St Joseph Private School recently organised a recycling project on the 8th and 9th of February 2017. The recycling project was held on three consecutive days. Recyclable objects such as newspapers, tin cans, cardboard and waste paper were collected from the students in ample amounts. Recycling Project Cor Amoris Members of the Cor Amoris Charity Club had the upmost privilege of assisting in the collection of recyclable materials. The aim of this project is to raise funds for the non-profitable charity organization, Home of Love. The objective of the association is to support the establishment for the care of Malaysian citizens suffering from multiple illness and their families irrespective of race, religion and creed. On the 8th of February, volunteers from Cor Amoris Charity Club reached the school at the crack of dawn to begin the beneficial project. Volunteers were given specific tasks such as tying newspapers and marking down names of students who contributed. Others would then arrange the newspapers into neat stacks, for further disbursement when the people who would collect the newspapers and tin cans come later on. 2017 02 February 5/21
Through perseverance and joint effort, all tasks were completed by 9:30 a.m without delay or fault. All the newspapers and tin cans that were collected throughout the three days were gathered and arranged neatly to prevent any obstruction when walking. On the third day, the truck from the recycling centre came to collect all recyclable items amassed throughout the three days, at about 10 a.m. The members from the charity club, Cor Amoris then aided the workers in loading the items into the truck. Recycling Project Cor Amoris The project was a complete success as the school was able to gather an outstanding amount of RM1590.66 for the Home of Love. We, members of Cor Amoris deeply thank the school and the Home of Love for bestowing such a great opportunity for us to help in this selfless cause. We hope that all the donation given to the Home of Love would be put to the best of use, and we thank all volunteers for their participation in this event. m 2017 02 February 6/21
SJPS Concert Band spends an afternoon with St. Teresa s School Band The SJPS Concert Band members spent the afternoon of February 11 th 2017 with St. Teresa s School band and it was an interactive and enriching experience. Our concert band only started this year and the nine fledgling members had the opportunity to see a full band in action. They took part in ice-breaking activities, were introduced to many different types of instruments and were guided through sectional practice. It was a very pleasant afternoon for band practice and the members understood the need for rigorous practice and discipline. The leaders from St Teresa s school band were very helpful and patient. At the end of the session, listening to St Teresa s School Band play was an awesome experience. m 2017 02 February 7/21

sh A W ednesday Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Ash Wednesday itself is a day of fasting and abstinence. On this day, ashes will be put on the forehead of the faithful in the shape of a cross after the homily during Mass. While the marking is done by the priest or other lay ministers, appropriate words are used to remind the faithful to turn away from their sins, repent, and therefore believe in the Good News of the Kingdom of God. Examples of words used during the imposition of ashes are: Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return; Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel; Repent and believe the Good News. The ashes used on Ash Wednesday come from burning the previous year s palms used during Palm Sunday. Ashes are a sign of our mortality and penitence. It signifies the human condition of the sinner, who seeks to express one s guilt before the Lord in an exterior manner, and by so doing express one s interior conversion, led on by the confident hope that the Lord will be merciful. The liturgical use of ashes originates in the Old Testament times. For example: Job repented in sackcloth and ashes (Job 42:6); Daniel prayed, "I turned to the Lord God, pleading in earnest prayer, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes" (Daniel 9:3); Mordecai put on sackcloth and ashes when he heard of the decree of King Ahasuerus of Persia to kill all Jews in his empire (Esther 4:1); through Jonah's preaching, the Ninevites proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, and the king covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes (Jonah 3:5-6). m 2017 02 February 21/21
