Mike Bernard Acadiana Chapter American Hibiscus Society www. Join us Tuesday, March 6th at 6:00 pm at the Ira Nelson Horticultural Center Let the thawing out begin! It looks like we are in the clear as far as freezing temperatures go, unless March has a nasty surprise in store. We deserve some warm weather, as do our precious hibiscus! Associate member Todd Alvis will join us at our March meeting and give us a presentation about harvesting and properly planting seeds, germinating tricks and techniques, and caring for young seedlings. Todd is a wealth of knowledge and will travel quite a distance to be with us. You don t want to miss his talk! Don t forget to bring a shirt of your choice to the March meeting if you are interested in having our MBAC logo embroidered at no cost to you. Remember: nothing should be on the left side where the logo will be placed. How impressive would it be to the public if we were all to wear MBAC shirts for Festival Des Fleurs and for our May show! We are officially on All Seasons seminar calendar for Saturday, April 21 at 10am. This will be a great opportunity to share our knowledge of hibiscus and, more importantly, recruit new members. Think about coming, either to talk about your experience with growing tropical hibiscus or simply sit amongst the public and be a friendly, welcoming face! I ll see you on March 6 th! MBAC President, Ryan Perry 2019 Hibiscus Calendar Contest Our Bloom Photo Contest kicked off in February with its first two winners, Sandra Theall with Tiger Cub and Lorraine Kizziar with Sparkling Water. a a New Orleans Spring Grafting Party Charlotte Lege Kirk Crane Tobey Smith Jessie Arabie Sunday, March 4th, beginning at 1 pm at the home of Gayle and Buddy Breaux. Please let Sandra Barr (504-452-8011; sandrabarr1066@gmail.com) know if you are planning to attend so that we will have sufficient food and rootstock available. The chapter will supply the rootstock at $2.00 apiece, but if you have your own, bring it and save the fee. Those of you who have a particularly rare and/or nice cultivar should consider bringing a few cuttings to the party for use as scion (see above). After all, sharing prized cultivars is the main reason for our get-together. Even should you choose not to graft, there will be people on hand who will be glad to do a few grafts for you. So come and enjoy the fun, food, and lovely garden! Buddy s Blooms and Things The temperature has really warmed up and with that warmth comes new growth and the need to start preparing your plants for the upcoming spring season. Translated that means: get out the fertilizer and in many cases start repotting some of your collection or new purchases. If you made the trip over to Dupont Nursery and made a few purchases or you made some purchase online then you re probably faced with a decision: Do I leave my plants in those 1 gallon pots or do I move them up in pot size? I always move mine up. Several of you have asked me what I do so I decided that while I was repotting my recent nursery purchases I would take a few pictures for you to demonstrate each step in my repotting technique. Remember this is my own method. What you actually do is strictly your own call. I will simply tell you that my method has been very successful. I hope yours is too.. Father Gerlich and I were discussing my method and I forwarded to him the pictures I had taken as I completed each step. He was kind enough to take each picture and develop a power point presentation for anyone interested. If you want a copy of the power point simply let me know by email at buddy@acadianahibiscus.com and I ll shoot it out to you. Our newsletter editor Ann Peltier has put together on paper those power point pictures and explanation for your review. Should you have any additional questions simply let me know. I hope these pictures and explanation are simple enough. Remember new growth means it s time to feed your babies so get out your fertilizer and Epsom Salts and treat your plants to a good meal. They will love you for it. Should you have more questions let me know good blooming everyone.buddy Potting Hibiscus Photos & Process by Buddy Short
