It will be Providence s final game before the first semester finals break. TALKING POINTS Providence has won 11 of its first 15 games for the first time since 1997-98 (11-3-1). The Friars enter Friday night in first place in the Hockey East standings (6-2-0; 12 Pts.). Sophomore goalie Jon Gillies ranks in national top-10 in goals against average (1.81, 7th), save percentage (.945, tied for third), wins (10, tied for third) and shutouts (3, tied for 1st). This week, Gillies was named the Hockey East Co-Goaltender of the Month and to 26-player preliminary roster for the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team. Junior forward Ross Mauermann s 12 goals are tied for second in the nation and his 21 points are tied for seventh. With 11 points (7-4-11) in eight Hockey East games, Mauermann is the League s leading scorer. The Friar offense ranks seventh in the country (3.60 goals per game) and the Friar defense ranks tied for fifth in the nation (2.00 goals against per game). Sophomore forward Nick Saracino has a six-game point streak (3-3-6). Sophomore defenseman John Gilmour has a four-game assist streak (0-4-4). The Friars are unbeaten in their last five games against Northeastern (3-0-2), including a season sweep of the Huskies in 2012-13 (3-0-0). It took the Friars 13 games to reach the 10-win plateau, marking the fastest Providence has reached 10 wins since the 1989-90 season when they also started 10-2-1. SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN The Huskies captured the 2013 Shillelagh Tournament championship last weekend in South Bend, Ind., tying Western Michigan (1-1) and downing host Notre Dame 3-2 in the title game. Senior goaltender Clay Witt, who was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week (Dec. 2), made 61 saves during the tournament, allowed just three goals in two games and had a.953 save percentage to earn All-Tournament Team honors. The 19th-ranked Huskies enter the weekend with a 9-5-1 overall record and a 3-4-0 mark in Hockey East play. Northeastern is unbeaten in their last four games (3-0-1) entering Friday night. Sophomore Kevin Roy (11-9-20) and freshman Mike Szmatula (5-12-17) lead the Northeastern offense. Senior Braden Pimm s five power-play goals lead the team and are tied for third in the country. Northeastern s offense is averaging 3.40 goals per game (14th in the country) and

PC unbeaten in last five games (3-0-2) THE SERIES Last season, Providence swept their Hockey East series versus Huskies (3-0-0) for the first time since 2000-01. In the Friars first game against Northeastern last season, Derek Army recorded his first career hat trick to lead the team to a 6-2 victory (Nov. 18). In the second game, the Friars again recorded a 6-2 win over the Huskies (Feb. 22) as Tim Schaller 13 and Stefan Demopoulos each played a role in five Friar goals. Schaller finished with one goal and four assists, while Demopoulos added two goals and three assists. To complete the season sweep, Steven Shamanski scored his first career game-winning goal - an unassisted shorthanded tally - to give the Friars a 3-2 win at Matthews Arena (Feb. 23). It was Providence s first win at Matthews since Jan. 25, 2008. the Huskies defense is yielding 2.47 goals against per game (19th) Witt is 7-3-1 this season with a 2.08 goals against average (16th nationally) and a.939 save percentage (6th). The NU freshman class has 59 points (17G, 42A), tied for most in the nation with BC. GILLIES NAMED HOCKEY EAST GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH Jon Gillies was named the Hockey East Co-Goaltender of the Month for November, it was announced by the conference on Dec. 3. Gillies went 7-1-1 in November, including a pair of shutouts at Merrimack (1-0 on Nov. 8) and at Vermont (3-0 on Nov. 16) to become PC s all-time leader in career shutouts with eight. He also turned in a 45-save performance at No. 5 Quinnipiac to help the Friars to a 3-3 tie (Nov. 27). For the month, Gillies posted a 1.85 goals against average, made 294 saves and posted a.942 save percentage. It marks Gillies fourth career Hockey East Monthly award, having earned Rookie of the Month honors twice as a freshman and then being named the Goaltender of the Month for October, 2013. ROSS MAUERMANN LEADING THE FRIAR OFFENSE A two-time Hockey East Player of the Week, junior Ross Mauermann leads the Friars in points with a team-high 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points. His nine assists are tied for the team lead. Mauermann has six multi-point games this season. Mauermann s 12 goals are tied for second in the nation and his 21 points are tied for seventh. Mauermann has at least one point in 12 of Providence s 15 games. FROZEN FENWAY Providence College will play at Fenway Park on Jan. 4 against Merrimack in a non-conference game. The contest will mark the first outdoor game for the Friars. It took Mauermann 11 games to score 10 goals, the fastest a Friar has reached 10 goals since the 2002-03 season when Peter Fregoe scored 10 goals in Providence s first eight games. Mauermann has led the Friars in scoring in each of his first two seasons. Mauermann has notched at least 24 points in each of his first two seasons, the first Friar to do so since the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 