To do so, the Catamounts need to end its five-match skid with wins over Chattanooga and Samford Friday and Saturday. The road to the SoCon Tournament for the Catamounts deals with Friday s opponent, Chattanooga. Chattanooga and Western Carolina currently sit in the fourth and fifth place spots in the SoCon North Division standings. A win this weekend by Chattanooga (WCU, Appalachian State) or a loss by the Catamounts means that Chattanooga will confirm its trip to the tournament. If Chattanooga loses both matches and Western Carolina wins both of its matches, then the Catamounts will head to Davidson rather than the Mocs. The good news for the Catamounts is that both of their matches are at home where WCU is 6-4 this season as WCU has not fared as well on the road holding a 2-17 record away from the Ramsey Center. Saturday will also be special for the Catamounts as Western Carolina says goodbye to its two seniors - Abbey Scroggins and Cayla Crawley. Both matches will be streamed via CatamountSports.com with GameTracker also available for the matches with both set to begin at 6:00 p.m. 2012 Schedule Date Opponent Result Aug. 24 vs Northern Kentucky$ L, 1-3 Aug. 25 vs St. Peter s$ W, 3-0 vs North Carolina A&T$ W, 3-0 Aug. 31 vs Oregon# L, 0-3 Sept. 1 at Ohio# L, 0-3 vs Kentucky# L, 0-3 Sept. 4 at UNC Asheville L, 2-3 Sept. 7 North Carolina State% L, 0-3 Sept. 8 Central Michigan% L, 1-3 Campbell% W, 3-2 Sept. 11 vs East Tennessee State L, 0-3 Sept. 14 vs North Florida^ L, 1-3 Sept. 15 vs Mercer^ L, 1-3 vs Winthrop^ L, 0-3 Sept. 18 Gardner-Webb W, 3-0 Sept. 21 at Samford* L, 0-3 Sept. 22 at Chattanooga* W, 3-1 Sept. 28 Elon* L, 0-3 Sept. 29 UNC Greensboro* W, 3-0 Oct. 4 Appalachian State* W, 3-2 Oct. 6 Davidson* L, 0-3 Oct. 12 at Furman* L, 0-3 Oct. 13 at Wofford* L, 1-3 Oct. 19 The Citadel* W, 3-0 Oct. 21 College of Charleston* L, 1-3 Oct. 26 at UNC Greensboro* L, 1-3 Oct. 27 at Elon* L, 1-3 Nov. 1 at Appalachian State* L, 0-3 Nov. 3 at Georgia Southern* L, 2-3 Nov. 9 Chattanooga* 6:00 p.m. Nov. 10 Samford* 6:00 p.m. Nov. 17-19 SoCon Tournament TBA - Scouting Chattanooga - The first time around this season, Western Carolina defeated Chattanooga, 3-1, on the road to pick up its lone conference road win back on Sept. 22. The Mocs wrap up the season Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in Boone, N.C., against the Mountaineers. Chattanooga took three sets from ASU on Sept. 21 at Maclellan Gym to claim its first SoCon win of the season. Since visiting UTC, App State has won three of its last 13 games, but the Mountaineers are a tough 4-3 at home this season. The Mocs go into the weekend looking to improve on a 1-8 road record. Chattanooga currently ranks in the top 10 in six statistical SoCon category, including a second place ranking with 17.94 digs per set. UTC ranks seventh in both service aces and opponent hitting percentage, as well. Friday s match features two of the best liberos at scooping up digs in NCAA volleyball. Senior Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) currently holds a 6.29 digs per set average to lead the SoCon, ranking second in the NCAA. The libero has recorded double-digit digs in each of the Mocs 29 matches this season and has six matches in which she has claimed 30-or-more digs. She has two 40-plus digs matches this season. The Catamounts Morgan Cochran is 24th in the country in digs, averaging 5.41 digs per set and is currently second in the SoCon in that category. Freshman Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) is coming off a SoCon Freshman of the Week campaign in which she recorded three double-doubles in a row, including her career-best 17-kill performance against UNCG last Saturday. Reid also set a new career-high with 28 digs against Elon last Friday night while leading the Mocs offense with 14 kills. Historically, WCU leads the all-time series with a 36-33 record having won its last three matches over the Mocs. -Scouting Samford- Samford - the leader of the SoCon North - currently boasts a 12-2 SoCon record and a 20-8 overall mark. The conference record is the third best in the Southern Conference behind Georgia Southern and College of Charleston. WCU opened the conference slate in Birmingham with the Bulldogs downing the Cctamounts, 3-0. The Catamounts were held to one of the lowest offensive outputs of the season, losing 15-25, 12-25, 13-25. Jordan Timmermann led the way for the Purple and Gold with seven kills, as WCU was held to a.069 hitting percentage while Samford hit at a.326 percentage. Samford sits in the top two of every offensive SoCon statistical category. Katie Murphy and Lauren Hutchinson are second and third in the league in hitting percentage, while Michaela Reesor is fourth in kills, averaging 3.75 per set. Setter Casey Garvey is second in assists with 11.63 a/s. Garvey is also the reigning SoCon Offensive Player of the Week. WCU has lost its last 11 against Samford, with a 4-11 series record against the Bulldogs. Catamounts, Cochran Among the Nation s Best in Digs The most current NCAA statistics released Monday show Western Carolina 24th in the country out of the 