Stockport Harriers & AC 2018-19 Sportshall Athletics Sportshall is an indoor form of Athletics primarily for the U11 to U1 age groups. It was created to provide a safe and warm environment for Young Athletes to train during the cold and dark winter months. Following it s introduction in the 1970 s, Sportshall quickly became a new form of team-based athletics competition in the Winter, allowing Young Athletes to keep practicing and competing in modified versions of running and field events all year round. The sportshall programme focuses on fitness and multi-skill development, providing a grounding for all sports. It is totally inclusive and provides a stepping stone into more traditional competition formats for Young Athletes. Track events are linear and use turning boards called reversaboards to assist in change of direction. Races therefore look much like swimming races and are measured in laps. In competition, races can be anywhere from 1 to 6 laps as well as there being relays including 4x1 or 4x2 lap relays or longer races such as the 8 lap pairs parlauuf. Field events are similar to track and field but modified for the sports hall. They include chest push for the younger age groups and traditional shot put for the older ones, soft javelin, standing long and triple jumps and standing vertical jump amongst others. We compete in the Greater Manchester Sportshall Athletics League and County Championships. Athletes can also earn selection for their County for the North West Regional Finals and UK Sportshall Athletics Finals. Stockport Harriers run Sportshall Athletics training sessions for age 7-1 at Hazel Grove High School from 9-am every Saturday Morning. Contact David Jackson (coachdavidsk@gmail.com) for details of training and competition opportunities. Stockport Harriers Sportshall Athletics Dates 23/9: Gr.
