OSHAWA LAWN BOWLING CLUB NEWSLETTER JULY 2018 THE OSHAWA BOWLER Respect the Past, Build for the Future THE GORDON MACMILLAN MEMORIAL TROPHY TOURNAMENT Gordon Samuel MacMillan Few lawn bowlers can match the achievements of Gordon Samuel MacMillan. Born in Oshawa, Gord won one Canadian Singles Lawn Bowling Championship (1966), two Ontario singles titles (1963, 1966), and was runner-up three times at the Ontario championships. He was also a gold medalist at the 1975 Ontario Summer Games. Gord joined the Oshawa Lawn Bowling Club in 1951 at the age of 18. A winner of numerous titles on the club circuit, Gord represented Canada at an international competition in Pretoria, South Africa in 1973 and was chosen to compete in the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta. Tragically, Gord passed away two months before the competition was to begin. Also a fine curler, Gord was honoured by the City of Oshawa in 1966 for his lawn bowling achievements. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: Well another month has gone by in our season of Lawn Bowling, but not without the start of a heat wave setting in. The extreme heat and high humidex levels that will be around for a few more days have led to the cancellation of Canada Day and other activities at the Club for Health, Wellness and Safety reasons. Hopefully we will get back to more comfortable temperatures soon and be able to enjoy our sport once again. The New Bowler Refresher Sessions in June went very well. Many thanks to Doreen & Bob Souch, Marg & Doug Edwards, Cathie & Pat Sayer and Erni Vallee for all your help and assistance with the new bowlers of our club. The first week of July is here and just around the corner we have the Youth Provincials. A lot of planning and preparation has gone into this event which is to be hosted by our club on July 7/8 2018. Ken Bunner has done a great job organizing this along with his committee and many volunteer members of the club. If you have some free time on these dates please come and support our Youth Bowlers. Well guys keep your eyes on the Club Calendar for the rest of July for Tournaments, and events coming up, and hopefully no more cancellations.