328 Division I schools in digs per set, averaging 17.78 d/s. WESTERN CAROLINA VOLLEYBALL 3 Cochran Enters Top-5 All-Time Digs Chart Junior co-captain Morgan Cochran has entered the top-four in the all-time digs chart with her digs over the past week with 1,439 entering this weekend s matches. The Lakeland, Fla., native has collected 459, 417 and 563 digs in her three seasons thus far with the Catamounts. Those numbers equate to 4.72 digs per set over her three year career. Her current pace puts Cochran second all-time in digs per set in a career with 4.72. Liz Rondone (2006-09) sits atop the all-time digs and digs per set lists with 2,184 digs over her fouryear span, averaging 5.02 d/s. Western Carolina says goodbye to its two seniors this weekend - Abbey Scroggins and Cayla Crawley. Scroggins is a co-captain for the Catamounts this season. The Gaston, Ind., native has been a solid presence for WCU over the past two seasons, starting nearly every match during that time period. Scroggins is currently third on the team in kills with 170 while also boasting the second best hitting percentage at.214. She has played in 116 total matches - 334 sets - and has 499 total kills. Scroggins is a political science major who participates in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Phi Gamma Mu and the National Society of Leadership and Success. Cayla Crawley transferred to Western Carolina after playing three seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne University. In her one season in Cullowhee, the Bryson City, native has brought leadership on and off the court to the team. The defensive specialist has played in 29 sets this season, scooping up 33 digs, while averaging 1.14 digs per set. In her time at L-R, Crawley led the Bears in aces in 2011 with 36, while finishing fourth on the team in digs with 262. In 2010, Crawley was third on the team in kills with 144. She was also third in assists and fourth in blocks and digs. As a freshman, Crawley played in 77 matches, picking up 63 kills, 17 blocks and 192 digs. Cayla Crawley boasts a 3.7 GPA and will graduate in the Spring with a degree in marketing. She is a member of PRSSA, CatCom and Reformed University Fellowship. Getting off to a quick start... Western Carolina is 8-5 in matches in which it wins the first set. On the other hand, the Catamounts have struggled to get back into matches when WCU falls in the opening set. Western holds an 0-16 record when dropping the opener. Winning two... With WCU s win over UNCG and Appalachian State, it was the first time the Catamounts have picked up consecutive wins over conference opponents this season. Western Carolina has struggled in 2012 with stringing together consecutive wins, with its only other time doing so coming in games two and three against Saint Peter s and North Carolina A&T on Aug. 24 and Aug. 25. Morgan Cochran Named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week (10/8) Cochran, a junior libero, recorded 58 digs in eight sets last week for the Catamounts. She led WCU with over 20 digs in every match last weekend, including matching her career-high of 35 digs against rival Appalachian State. The Lakeland, Fla. native averaged 7.67 digs per set and moved into sixth place in WCU history in career-digs with 1,277. Cochran also leads the Southern Conference in digs in league play. It s Finally NOT Friday... Friday has not been a good day for the Catamounts in 2012. Western Carolina has picked up only one win on Fridays, with the lone victory coming last week at home against The Citadel. WCU is 1-8 on the day before Saturday. Karen Glover Head Coach Hiram College 93 Nicole McCoy Assistant Coach Mary Hardin-Baylor 07 Karen Glover 2nd Season Hiram College 93 Akron, Ohio Karen Glover is in her second season at the helm of the Western Carolina volleyball program. Glover - who was named the 2011 Southern Conference Coach of the Year - led the Catamounts to 13 wins in her first season in Cullowhee, the most overall victories since the Catamounts won 16 in 2003. WCU also amassed eight conference wins, advancing to the SoCon Tournament for the first time since 2006. Western Carolina also placed two freshmen - Caitlin Piechota and Jordan Timmermann - on the SoCon AllFreshmen Team. Prior to coming to WCU, Glover was an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and worked as head coach at Arizona Western College. Glover also coached four all-conference performers and an NJCAA All-American. In addition, Glover s program attained a 3.2 overall team grade point average. Prior to her time at AWC, she spent two years as the head coach at Phoenix College. The following season she directed Phoenix College to an Arizona Community College Athletic Association CoChampionship with a 16-2 league record and a fourth place finish at the national tournament. Overall, Glover had a 45-24 record in her two years at PC and was named 2007 ACCAC Coach of the Year. As well, her squads received NJCAA All-Academic recognition. Glover began her coaching career at Cactus Shadows HS where she was the varsity volleyball head coach for seven years (1999-2006).