seasons (Peter Fregoe 03 and Jon DiSalvatore 03). Mauermann is the 16th Friar to lead the team in scoring in back-to-back years. Ron Wilson 77 was the last Friar to lead the team in scoring in three consecutive seasons (Wilson lead the Friars in scoring in all four of his seasons from 1973-74 to 1976-77). GILLIES TO PRELIM USA ROSTER Jon Gillies was named to the 26-player preliminary roster for the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team, it was announced by USA Hockey (Dec. 4). Team USA will participate in the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2013-Jan. 5, 2014, in Malmo, Sweden. The 26 players named to the preliminary roster will participate in a training camp Dec. 15-18 at the University of Minnesota s Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, with preparations then continuing in Angelholm, Sweden. Then the final 23-man roster will be announced on Dec. 23. Gillies served as the primary backup for Team USA at the 2013 World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia and became the first Friar to take home a medal in the prestigious tournament as the U.S. won gold. Gillies is one of three returning players, joining forwards Riley Barber and Ryan Hartman. A NEW SCHNEIDER ARENA Last season, Gillies became the 11th Friar to take part in the World Junior Championships and the first since Bobby Goepfert (2003). Shaun Kane 92 is the only Friar to have taken part in two Junior World Championships (1989 & 1990). the mayor s CUP On Saturday, November 30, 2013 Providence defeated cross-town rival Brown University, 3-2, to claim the 28th Annual Mayor s Cup. Senior Derek Army s goal at 9:17 of the third period proved to be the game-winner. Sophomore Nick Saracino scored the first goal of the game 17 minutes into the first period It was the second year in a row the Friars claimed the Mayor s Cup. Providence now holds a 16-9-3 all-time mark in the Mayor s Cup. REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK On Nov. 16 at Vermont, sophomore goaltender Jon Gillies made 23 saves to post his school record-eighth shutout as a Friar, surpassing Tyler Sims 08 (7). Gillies recorded his eighth shutout in his 45th career start. Sims (2004-08) posted his seventh shutout in his 94th career game. Four of Gillies eight career shutouts have come on the road. With three shutouts this season, Gillies is tied for the national lead with Ryan McKay (Miami), Sam Brittain (Denver) and Steven Summerhays (Notre Dame). Last season as a freshman, Gillies set the Providence College single season record with five shutouts. Gillies 1.99 GAA ranks first in the Providence record book (min. 35 games played). SHAMANSKI A SENIOR CLASS FINALIST Senior defenseman Steven Shamanski has been named one of 20 finalists for the 2014 men s On Friday, Sept. 27 Providence College unveiled a renovated Schneider Arena at a Grand Reopening Ceremony. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence community, classroom, character and competition. From the list of 20 candidates, a national media committee will select ten finalists in February. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award. POLLING DATA The Friars stayed at No. 4 in both the USCHO. com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls this week (Dec. 3). The Friars received a first-place vote in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll on Nov. 11 and Nov. 18. Prior to this season, the last time the Friars reached the top-five in the national rankings was when they were ranked No. 5 in the USA Today/American Hockey magazine preseason poll on Oct. 1, 2001. With the Oct. 25 win over Miami, Providence defeated a top-10 team while also ranked inside the top-10 for the first time since posting a 5-3 win over Boston College on Feb. 9, 2001. Prior to this season, the Friars last reached the top-10 in the national polls in the first week of February, 2006, when they were ranked ninth in both national polls. UNDERCLASSMEN NUMBERS Last season, the Friar roster featured the thirdmost freshmen in the country. This season, Providence carries the third-most underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores) in the nation with 20 (note complied by College Hockey Inc.): 22 -- Penn State 21 -- Army 20 -- Providence 19 -- Northeastern & Quinnipiac STRONG STARTS The Friars reached the 10-win plateau in 13 games, the fastest since the 1989-90 season when they also started the year 10-2-1. Providence opened this season with four straight wins for the first time since 2003-04. The Friars then went unbeaten through their first five games of the season (4-0-1) for the first time since the 2002-03 (opened with a 7-0-0 mark). Providence finished the month of October (4-0-1) with an undefeated record for the first time since 2002-03 (5-0-0). The Friars started a season with just one loss in their first 10 games for the first time since going 8-1-1 over their first 10 games in 2002-03. For the first time, dating back to the inaugural season in 1984-85, Providence opened Hockey East play by winning five of its first six league games. The Friars started a season with just one loss in their first 11 games (9-1-1) for the first time since going 9-1-1 to start the 1990-91 season. TEN SPOT The