Classic Memories Classic Memories: A Hong Kong Perspective Local youth bowlers registered their biggest ever success after young girls Vivian Yip and Amy Choi, both product of the Hong Kong youth development programme, kept the women s Classic pairs title at home for the first time since its inauguration in 8. Combined with the two singles prizes won in the earlier part of the tournament by Hong Kong representative Dorothy Yu and Craigengower Cricket Club bowler Jordi Lo, Hong Kong bowlers made history with scooping three golds in the four Classic titles chase in. Yip and Choi, from the Hong Kong China U squad, won nine of the matches in the round robin and finished top of their section. They then beat the Malaysian team of former World number one Siti Zalina and Commonwealth Games silver medalist Azlina Arshad in the semifinals. In the final, they faced a strong Australian team which comprised the reigning World singles champion Karen Murphy and World junior girls singles champion Kristina Krstic, who defeated the Scotland team in their penultimate match. The final started under a grey sky but the Hong Kong duo began brightly, opening with a lead of 7: after just two ends. Australia then won the next five ends to hit the front by 7:8, however, they conceded six shots in the last two ends to lose the first set. In the second set, the threatening weather quickly turned from bad to worse. Heavy downpour came midway through when the Australians were leading :8. As the Kowloon Bowling Green Club was flooded, the game, the many spectators and the broadcasting crew had to be moved to the indoor green at Club de Recreio. After the resumption of the match, the Australians went on to win the remaining ends of the set to force it to a tie-breaker.

Classic Memories The Australian team took one shot from the first end in the tie-breaker. In the second end, Yip drew a superb shot with her last bowl to level the score. In the very last end, the Aussies were holding two shots when both teams had only their last bowl to play. Yip delivered a firing shot to take the jack into the ditch and holding a shot that was about one metre away. Murphy drew her last bowl and stopped about the same distance in front of the ditch. After calling on the umpires to do the measure, Yip s bowl won by two inches and history was made. B a c k t r a c k i n g t o t h e s i n g l e s competition which was held in the previous Sunday as a lead-up to the pairs event, Jordi Lo became only the third Hong Kong bowler to take the singles title in its years of history, and is the first since when Noel Kennedy won it. Lo started off in the first round a g a i n s t t h e d e f e n d i n g p a i r s champion, Christopher Dagpin from the Philippines. In the following rounds he overcame Ronald Wong from Macau, Corey Wedlock from Australia and Mark Wilson from Ireland. He then defeated the defending champion, Robert Grant from Scotland, in the semi-finals to proceed to the final against Andrew Duncan from Ireland to clinch his most significant title yet of his career.

Classic Memories The Inaugural Classic Carnival with a total of teams staged at Kowloon Cricket Club between November and November. The teams are divided into two groups of 7 teams each to play a single round robin of -end fours. After the round robin stage, the top team of each group will go straight into the semi-final whereas the second and third teams of each group will have a play-off match for the remaining semi-final spots. Duncan started the final well and won the first set : easily. In the second set Lo regroup himself to pull back a set at :. During the threeend tie-breaker Lo took one shot from the first end and lost the second end by two shots. In the last end Lo pushed away Duncan s shot and was holding two when Duncan had only the last bowl to play. Duncan missed with a heavy draw and Lo was champion. In the women s singles, Hong Kong international and reigning Joint Bowler of the Year Dorothy Yu began her singles journey against Hong Kong China team and Hong Kong Football Club teammate Camilla Leung, who was runner-up in this event in. Yu started well and took the game 8:, 7:. She then dispatched defending Pairs champion Ainie Knight from the Philippines in the second round, Catherine McMillen from Ireland in the third round and Australia s Krstic in the fourth round. Yu then beat Hong Kong China teammate Rita Tsui, who shared the Bowler of the Year laurel with Yu, in the semi to reach the final against Millicent Lai from Sea Birds Sports Club, who had earlier gained the upper hand of Tammy Tham of Kowloon Cricket Club at the semifinals. The two players each took a set to push the match into a tie-breaker. Yu won a single