THE SAN JOSE STATE GAME: San Jose State took advantage of a significant rebounding advantage and made enough shots, especially in the first half, to earn an 86-70 victory over Seattle University Saturday night at KeyArena at Seattle Center. Alex Jones led Seattle U with 21 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the field and 9-of-11 shooting from the free throw line, but fouled out halfway through the second half. Cervante Burrell contributed 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Mark McLaughlin also scored 12 points and Sterling Carter added 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists. A layup by Burrell gave Seattle U a 12-8 lead with 14:5 remaining in the first half, but San Jose State went on a 16-5 run over the next five minutes, with Justin Graham leading the way with seven points over that span. After back-toback layups by Jones cut the Redhawk deficit to three at 24-21, the Spartans went on a 12-4 run, punctuated by consecutive three-pointers from Graham and Keith Shamburger, to pull ahead by 11, 6-25, with 4:18 remaining before halftime. Shamburger scored the final five points of a Spartan 8-0 run that gave the visitors a 55-9 advantage five minutes into the second half. Taylor Stevens hit a three-pointer to bring Seattle U within 12 at 59-47 midway through the second half, but San Jose State put the game away with 11 unanswered points over the next two minutes. As a team, Seattle University shot 7.7 percent (2-of- 61) from the field, including 5-of-24 from behind the three-point line, and 79.2 percent (19-of-24) from the free throw line. Meanwhile, San Jose State shot 40. percent (27-of-67) from the field, including 7-of-17 from behind the three-point arc, and 7.5 percent (25-of-4) from the free throw line. The Spartans outrebounded the Redhawks, 49-, with the visitors earning 19 offensive rebounds during the contest.

SCOUTING VIRGINIA: The Cavaliers come into Wednesday s game with an 8- overall record after a hardfought 50-49 victory over Norfolk State Monday night. Virginia has won six of its last seven games and is in the middle of an eight-game homestand. The Cavaliers are scoring 65.1 points per game and giving up 6.0 points per contest. As a team, Virginia is shooting 4.8 percent from the field, including 40.7 percent from behind the three-point line, and 72.0 percent from the free throw line. The Cavaliers will be without leading player Mike Scott (16. ppg, 10.4 rpg), who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle last Thursday. Mustapha Farrakhan is averaging 11.8 points per game and is shooting 81.1 percent from the free throw line. Joe Harris is contributing 10.4 points per game, while Jontel Evans, the only Virginia player to start every game so far this season, leads the way with.7 assists per contest. SEATTLE U VS. VIRGINIA AND THE ACC: This will be the first meeting all-time between Seattle University and the University of Virginia. Seattle U is 1-2 against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Seattle U defeated Boston College in the 1952-5 season (99-86) and lost to Wake Forest in the 1977-78 campaign (85-67). Earlier this season, the Redhawks lost to the University of Maryland, 105-76, despite 20 points from Alex Jones, a double-double from Aaron Broussard with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and seven steals by Garrett Lever. THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: Cameron Dollar is in his second year as the head coach of the Seattle University men s basketball team. After leading the team to a 17-14 record in 2009-10, he was named Independent Coach of the Year. He did not need to leave the city of Seattle to accept this position, as he had been an assistant coach at the University of Washington under Lorenzo Romar for seven seasons. In 2008-09, the Huskies won their first outright Pac-10 regular season title since 195. Dollar also was instrumental in helping Washington reach the Sweet 16 in both 2005 and 2006. Dollar joined Romar at Saint Louis in 1999, helping the Bilikens win the Conference USA tournament championship in 2000. After spending one season as an assistant for Pat Douglass at UC Irvine, Dollar became the nation s youngest head coach in 1998, taking over the program at Southern California College (now Vanguard University), where he went 11-22 in one season. As a player, Dollar helped UCLA win the 1995 NCAA Championship at the Kingdome in Seattle. RELISHING THE SPOTLIGHT: This season the Seattle University men s basketball team will play five games that will be televised on a regional basis, beginning with the Nov. 8 game at Maryland on Comcast SportsNet Washington and Comcast Sportsnet Northwest. Four home games will be carried by FSN