Last Road Swing The Western Kentucky University volleyball team takes its final road trip in the Sun Belt Conference regular season this weekend, as the team travels to Texas State on Friday, November 1 and UT Arlington on Saturday, November 2. The Lady Toppers haven t lost a match in its final road games of a regular season since 2007 at Middle Tennessee. Versus Texas State/UT Arlington Not only is Texas State and UT Arlington new to the Sun Belt Conference, but both are fairly new to WKU s opponent history. The previous meeting in October against the Bobcats was the first in program history while WKU s sweep of UT Arlington early in SBC play evened the series history with the Mavericks at a win apiece. In the previous meeting with Texas State, Paige Wessel led the match with 10 kills and.625 hitting mark. Defensively, WKU kept pace at the net as each team had eight blocks each, led by Noelle Langenkamp s five. Ashley Potts totaled 14 digs in the back row. Against UTA, Wessel, Langenkamp and Haley Bodway tallied double-digit kills while Potts had 20 digs and Melanie Stutsman dished out 46 assists. The team also posted eight service aces, led by Rachel Engle s three. 20-Win Season With a sweep of Arkansas State in its last match, WKU sealed its 20th win of the season. It is the 13th-straight season with 20 or more overall wins. Ashley Potts Named Senior CLASS Award Finalist WKU defensive specialist Ashley Potts was named one of 10 national finalists for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, given annually to student-athletes who excel both on and off the court. With her achievements in the award s four areas of excellence--community, classroom, character and competition--potts will now face a nationwide vote to determine the winner. Fans can vote at seniorclassaward.com now until Dec. 9. Potts is the first WKU student-athlete to be named a finalist since baseball infielder Matt Payton was selected in 2010. The Louisivlle, Ky., native is up against nine other finalists, including Jennifer Cross (Michigan), Natalie Hagglund (USC), Emily Hartong (Hawaii), Caroline Jarmoc (Kansas), Chloe Mann (Florida), Ariel Scott (Penn State), Bailey Webster (Texas), Lauren Wicinski (Michigan State) and Carly Wopat (Stanford). Notes SBC s Best Offense vs. SBC s Best Defenses The weekend matches in Texas will be the SBC s best offense against the conference s best defenses. WKU leads the league in hitting percentage, kills per set and assists in overall and SBC stats. The Bobcats have the lowest opponent hitting percentage and are first in digs per set. UTA is second in opponent hitting percentage while leading the league in blocks per set, as three Mavericks rank in the top 10. 1,200th Game/300th SBC Game in Program History When WKU faces UT Arlington on Saturday, it will mark the 1,200th match in WKU volleyball history. Since its first year of play in 1981, WKU has accumulated 738 victories, good for a winning percentage of.616. The game will also mark the 300th conference game in program history. In Sun Belt Conference action, the Lady Toppers have a record of 230-68, a winning mark of.772. Stutsman to Hit 5,000 Career Assists With 4,991 career assists heading into the weekend, senior Melanie Stutsman will more than likely dish out her 5,000th career assist while in Texas. Stutsman is second in WKU s all-time career records, just 181 assists from becoming the record holder. She also ranks second in the NCAA in active career leaders, as Central Arkansas Marissa Collins leads with 5,005 in her career. Cracking the Top 10 of Career Games Played This weekend could also see a trio of Lady Toppers enter the top 10 of career games played at WKU, as Paige Wessel, Melanie Stutsman and Ashley Potts need two more games to have 135 in their time on The Hill and be tied for tenth. The most matches played by a single player at WKU is 142, which the three seniors could pass depening on WKU s run in postseason action. Ranking High in National Stats WKU consistently finds itself ranking high in national statistics in both team and individual categories. The team s.310 hitting percentage currently ranks fifth in the nation behind Missouri s.363, Florida s.334, Stanford s.323 and Penn State s.319. All four teams rank in the top seven of the AVCA poll. WKU has finished with a top-10 hitting percentage nationally the last three years along with Florida and Texas. The Longhorns are currently 14th. Individually, WKU has two in the top 20 in hitting percentage--redshirt senior Paige Wessel is tenth with.441 while sophomore Noelle Langenkamp is 19th with.412. Senior Melanie Stutsman is a big part of WKU s hitting percentage, as the Floyds Knob, Ind., native is tenth nationally with 11.63 assists per set. She has set WKU up to be 18th in kills per set (14.31) and 15th in assists per set (13.47). Of the teams that rank above WKU in hitting percentage, only Missouri and Florida have setters in the top 10 nationally in assists per set. Hudson at the Helm WKU head coach Travis Hudson is in his 19th season at the helm of WKU volleyball. The fourth coach in program history, Hudson s only head coaching job has been at his alma mater. Hudson has a coaching record of 460-185 overall and 208-59 in Sun Belt Conference play. He is the winningest active coach in the league while third in longest tenure at the current school, as Texas State s Karen Chisum has been with the Bobcats for 33 seasons and UALR s Van Compton has been with the Trojans for 25 seasons. Hudson earned career win No. 450 with a sweep of Wright State while the sweep of Troy and South Alabama gave the coach his 200th Sun Belt Conference win.