Friars posted a 10-4 win against AIC at Schneider Arena on Oct. 19. Providence scored 10 goals for the first time since Oct. 12, 2002 (an 11-0 home win over Iona). The last time the Friars were involved in a game with at least 14 goals was Nov. 9, 1996 when they lost an 8-6 decision at home to Boston University. RUFO SIDELINED Freshman forward Niko Rufo will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a lower body injury in Providence s 1-0 win at Merrimack on Nov. 8. Rufo played in the first eight games of the season for the Friars, scoring two goals and adding an assist for three points. LUISE ADDED Sophomore goaltender Nicholas Luise has been added to the Friar roster as the team s third goaltender. Luise played three years of varsity hockey for Austin Prep (Reading, Mass.) before attending Providence College and playing for the PC club hockey team. NEWCOMERS The 2013-14 Friar roster features eight newcomers, including six freshmen, red-shirt sophomore forward Trevor Mingoia and sophomore goaltender Nick Luise. Mingoia played with the Tri-City Storm (USHL) last season after playing the 2011-12 season for Union College. Two rounds later, sophomore John Gilmour was selected 198th overall by the Calgary Flames. Florentino and Gilmour were the 96th and 97th Friars selected in the NHL Draft. Former PC standout and current assistant coach of the Colorado Avalanche, Tim Army, ranks sixth all-time in points (179) at Providence. He earned All-America honors as he helped the Friars capture the 1985 Hockey East Tournament title and guided the team to the NCAA Championship game. Steve Rooney scored the game-winning goal as the Friars defeated Boston College, 2-1, in double overtime in the inaugural Hockey East championship game in 1985. Steve went on to play in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens team that claimed the 1986 Stanley Cup title. (Steve is the father of 2013 PC graduate Chris Rooney). FOLLOWING IN FATHER S FOOTSTEPS Two sets of Providence College father-son combinations have played in at least 100 games, including senior Derek Army and his father, Tim Army 85. FRIAR FIRST ROUND NHL DRAFT HISTORY Sophomore Mark Jankowski was picked in the first round (21st overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft by the Calgary Flames, which took place on June 22-23 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Jankowski became the third Friar ever to be picked in the first round and the first since 1992 when Joe Hulbig was picked 13th overall. The other Friar to be selected in the first round was Tom Fitzgerald, who was picked 17th overall in 1986. FRIARS IN REGULAR-SEASON OPENERS Providence is now 39-23-1 all-time in season openers, including five consecutive seasonopening victories. Those five wins have come at Schneider Arena. Under Head Coach Nate Leaman, the Friars are 3-0-0 in season openers. The Oct. 11 game marked the sixth season in a row that the Friars have opened a season at home (5-1-0 in that span). PC hosted a Hockey East Quarterfinal series for the first time since 2002-03 and went on to win a home ice quarterfinal series for the first time since 2000-01 - defeating New Hampshire, two games to one. PC made the Hockey East Championship Semifinals for the second consecutive season, marking the first time the Friars made back-to-back HEA semifinal appearances in 17 seasons (1994-95 and 1995-96). Freshman goaltender Jon Gillies was named a Second Team All-American, the HCA National Rookie of the Year, a First Team Hockey East All-Star and the Hockey East Rookie of the Year. Gillies became PC s first All-American since 2003-04. The Friars entered the last weekend of the season with a chance to win the regular-season title for the first time in program history. Providence s 17 wins was its highest win total since 2005-06 (17-16-3). Providence s 13 Hockey East wins tied for the third-most in program history. It was the program s first winning Hockey East record since 2005-06. Providence went 8-8-4 away from Schneider Arena, its highest road win total since 2003-04. Providence scored 105 goals (most since 2005-06) and registered 173 assists (most since 2005-06). Senior forward Tim Schaller became the second player in program history to be named the Hockey East Defensive Forward of the Year. With five shutouts, Gillies set the all-time, single season mark for shutouts in a season by a Friar goaltender. The Friars reached as high as 16th in the USCHO.com poll, their highest ranking since November of 2003. Providence was ranked 18th in the seasonending USCHO.com poll, marking the first time since 2001 the Friars were ranked in the final USCO.com poll. Providence captured the Mayor s Cup in outright fashion for the first time since 2009 with a 7-0 victory at Brown on Nov. 24. Gillies won the gold medal with Team USA at the World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia, becoming the first ever Friar to medal in the event. He was the 11th Friar to take part in the prestigious event. With a 6-5 win on Jan. 19, the Friars won at New Hampshire s Whittemore Center for the first time since March 12, 2004. The Friars finished the regular-season 2-0-1 record against the Wildcats, marking their first undefeated regular season vs. the Wildcats since 1991-92.