Northwest. A FAMILY AFFAIR: When looking for coaches to join his staff, Cameron Dollar did not have to look far to fill one of the assistant positions, just up the family tree. His father Donald Dollar joined the Seattle University men s basketball program last year after a long and distinguished career of coaching high school basketball in Georgia. He earned three state championships, 16 regional titles, 11 appearances in the state semifinals, and eight chances at the state title. Over 5 players who played for Donald Dollar have gone on to play at the Division I or Division II level, with four players having played or presently playing professional basketball. After moving into the college ranks and seeing success at his alma mater Morehouse College, Dollar served as an assistant coach at the University of West Georgia for two seasons. ESPN BRACKETBUSTERS: The Seattle University men s basketball team will participate in one of the ESPN BracketBuster games during the weekend of February 18-20, 2011. Seattle U is a designated visiting team. The matchups, including the 11 games chosen to be televised on the ESPN family of networks, will be announced on Jan. 1, 2011. Below is the list of 49 potential opponents for the Redhawks: Stony Brook, Boston University, Idaho State, High Point, Liberty, Presbyterian, UNC Ashville, Winthrop, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, Drexel, James Madison, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, Towson, William and Mary, Loyola Chicago, Valparaiso, Wright State, Youngstown State, Fairfield, Marist, Niagara, Rider, Siena, Akron, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Western Michigan, Morgan State, Drake, Indiana State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, Wichita State, Murray State, Southeast Missouri, Tennessee-Martin, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, College of Charleston, Western Carolina, Wofford, Oral Roberts, Nevada, New Mexico State, Saint Mary s SCHEDULE COMPRESSION: Wednesday s game is the last of 15 contests played by Seattle University in the first 45 days of the 2010-11 season. Ironically, this stretch will begin and end in ACC country. After the Virginia game, Seattle U will have 10 days away from competition before the Jan. 2 contest at Pepperdine.

THE ENGINE OF THE OFFENSE: Once again, Cervante Burrell is one of the keys to the success of the Seattle University men s basketball team. He is third on the team in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game, and again leads the way in assists, averaging.2 assists per contest. He broke through with a career-high 22 points along with five rebounds and five assists in Seattle U s 8-80 victory over Oregon State. He was a major factor down the stretch in helping the Redhawks hold on to their lead against Navy, finishing with 19 points and going 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute. He earned MVP honors in the 2010 Elgin Baylor Classic against Idaho, scoring 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. Burrell has been battling a right knee injury since bruising the knee near the end of the Dec. 1 game at Portland State. After playing through the problem at Weber State and against Idaho, he sat out the Dec. 15 game at Eastern Washington. He returned in Saturday s game against San Jose State, coming off the bench and contributing 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. THE RELUCTANT WARRIOR: Aaron Broussard has emerged as one of the team s go-to players. He started the season with two double-doubles in the first three games, earning 10 points and 10 rebounds in the Maryland and Cal Poly contests. He helped Seattle U earn its first victory of the season with nine points, 12 rebounds, and four assists against Oregon State. He posted career-high scoring totals of 25 points against UC Irvine and 26 points against Navy, pulling down nine rebounds in each contest. Those performances helped put him on the All-Tournament Team at the UC Irvine subregional of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. On Nov. 29, he hit the go-ahead three-pointer on his way to a 20-point, 12-rebound performance as SU defeated Montana State, 72-70. Broussard currently leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE: Alex Jones is one of the seniors from Phoenix giving the team some veteran leadership. He started the season by leading the Redhawks with 20 points at Maryland on Nov. 8. He contributed 10 points in the home opener against Cal Poly and 11 points in the Redhawks 8-80 victory over Oregon State. Jones took advantage of a favorable matchup against UC Irvine, finishing with 19 points, four rebounds, and two assists. This past Saturday against San Jose State, he scored a season-high 21 points in part on 6-of-6 field goal shooting Overall, he is averaging 10.9 points per game so far this season. 