BE SUN SMART With the weather starting to warm up many riders and horses come out of their winter hibernation and start to get out and about more. Whether you are out competing, on a leisurely trail ride, training or just spending some quality time with your best friend it is always important to stay sun smart. SLIP on a shirt. Make sure it has sleeves and a collar. SLOP on some sunscreen. Make sure it is good quality & remember to re-apply regularly. SLAP on a hat. Make sure it has a wide brim to keep the sun off your face, ears and neck. There are also sun brims you can buy for your helmets, which are great for the summer. WRAP on a pair of sunnies to protect your eyes. Now that you are all set for the warmer weather and sunshine, what about your horse? Fly veils are not only great for keeping the pesky flies out of your horses eyes, but they are also great for reducing the harsh light, a bit like a pair of sunnies but for your horse. If your horse has a pink nose you will need to look at a fly veil with a nose cover, or apply a horse specific sunscreen daily. Make sure that your horse has access to shelter from the sun. This could be a stable, paddock shelter or even some nice big trees to stand under. Lastly, make sure both you and you horse drink plenty of water. Your horse should always have access to clean fresh water. If the water is in direct sunlight you may need to move it to a shadier spot.
ZONE 16 CAMP 2015 Laurene s Camp Tips: Make sure your have feed for your horse on Sunday for lunch. Camp do not provide this feed. Take a spare horse feed, or two, with you in case you miss the feed shed, or your horses needs extra. Keep this feed locked in a float so it cannot be eaten by the escape artist horses who like to have a midnight feed More Camp Tips: Take an extra blanket (or 2). It will get very cold at night. If you use a camp stretcher you will need a mattress or blanket to put between you and the stretcher, as the cold air will come through. Arrive early on Saturday to set up your yard and camp site/dorm for the week. Pack an extra water/feed bucket for your horse. GET YOUR HORSE FIT. If you have not already started your horse s fitness regime START NOW! Camp is a high energy week with up to 4 lessons a day for you and your horse. With school back in session and daylight hours reducing you may be finding it hard to ride every day. Don t forget that lunging can also be a great way to exercise your horse if you have limited time.