shot in the first end and followed with a full house in the second set to lift the title. It is especially brilliant for local women bowlers as they occupied all four semi-finals berths in the women s singles as well as winning the singles title for the first time. In the men s pairs, young Australian Corey Wedlock and Nathan Pedersen had no problem adapting to the indoor green at Club de Recreio to beat Commonwealth Games Triples Bronze skipper Marc Wyatt and Commonwealth Games and World Indoor gold medalist Robert Weale from Wales :, : in straight sets. National Championships National Championships Panel Report - is a year of excitement, challenge and improvement for bowls in the national competitions area. A brand new team event in The Bowls Grand Prix was added to the calendar in Easter to usher in the premier league season; while the Aitkenhead Fours received a total revamp to live up to its Sport For All banner. Designed as a test of bowler stamina and consistency, the augural Bowls Grand Prix kicked off the league season with a bang. Top premier league sides and the Hong Kong China Squad were invited to compete in the four traditional disciplines for one grand prize over the four consecutive Easter holidays. Its format mimicked the popular -a-side events but gave total flexibility in the player roster. Well done to the HKFC Angels and KBGC Men to become the inaugural winners. Fast forward to the Easter, the nd Bowls Grand Prix was not dampened despite losing its first day of play to rain. With swift improvisation and full co-operation from clubs and players packing the original -day schedule into three and cutting men s singles from the fixtures, the second edition of the Grand Prix was successfully concluded in the twilight of Easter Monday, with the KCC Dragons and LBA United came out on top. In the week preceding the Grand Prix renewal, another major tournament renovation has taken place. The Aitkenhead Fours took on a new look with the -- sets play, nodelivery-of-the-jack and one-bowl tiebreak fast-paced format. With the restriction of one entry per gender per club lifted, the re-vamped Festival of Sport -day event attracted a record number of participants close to. And for the first time in a national event organized by this panel, all players were given a high quality commemorative cap as a part of their participation experience. Backtracking to October, the U Singles knock-out stage was moved away from the controversial Tai Po Waterfront green to Tseung Kwan O in order to provide the U Squad main qualification event with a level playing field. Improvements were also made in the day-to-day business. Most notably, match scores of all national events are now posted on the Association website to make the fixtures and results section complete and informative. Building on the idea of awarding prizes down to joint thirds in national events, the Panel made another initiative to present each winning and runner-up player with a medallion in addition to a cash prize. Comparing to the optional trophies of different designs every year, the medallion with a consistent outlook would project a sense of continuity and identity and hence make it a most sought-after memento. It was not all business as usual for in terms of planning and implementing the bowls calendar, drafting the various conditions of play and handling player enquiries and complaints. One major challenge came from the Knock-out Singles where the men s event was rained off in the first place and had to be re-scheduled; and the women s section nearly did with two greens closed in the morning of the event date. The swift re-arrangements of both events could not have been possible without the help of Clubs and umpires concerned. The Panel s indebtedness to all involved. Finally, our sincere thanks to the following persons for their generous support in the Panel s work in the past year. Mr Calvin Chan of the Nong s Company Limited for the Nong s National Singles sponsorship. Mr Patrick Fong for sponsoring the permanent trophy of the rechristened Mixed Fours. Convenors and management of CCC, CdeR, FC, HKCC, HKFC, HKPLBC, IRC, KBGC, KCC and USRC for use of their green for national events. C o u n c i l m e m b e r s, Pa n e l members, umpires, event helpers and our staff Leona, Howard, Irene and Andrea for their useful advice and hard work. This panel report would be my last one in this capacity as I am planning to step down from this office in September after three years of service. It has been a gratifying journey in the endeavor to provide Hong Kong bowlers with a fair and open framework to perform. Walter Kwok Vice-President National Championships Chairman of the National Championships Panel
