Utah picked up its first victory of the season with a 60-59 win over Minnesota on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Taryn Wicijowski had her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kalee Whipple led the Utes with 17 points while Janita Badon had a careerhigh 14 points. Both teams played tough defense early. After the Gophers went up 9-6, the Utes (1-1) rallied back to score the next eight points and take a 14-9 lead with 7:41 remaining. The two teams stayed close for the remainder of the half. Whipple s basket from just inside the arc at the buzzer gave the Utes the lead at the break, 28-26. The basket just before the break helped give Utah a lead they would not relinquish though the second half. Although the Utes held as large as a nine-point lead with 13:39 left, 41-32, Minnesota stayed just within reach through the remainder of the game. With 3:49 left an Ashley Ellis-Milan jumper cut the score to 54-52. Utah pulled ahead by six, 58-52 with 1:32 left off a free-throw and three-pointer from Whipple. China Antione hit a three-pointer for the Gophers at the other end of the floor to keep the deficit at three, 58-55. Minnesota s Katie Ohm hit one of two free-throws to again cut the lead to two with 45 seconds on the clock. Each team turned the ball over before Whipple was fouled and hit both free throws to increase Utah s lead to four with 11 seconds left. Although Jackie Voigt hit a long three-pointer with three seconds remaining to come within a point, 60-59, Whipple was fouled with one second left and missed her free-throws to be able to grab the rebound and clinch Utah s first win of the season. Utah struggled against UCLA in the JHG Jam, falling to the Bruins 69-33 on Saturday, Nov. 21. The Utes (1-2) shot just 24-percent as a team. Utah was led in scoring by Halie Sawyer with seven points and six rebounds. Diana Rolniak had a team-high seven rebounds. We just struggled early and it was a bad tone to set, head coach Elaine Elliott said. We struggled with pressure. Everyone took their turn. Our offensive execution was not there in any shape or form. UCLA (3-1) took a 16-0 lead in the first half before the Utes got on the board with 14:37 remaining on a free-throw from Rolniak. That was the start of an 11-0 run for Utah to cut the lead to five, 16-11 with 10:12 left. However, that was as close as the Utes would get the rest of the way, as UCLA pulled ahead with an 8-0 run to put the score at 24-11 with 6:09. The Bruins led 33-17 at halftime, led by eight points from Darxia Morris. Kalee Whipple had six points at the half for the Utes. Utah continued to struggle in the second half. The Utes shot just 52.2-percent (12-for-23) from the freethrow line in the game, despite UCLA having an 18 to 12 advantage in fouls. Rachel Messer tied her career best with six points.