2010-11 SUPERLATIVES INDIVIDUAL HIGHS Points...26, Aaron Broussard, 11/21/10...26, Sterling Carter, 11/12/10... 1, Mark McLaughlin, 11/21/10 Assists...1, Sterling Carter, 12/15/10 Steals...7, Garrett Lever, 11/08/10 Free Throws...10, Aaron Broussard, 11/21/10 -Pointers...5, Sterling Carter, 11/17/10...5, Sterling Carter, 11/12/10 Blocks..., Sterling Carter, 11/14/10 TEAM HIGHS Points... 91 at Eastern Washington 12/15/10 FG Made.. 4 at Eastern Washington 12/15/10 FG %...48.4% at Portland State 12/01/10 -Pointers... 10 at San Francisco 11/12/10 PT %... 41.7% vs. Navy 11/21/10 FT Made...25 vs. Oregon State 11/17/10 FT %...79.% vs. Cal Poly 11/14/10 Rbs... 46 vs. Montana State 11/29/10... 46 vs. Navy 11/21/10 Assists... 21 at Eastern Washington 12/15/10 Steals... 18 at Maryland 11/08/10 Blocks...6 vs. Cal Poly 11/14/10 TEAM LOWS Points... 58 at UC Davis 11/27/10 FG Made...16 vs. Cal Poly 11/14/10 FG %...27.1% vs. Cal Poly 11/14/10 -Pointers... vs. Idaho 12/11/10... at Maryland 11/08/10 PT %... 18.8% at Maryland 11/08/10 FT Made... 8 at Weber State 12/04/10...8 at Portland State 12/01/10 FT %... 47.1% at Weber State 12/04/10... vs. San Jose State 12/18/10... at Portland State 12/01/10... vs. Louisiana Tech 11/19/10 Assists... vs. Idaho 12/11/10 Steals... 2 at UC Davis 11/27/10 Blocks... 0 vs. Idaho 12/11/10... 0 at UC Davis 11/27/10... 0 vs. Navy 11/21/10... 0 at UC Irvine 11/20/10

STUFFING THE STAT SHEET: Senior guard Garrett Lever has been doing the little things to contribute to the team s effort so far this season. The son of former NBA player Fat Lever, he has earned. points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 2. steals per game. Despite his height, Lever finds himself in the right places on the court, as he is currently second on the team in rebounding and leads the way in steals for the second straight season. He scored a season-high 11 points, plus he grabbed eight rebounds, at San Francisco on Nov. 12 and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds at UC Irvine on Nov. 20. In the Nov. 17 victory over Oregon State, Lever added seven points and six rebounds to the winning effort. RECLASSIFICATION STATUS: The Seattle University athletics department is currently in Year Three of the reclassification process towards Division I membership. The process began with the NCAA Exploratory Year in 2007-08. The Redhawks are in the midst of four years in which they will count as a Division I school for scheduling purposes but, with the exception of men s soccer and women s soccer, the sports chosen for fasttrack status, will not be eligible for NCAA titles. ON THE RADIO: Every Seattle University men s basketball regular season game will be broadcast on 710 ESPN Seattle. For the second straight season, Dave Grosby and Gary Hill, Jr., will bring all the action to radio listeners on the same station that broadcasts the games of the Seattle Mariners and the Seattle Seahawks. The pregame show commences shortly before tipoff and includes an interview with head coach Cameron Dollar previewing that day s contest. FRESH FACES: Seattle University has depended on some new faces over the first half of the 2010-11 season. Sterling Carter got off to an impressive start, scoring at least 20 points in four straight games, starting with a 26-point performance against San Francisco on Nov. 12. Carter is currently second on the team in scoring with 1.1 points per game and is shooting 6.6 percent (4-of-9) from behind the three-point line. Fellow freshman Mark McLaughlin has been one of the first players off the bench this season for the Redhawks, reaching double figures in scoring seven times so far this year. He notched his first career double-double with 1 points and 1 rebounds against Navy on Nov. 21. Brandon Durham has emerged as a low-post threat, hitting the first 11 field goal attempts he made at the NCAA Division I level. Averaging 15.4 minutes per game, Durham is averaging. points and.4 rebounds per game. Chad Rasmussen has been in the starting lineups in the past two games and is averaging 6.8 points per game in the last four contests, including a season high of 1 points Dec. 4 at Weber State. Fred Wilson played a solid game at Eastern Washington, finishing with four points and four rebounds. Taylor Stevens broke through against Eastern Washington with 11 points. STATISTICALLY SPEAKING: Seattle University is scoring 72.4 points per game and giving up 80.9 points per contest. As a team, the Redhawks are shooting 40.7 percent from the field, including 28.4 percent from behind the three-point line, and 67.0 percent from the free throw line.
