley. In 1950 Turf Management, by H. Burton Musser, was published under USGA auspices, it was revised in 1962. NEMATODE UPDATE Several golf courses on the San Francisco and Monterey Penninsulas have isolated and diagnosed nematodes with the help of the University of California at Berkeley and Davis. At least seven courses have applied nematacides to their greens. nematacides are restricted materials, requiring permits. Nematode damage is difficult to diagnose, especially in the early stages of development. The nematode in this area has only been found on Poa Annua. The nematode, an endoparasite, attacks the crown and roots of plants. Galls are visible on the crown and roots of the plant with the naked eye. As many as 500 nematodes can live inside a single gall. The damage symptoms are similar to fungus damage symptoms. Greens infected with nematodes fail to respond to many cultural and chemical practices. Check frequently for possible nematode infestations in your area. If you think you have a nematode problem, contact your local extension agent or a nematologist from U. C. Davis. All NAUMANN 1 S NORCAL NEWS Manuel Sousa, the forman assistant at Monterey Peninsula CC is the new superintendent at Lake Wildwood Golf & CC Bob Crone, the superintendent at Lake Wildwood, will be staying with the Zeke Avila organization and will soon be relocating. Mike Phillips and Pebble Beach Golf Links are not staying idle after having a sucessful U.S. Open. Mike recently rebuilt #7 tee by doubling its size. The tee was extremely small and since it is a par 3 it was really getting eaten up. Bob Zoller, Superintendent at Monterey Peninsula CC, recently built a new tee on #17 Dunes Course. Built up about 10' with the use of sandbags and ice plant for erosion control, the tee is surrounded by natural sage and adds about 50 yds to the hole. There is a new Hydraulic oil dye (crimson red) available for all hydraulically driven units. The dye doesn't have any affect on the equipment or any oil properties. It is now available through Toro. Leigh Hulbert, Class A Life member, was superintendent at the Presidio Golf Club in San Francisco from 1936 to 1962 at his retirement passed away at the age of 88 in Watsonville where he lived for many years. Bob Shouse is in Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii working with Greenscape Ltd and finishing a beautiful course called Kiahuna Plantation.

REMEMBER the format for this meeting is different BE SURE and READ the meeting format. Remember to play golf you must attend breakfast and meeting. Notify your guest of the dress code for this meeting. ARE YOU TIRED??? We have run across some absolutely irrefutable statistics that show exactly why you are tired. And brother, it's no wonder you're tired either! There aren't as many people actually working as you may have thought, at least not according to this survery recently completed. The poplulation of this country is 200 million, 84 million over 60 years of age, which leaves 116 million to do the work. People under 20 years of age total 75 million, which leaves 41 million to do the work. Then there are 22 million who are employed by the Government, and that leaves 19 million to do the work. Four million are in the Armed Forces, which leaves 15 million to do the work. Deduct 14,800,000, or the number in the sate and city offices and that leaves 200,000 to do the work. There are 188,000 in hospitals insane asylums etc., so that leaves 12,000 to do the work. Now it may interest you to know that there are 11,998 people in jail, so that leaves just two people to carry the load. That's you and me - and brother, I'm getting tired of doing everything by myself!
