MORE TO DISCOVER ESCAPE TO JASPER S PRISTINE ROCKY MOUNTAIN PLAYGROUND SKI JASPER MARMOT BASIN CANADIAN ROCKIES

THE MOUNTAIN * * WELCOME TO MARMOT BASIN............ Located in the breathtaking, wilderness landscape of Jasper National Park; Marmot Basin is a truly unique skiing destination that is a feast for the eyes and rejuvenation for the soul. We are all altitude and no attitude up here. An unpretentious & authentic mountain town, friendly locals, uncrowded slopes and intimate atmosphere are just some of the many reasons skiers return to Marmot Basin & Jasper year after year. Marmot Basin has one of the longest seasons in Canada stretching from mid-november to early May. That s almost 6 full months of incredible skiing and snowboarding each year! We are also one of the least crowded ski areas of our kind in North America, where powder stashes last and the wide-open slopes are yours to enjoy.

SCENERY * * * BREATHTAKING SCENERY............ Virtually every location on the mountain is an inspirational viewpoint. Jasper National Park, Canada s largest Rocky Mountain park, is an integral part of the UNESCO Canadian Rockies World Heritage Site. At Marmot Basin, you are surrounded by protected wilderness in every direction. Amazing memories will be etched in your mind as you experience the only ski destination in this unparalleled paradise.

THE SNOW * * * * FANTASTIC SNOW............ Marmot Basin is the northernmost Rocky Mountain ski area at a latitude of 53 degrees north, with the highest base elevation of any major ski area in Canada. Nature delivers over 450 centimeters of dry, light Rocky Mountain powder snow annually. This beautiful natural snow combined with a state-of-the-art snowmaking system guarantees great conditions all season from November to May.

TERRAIN * * * * * DIVERSE TERRAIN... Skiers and snowboarders can explore a wide variety of runs, from novice to expert, on five mountain faces. You will uncover long, perfectly groomed trails, high alpine bowls, treed runs, and steep chutes filled with Rocky Mountain powder snow. With 696 hectares (1,720 acres) of skiable terrain and seven modern lifts, the only time to rest is in the lodge, not waiting in lines. Families and experts alike have room to carve turns at their pace and the mountain is designed to guide everyone to the mountain chalets.

LESSONS * * * * * * WORLD-CLASS INSTRUCTION............ The Marmot Basin Snow School recruits some of the best coaches and instructors from all over the world. We are not only diverse in culture but also in talent. We ll take you skiing or snowboarding, through the terrain park or the trees, turn you into a racer or a freerider. Perhaps your thing is a perfectly groomed blue run, maybe it s the bumps. Give us the time and you can do it all. If this is your first time on skis or a snowboard, you re in-luck as Marmot Basin has the best learning slopes in the Canadian Rockies. Our pros will help you graduate from the Magic Carpet beginner s area and escort you up to the School House Chair. From this point it s a steady progression to stardom, because the sky is the limit. You will not find a better combination of instruction and progressive trails to maximize your learning experience. Every Olympic athlete standing on the podium has a coach. If you are already advanced or expert, let us put you on your own personal podium. One of our certified instructors can guide you to the summit of Marmot Peak (a podium with a view) and deliver you safely back to the bottom. If you re not interested in the climb, perhaps Tres Hombres is a challenge we can help you overcome with style. Regardless of your age or ability the Marmot Basin Snow School has daily programs available. Gain confidence in a group lesson, improve your proficiency in a private session and take your riding or racing to the top with our world-class coaches and instructors. You re going to have a great time, I guarantee it. Colin Borrow Snow Sports Director

JASPER * * * * * * * AUTHENTIC MOUNTAIN TOWN............ Everyone leaves the mountain at the end of a ski day to mix with locals who are quick with a smile and a tale or two, as they share their slice of heaven with visitors. Enjoy Canadian and international cuisine and a lively night scene while staying in quaint inns or luxurious lodges. Many skiers and snowboarders who visit Jasper once, end up as locals! Venture beyond the crowds this winter to an authentic Canadian mountain town. WILDLIFE & ACTIVITIES......... Winter visitors regularly get to see elk (wapiti), bighorn sheep, deer, coyotes, and more rarely, wolves, lynx, moose or even woodland caribou. Jasper is unique among ski areas for wildlife viewing opportunities. The community offers many other great Canadian pursuits such as cross country skiing, ice skating on frozen lakes, ice canyon walks, snowshoeing treks, dog-sledding and regional helicopter skiing or cat-skiing.