FRIARS.COM HEAD COACH 7 Nate Leaman THIRD SEASON Nate Leaman is in his third season as head coach of the Providence College men's hockey program. In two seasons at helm, Leaman has transformed the program, including back-to-back Hockey East Championship semifinal appearances by the Friars. Last season, Leaman led the Friars to a 17-14-7 overall record and a 13-8-6 mark in Hockey East play. It marked the most wins for a Friar squad since the 2005-06 season. The 13 Hockey East wins tied for the third-most in program history. The Friars entered the last weekend of the regular season in contention for the league title for the first time ever and went on to win a home quarterfinal Hockey East playoff series for the first time since 2001. The Friars then made a second consecutive Hockey East semifinal appearance, marking the first time in 17 seasons that Providence has made at least the Hockey East semifinal in consecutive seasons (1994-95 & 1995-96). In 2012-13, Leaman coached Providence College's first All-American since 2004 in freshman goaltender Jon Gillies, who was named a Second Team All-American. Gillies was also named the Hockey Commissioner's Association (HCA) National Rookie of the Year, a First Team Hockey East All-Star and the Hockey East Rookie of the Year. He was just the third freshman all-time to earn First Team Hockey East honors. The Friars were able to move into the polls on the strength of several marquee wins, including their first win at New Hampshire since 2004 and their first win at Boston College in their last 18 tries. Leaman and his team are very involved in the community and last season the Friars added Kevin Rich to their squad as part of Team IMPACT, a non-profit chartered to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses. Leaman received the Reverend John McMahon Award from the Providence College Student Congress in April of 2013. Recognizing members of the PC community for outstanding dedication and service to the student body, it is the highest honor that Student Congress awards. In his first season at Providence (2011-12), Leaman led the Friars to the Hockey East Semifinals for the first time since 2001. Providence defeated No. 2 seed UMass Lowell in a best-of-three quarterfinal series to become the first No. 7 seed to ever win a Hockey East Quarterfinal series in the history of the league. Leaman, who was appointed the 12th coach at Providence on April 22, 2011, guided Providence to 14 victories during the 2011-12 season. Among those wins was a two-game weekend sweep of then No. 1 nationally ranked Merrimack on December 3-4. The 2-1 overtime triumph on December 2 was PC's first over a No. 1 team since 2003. After their successful weekend against Merrimack, the Friars were ranked in the USCHO. com national poll for the first time since 2008. In all, Providence recorded seven wins against nationally ranked teams, including five victories against squads in the top-10. In addition, Leaman coached Ross Mauermann, who was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. Mauermann became the first Friar to earn the honor since 2007. Prior to Providence, Leaman spent eight seasons as the head coach at Union College. Leaman's 2010-11 Union squad posted an impressive 26-10-4 overall record, including a 17-3-2 mark in the ECAC. The 26 overall wins and the 17 league triumphs are school records. The team captured the College's first Cleary Cup (ECAC regular season champion) and earned its first NCAA Division I Tournament berth. In eight seasons at Union, Leaman's teams posted a 138-127-35 mark. His 138 wins are the most of any of the 14 head coaches in school history. He also posted the highest winning percentage (.518) of a Union head coach. Leaman guided Union to four consecutive winning seasons. In 2009-10, the team posted a 21-12-6 record, finished third place in the ECAC regular season and was the ECAC Tournament runner up. During his tenure at Union, Leaman coached 91 All-ECAC Academic selections, 12 All-ECAC players, six All-ECAC Rookie selections, three ECAC Student-Athletes of the Year and two CoSIDA/ ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Honorees. In his career behind the bench, Leaman has coached 16 NHL draft picks, five All-Americans and one Hobey Baker finalist. Leaman is a 1997 graduate of SUNY Cortland, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences with a concentration in environmental science and received the Aldo Leopold Award for excellence in environmental science. Captain of the hockey team as a junior and senior, Leaman finished his career as one of the top-20 scorers in Red Dragons' history. A native of Centerville, Ohio, Leaman and his wife, Alice, have two young sons, Ty and Bryce.
