GIANT PUMPKIN Schedule 2019 Competitions
Overview The Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) Giant Pumpkin Competition is an iconic Ekka event, with the 2019 competition set to pack on the pounds for both the pumpkins and the prize pool. It will be a grand for the grand champion, with Champion Heaviest Pumpkin of Show prize to tip the scales at $1,000. The prize money for the School and Youth Classes are also set to increase, with a new bonus in place for the school class $400 if their pumpkin packs on more than 50kg. Entries are open to all green thumbs including farmers, school kids and amateur gardeners across the three classes: Open, Schools and Youth. Horticulture dates back to the first show held in 1876 and pumpkins have always played an important role in competitions and displays during the show. The largest ever pumpkin entered in Ekka s Giant Pumpkin Competition weighed in at a whopping 261.5kg - more than a quarter of a tonne! The gigantic gourd was grown by Minden s resident green thumb Geoff Frohloff in 2015, squashing the previous record by a massive 57.5kg. For the past five years, the Ekka s iconic Giant Pumpkin Competition has been held outside of August to allow growers to take advantage of the premium growing season, leading to larger than life giant orange vegetables. The gigantic winners will be on display in the Agricultural Hall during the show from 9-18 August 2019. Frohloff Family They grow them big in Minden pumpkins that is! The Frohloff family, led by Grandfather Geoff Frohloff, his son Tony and grandsons Jordan, Dylan and Riley have all been gifted with green thumbs, with several Giant Pumpkin titles under their belts. Geoff is the current Pump-King record holder, with his whopping 261.5kg pumpkin in 2015 still the largest recorded in the iconic competition. In 2018 both Geoff and Tony were pipped at the post by newcomer Steven Fritz, with his 206kg pumpkin outgrowing the veggie patch kings. The Frohloff family did however have a win, with Tony s sons Jordan, Dylan and Riley taking out first, second and third in the Youth Class.