NEW TERRAIN * * * * * * * * TRES, TRES, TRES MASSIVE BY JEREMY DERKSEN

Marmot Basin s new Tres Hombres expert area delivers complex, steep fall line riding Snow sloughs over the hump of the large cliff I m standing above, trickling down over the rocks below. I wait poised on the shoulder of a spiny chute dropping into the new Tres Hombres area, via the second gate off Marmot Basin s Paradise area. The entrance is guarded by large Rockies granite slab on either side - steep, narrow and no mistakes allowed. Straight-line through these jagged stone sentries and you re spit out onto a single-lane powder freeway falling right to the boundary below. No point thinking about it too long. I give myself a three count and drop in. Rock rips past my peripherals as snow blows up around me, heart pumping adrenaline as the slight, tingling edge of fear gives way to elation. I ve been staring at that forever, especially that windlip, said Chris Peel, after we dropped in. The former Jasper freestyle coach and co-owner of local shred shop Freewheel Cycle, there s not much if anything Peel hasn t skied on the mountain. Terrain expansions are not that frequent in North America. They don t happen every year, or even every few years. Much of the skiable inventory on the continent has remained unchanged for the last decade With five new runs opening onto chutes, bowls and cliff drops spread buffet-style across a 45-acre, northern face off the backside of the ski area, Tres Hombres offers over 1,200 vertical feet of steep skiing - the longest uninterrupted fall line riding on the mountain. It s far from being the only advanced area on the mountain, however - 40 percent of the hill s terrain is rated advanced to expert. Marmot has its share of steeps and rockier terrain and it s really accessible, often just a short hike or traverse off the chairlift, Peel adds, listing classic favourites like Charlie s Bowl, Eagle East, the Knob and Cornice. All four are familiar to me, as the scenes of some of my favourite skiing moments over the last 15 years, but the lure of the unexplored and the untamed draws me back to Tres again and again. Nearing the bottom of another epic descent, I find myself poking around blind drops and corners, scouting the next line, and the next - and knowing that this new favourite will keep me occupied for a while to come.

1964-2019 * * * * * * * * * * 1920 s Joe Weiss named Marmot Basin and acted as guide to cross-country skiers from Whistlers Creek via Caribou Ridge. 1950 s Bill Ruddy and Tom McCready lobbied for a road to be built from the highway to Marmot Basin. 1964 Marmot Basin Ski-Lifts Ltd. was issued a Licence of Operation by Parks Canada. 1964/1965 The Upper Chalet was built. The Yellow T-Bar was installed. 1965/1966 The Red T-Bar was installed. 1968/1969 10 sheltered runs were developed. The Lower Chalet was built. The Yellow Chair was installed. The Red T-Bar was relocated to the lower slopes. 1970 A modem access highway to Marmot Basin was completed. The Caribou Chair was installed from the 4th parking lot. 1976 The Knob Char was installed in the Upper Basin the serviced vertical rise became 701m/2300ft. 1986 The Spillway T-Bar was installed. The Little Rascals Nursery was built. 1990 The Eagle Express Quad Detachable Chair was installed. Ski runs were widened and developed. 1991 The Paradise Chalet was completed. 1997 Renovations to Lower Chalet and a 17,500 square foot new addition. Named Caribou Chalet. 2001 The Eagle Ridge Quad Chair was installed opening up large area of terrain including more expert areas. 2003 The Magic Carpet was installed in the learning area. 2006 A new snowmaking system was installed in lower area ensuring good snow conditions from mid-november to early May. 2009/2010 The Canadian Rockies Express High Speed Quad chairlift began operation. 2009/2010 A completely new and much expanded terrain park was located on Liftline 2011/2012 The Paradise Express High Speed Quad Chairlift and School House Triple Chair began operation. 2013/2014 Completion of the 1st Long Range Plan. 2017 Tres Hombres opened December 1st, 2017. 2019 Marmot Basin celebrates its 55th anniversary.
