Sign up now!

Costumes We would like not only to apologize for the issues regarding costume, but also thank you for being patient with us as we exchanged costumes. Never in the 5+ years of ordering costumes through this particular costume company has the sizing been too small. We can say we will not be using this company again for costumes; while the costumes are great, it isn t worth the headache! Now that you have your costumes, here is what you need to do with them before picture day: Steam/fluff any costumes with tulle. Easiest way to do this is hang the costume upside down in the bathroom while someone is taking a shower. For any costumes with loose glitter: a few coats of aerosol hairspray will help the glitter stay on the costume. Allow your costume to air out; wrinkled costumes are sad costumes, and nobody likes that! Keep the appropriate tights and accessories with each costume Picture Day Picture day is scheduled for Sunday, April 27 th. Studio One will be used for the actual pictures while Studio Two will be used as the dressing room. Parents are not allowed in Studio One this is a distraction to the girls. Hair and make- up is up to you! Be as simple or elaborate as you would like! Please arrive and be ready (this means hair perfect, make- up perfect, and in costume) 15 minutes before your scheduled photo time.

Picture Day Hair & Make- Up Every year, Sara Faux (a friend of the instructors) assists at picture day by doing simple and fun hair and make- up. We have found that parents like this because it is one less thing for them to worry about and the girls like it because they get their hair done by a pro. You are not required to use Sara s services. Sara is charging $5 per hair style or make- up. She is offering the following hair styles: ballet bun, high curly ponytail, or down and curly (short hair only). Appointments will be scheduled 20 minutes apart. If you want Sara to do both hair and make- up, you will need to schedule two appointments. Appointments will begin at 9:00am and continue throughout Picture Day. To schedule an appointment, please ask the front desk for the appointment sheet. If you need references on her work, Miss Sam has used Sara as a make- up artist for several weddings, including her own, as well as for hair for formal occasions. Sara currently works at Sephora where she receives training in all of the latest make- up.) Summer Dance Intensive Course June 16- July 9, 4 weeks MTW 5:00pm- 8:00pm Ages: 6+ Want to advance to the next level in dance? Then join our weekly dance intensive for nine hours of studio- quality dance practice! Open to dancers 6 and up. Focus will be on exposing students to various styles of dance and perfecting turn, leap, jump and over all dance technique. Styles to vary by night. Dancers should bring a water bottle, light snack, and all dance shoes each night. 5:00-5:30: Warm- Up Stretch 5:30-6:15: Jumps, Leap, Turns 6:15-6:30: Snack Break 6:30-7:30: Dance Class (Jazz, ballet, Tap, Poms, Hip Hop, etc) 7:30-8:00: Stretch and Cool down Fee: $120/$130 Code: 116083.01 Save the dates for the 2014 Fall Dance Schedule! Session I (7 weeks): September 8- October 25 Session II (7 weeks): October 27- December 20, no class November 21-29 due to Thanksgiving Holiday Showcase: Friday, December 12 th Do you have a clothes rack? We are in need of rolling clothes racks for the backstage area during recital. If you have one that you are willing to let us borrow for recital, please let us know! They will be used to designate class dressing areas and for girls to hang up their costumes. Recital Ticket Information Every person occupying a seat in the theatre and pizza party will need to purchase a ticket parents included. Tickets are $10 each. This year, seats will be assigned. In years past, there has been a large problem of families saving as many as 20 seats as soon as the dancer arrives to the theatre. This is extremely unfair to some families and is the reason why we have gone with assigned seating. Recital tickets will go on sale Sunday, April 27 th (picture day!) at 9:00am. You may only purchase tickets for yourself and your guests. Parents It is very important that you meet your child at the end of class. This is when instructors are passing out handouts and reminding everyone of upcoming deadlines! While we do our best to communicate all information via newsletters, handouts, verbally, and on our Facebook, we are still finding some information is not being received. If you have questions, please get in touch with us! There is only so much each instructor can do to make sure everyone is aware of upcoming events and vital information. Let us know how we re doing! Contact Information Miss Sam (head of dance program): SamanthaRWink@gmail.com Dale (Dance Supervisor): Dale_Hanstad@glendaleheights.org Sports Hub: 630-260-6060 Make sure to Like Glendale Heights Dance on Facebook to stay up to date on the latest news and events!!

