The programs offered, the skills developed, and the instruction provided to our skaters all meet a specified standard that is consistent across Canada. Riverview Skating Club coaches are all certified through Skate Canada through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and they in turn train our volunteers to assist with on-ice instruction. Riverview Skating Club is the only Skate Canada registered club in West Hants and has been operating since 1972. The club is non-profit and is run by volunteer Executive committee, coordinators and Coach s. Every program is instructed by professional coaches. The volunteers are comprised of parents of present and past starskaters that have a keen interest in their children having a great skating club.
CANSkate Riverview Skating Club 2017 2018 Program Information P a g e 2 CanSkate is Canada s learn-to-skate program for beginners of all ages. It focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. CanSkate introduced a fresh new look on and off the ice in September 2013 that: Focuses on teaching and mastering strong basic skills earlier to prepare skaters for all ice sports hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating On-ice delivery focusing on continuous movement emphasizes the use of newer and more dynamic group teaching concepts including the Fast Track, Fun Zone and station rotation all of which has been proven to increase practice opportunities and improve the rate of skill acquisition among skaters. More visual aids and music are used to create a fun, stimulating and welcoming environment. New report cards and an exciting new series of award ribbons to achieve, in addition to the Stage 1 to 6 badges PreCanSkate: is designed for 3 and 4 year olds. Children are taught to skate with an active play format through games and creative exercises in our 30 minute sessions. Skaters are working on as set of skills toward their PreCanSkate Level 1 badge of CanSkate. The program focuses on the fundamentals of skating: go forward, go backward, jumping, turning, and falling down/getting up. They also learn the beginning stages of how to stop by learning to make snow on the ice. On completion of PreCanSkate skaters will be encouraged to move into our mainstream CanSkate program. However, if skaters aren t ready for a longer more intense program they can remain in PreCanSkate until they are ready.
CANSkate Riverview Skating Club 2017 2018 Program Information P a g e 3 Junior Development is an optional program that is generally recommended for skaters by a coach who are enrolled in the CanSkate Stages 4-6 who are interested in completing CanSkate and possibly moving into StarSkate (Skate Canada s figure skating program.) In addition to regular CanSkate, skaters enrolled in Junior Development will receive a 15 minute class with a certified Coach. Skaters in Junior Development are also eligible to skate with a beginner Synchronized Skating team. Volunteering: Throughout the year Parents of Skaters are asked to contribute their time to events such as our fundraising events and annual ice-show. Kristin Hubley is the CanSkate Coordinator this year and she can assist with many of your questions about the program, but feel free to ask any of the Coaches or Executive any questions you have about the programs. We are in need of badge station attendants! Please check with Kristin if you can help out. Each skater is required to participate in the Mandatory fundraiser for the session they are enrolled in. We also have club Fundraisers that we encourage all club members to be involved in. All skaters enrolled in the spring session will be invited to participate in our Annual Ice Show! The Show Theme this April 2017 will be Mary Poppins. Coaching: Depending on the enrollment in a session we have 1 or 2 Skate Canada certified coaches running each session. This year the PreCanSkate Program will be run by Coach Jennifer Harvie and the CanSkate program will be run by Coach Talia Pay with support from Coaches Jessica Lake- Crossley and Clara Moran. Program Assistants: Many of the skaters registered in Figure Skating and experienced Adult Skaters volunteer to be Program Assistants (PA s) during CanSkate and PreCanSkate. All PA s have received training and are approved by the Coach leading the program. Many sports organizations including Skate Canada promote kids teaching kids!
