Martial Arts Academy 武術学院 Bujutsu Gakuin Wushu Xueyuan www.martialartsacademy.online, (707) 364-6478, sensei.tony.johnson@gmail.com Dear Students & Parents of Martial Arts Academy, Special Guests and Friends, I m writing today to let you know about our Skill Development Tournament on Saturday, June 25 th, 2016. This is a very special event, different than any other tournament. If you are looking for a serious tournament with tough competition, this is not it. (See the calendar at www.nckf.us instead). Our event is designed for students of all ages to learn all about competition. They setup, compete, scorekeep, chart, judge, referee, and help everywhere they can. We want them to have a wonderful, safe, exciting experience, and to be a part of it all! We feel that events like these where students take such an active role build tremendous life skills. It is also our goal to mentor the next generation of competitors, scorekeepers, judges and referees so that they can be even better than we are now. Those Sensei and Referees who would like to join us are welcome to help mentor the next generation. This tournament is also a great way to let less experienced judges/referees get more experience to help them at larger, high-pressure tournaments. USA Karate is the National Governing Body for Karate and has strict standards of excellence USA Karate is a member of the United States Olympic Committee USA Karate is part of the World Karate Federation (WKF), 188 member nations strong Martial Arts Academy BG WX is the only USA Karate school in Sonoma County We are a 501c3 non-profit charity, any donation is tax deductible Matthew refereeing Events like these where the students take such an active role build tremendous life skills. Martial Arts Academy 武術学院 Bujutsu Gakuin Wushu Xueyuan www.martialartsacademy.online, (707) 364-6478, sensei.tony.johnson@gmail.com Our Skill Development Tournament is the perfect place to come and learn the Rules of International Competition. We follow the WKF/USA Karate Rules with the following exceptions: Official Dress: Since this is a developmental tournament and the judges are our students, they will be wearing their regular uniforms rather than official dress. Insurance Requirements: in addition to mouthpiece and gloves, my insurance requires everyone to wear head gear with face protection, and now all boys and men must wear a cup. Head contact and groin strikes are still forbidden as per usual rules. All Kumite rounds will be 1:30. Rather than single eliminations, we will be doing repechage (those who lose to the 1 st & 2 nd place winners compete for 3 rd place) Throwing and tripping will only be permitted in advanced divisions. Divisions are Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced (Black and sometimes brown belts, of all ages) Everyone who participates will get a certificate of participation. We will have medals for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place! Complete Rules and Rules summaries can be found on our website here: http://www.martialartsacademy.online/tournament --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kendo (bamboo sword combat in armor) is not part of USA Karate.