Dress Rehearsal: A Long Night of Dancing, Bonding, and Stressed Out Instructors Dress Rehearsal is mandatory for all dancers and parents (even the dads!). This is the time where each dance marks formations on stage, and gets to practice their dance one last time before recital. This is also the time for parents to practice how they will be doing their child s hair and make-up, and take some action shots of their dancer. Failure to attend dress rehearsal will forfeit your child s participation in the recital. Dress Rehearsal is divided in to two groups so no one has to be there the entire time. There is a slight overlap between the two groups, so please pay attention to what time you need to arrive ready at Glenbard North. Each group is required to be at their its session regarding attendance, a facility tour, and other information. This is when instructors go over last-minute reminders and show both parents and dancers where they are expected to be during recital. Group One needs to attend the 5:00 meeting. Group Two needs to attend the 7:00 meeting. Rehearsals will start after that meeting. Once your child has rehearsed all of her dances, you are free to go. *Note to Tues. Ballet/Jazz and Tues. Hip Hop: Your rehearsals are before your informational session. Please arrive to Glenbard North and be 100% ready to rehearse by 6:20pm. A dress rehearsal is just that: a rehearsal in full hair and make-up. This is the time to see if make-up needs to be darker, hair pieces need to be secured better, costumes need to be fixed, etc. It is expected that each dancer arrives in full hair and make-up. Dancers can quickly put on their first costume once they get to Glenbard North. Both the Big Theater and Faculty Bathroom directly across from the theatre can be used for changing. Please do not fix make-up or hair in the bathroom; 1. It is too small and 2. The instructors would like to know where everyone is, so it helps if everyone stays in the theatre as much as possible. In order for Dress Rehearsal to remain on time, dancers need to be 100% ready ten minutes prior to their scheduled time (or as the group before them is rehearsing). We would much rather run ahead of schedule than behind, and your promptness helps us with this. Dress Rehearsal is a long night for everyone. We will do our best to make sure it runs as smoothly as possible. If you have any questions about Dress Rehearsal, please let us know! What you should bring with to Dress Rehearsal: All costumes, hair pieces, and accessories All tights All shoes Hair Spray, bobby pins, and make up for quick touch ups. Light snacks (granola bars are good!) and water please dispose of trash J Something to occupy the dancers time as she waits. Running around or screaming in the theatre or school is not allowed or acceptable. Remember: every single one of us represents the Dance Program and Glendale Heights Parks, Rec, and Facilities. We do not want to give either a bad name. Let us know how we re doing! Recital: So How Does This All Work The recital is scheduled for Saturday, June 7 th. We are super excited for our end of the year performance and pizza party! Here is a timeline of the night: 5:30 Dancers and backstage moms arrive at Glenbard North Door 1. Dancers must arrive in full hair and make-up; there is not enough time to do it at Glenbard North. The only thing a dancer should have to put on is her costume and shoes. Dancers will need to check in at the door to the dressing area. Once checked in, a dancer is not allowed to leave the backstage area. Additionally, no outside family members or guests are allowed backstage; if there is an issue, we will find you! 5:45 Doors to the theatre open for seating. At this time, dancers are expected to be 100% ready to go in hair, make-up, and costume, and stretching. 6:00 Performance begins. 7:45 Pizza Party! 9:00 Go home J Backstage Area Each class will have a designated area where it will meet and change. Areas include the classroom leading to the stage and the school hallway. The hallway will be blocked at all times to ensure privacy to those changing. The only people allowed in the backstage area are dancers, backstage moms, instructors, and female Sports Hub helpers. No family members, friends, guests, etc. are allowed at any time backstage during the duration of the show. No men are allowed backstage at any time. Show Order We have kept combo class dances in the same half of the show. Dancers performing in the first half of the show will sit in the back of the theatre with their designated backstage mom during the second half of the show. Dancers performing in the second half of the show will sit in the back of the theatre with their designated backstage mom during the first half of the show. Dancers are not allowed to sit with their families during the show. All dancers will need to have a cover up (robe or oversize adult button up shirt) over their costumes when in the theatre; this is to not only protect the costumes, but also not give up the surprise to the audience. Girls are to stay in their last costume to come out on stage and bow. If you. Dance first half only Dance second half only Dance Opening number and second half only Dance first half and Daddy Daughter Dance Only Dance both halves Then You will remain in your last costume and sit in the back of the theatre with a cover up the second half You will sit in the back of the theatre the first half in your first costume and cover up You will stay in your opening number outfit and be escorted to the back of the theatre to watch the remainder of the first half. Beg. 2 Ballet Daddy Daughter Dance - Thurs. 6:30 Everyone comes out and bows Recital Hair and Make Up Hair: Hair must be pulled back away from the face as to not become a distraction to the dancer. The style of it may be as simple or elaborate as you wish, but it needs to be pulled back away from the face and able to accommodate all costume hair pieces. Make sure the hairstyle is secured with hairspray and bobby pins. Make sure any hair pieces are secured. Make-Up: Make-up is required on all dancers; it is essentially an extension of the costume. The stage lights wash-out the facial features of anyone not wearing make-up. The point of wearing make-up on stage is to emphasize each girl s facial structure. Tips for make-up: Foundation: Choose a foundation 1-2 shades darker than normal skin tone and blend evenly on face and under chin. The shade will match perfectly once under the stage lights. Finish with a translucent powder. Blush: Brush pink blush on the cheek bones. Eye shadow: Matte browns work the best (blues and purples end up looking like black eyes!). Use a darker brown in the crease and extending from the outer corner to the crease; it should form a triangle. Use a lighter brown on the light itself. You can also use Contact Information: Miss Sam (head of dance program): SamanthaRWink@gmail.com Dale (Dance Supervisor): Dale_Hanstad@glendaleheights.org Sports Hub: 630-260-6060

Recital: So How Does This All Work a white eye shadow or shimmer underneath the eyebrow to highlight and differentiate between the eyebrows and eyelids. Eyeliner: Using eyeliner helps to define the shape of the eye under the stage lights. Line both top and bottom eyelids. Mascara: Black is the best! Eyebrows: Fill and darken eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil that matches the eyebrow. Lipstick: Pinks are always good! Pick out a flattering and bright color that will show up nicely on stage. It s best to use a brush to first outline the lips, then fill in the rest. You can top it off with a gloss if desired. Refrain from using anything with a shine or glitter. When doing make-up, go darker and heavier than what you think is acceptable. When not on stage, it will look like A LOT of make-up; this is perfect under the stage lights. Also, please do not spend a ton of money on make-up for your dancer. Since the girls don t wear make-up every day, there is little reason to buy high end make-up. You can even use what you use for yourself, if appropriate. If you need to purchase make-up, the super affordable brands such as Wet N Wild or ELF (found at Target and Meijer) will work just fine for one night of heavy make-up. Videography Videotaping of the performance is not allowed at recital. We have a videographer who records the recital. DVD s are $20 each. Checks can be made to Paul Zaker Video Productions. Pizza Party We invite all guests to stay for our Pizza Party after the show! The Pizza Party will take place in the Glenbard North Cafeteria immediately following the conclusion of the recital. This is a fun way for dancers and families to relax after the dance season J Contact Information: Miss Sam (head of dance program): SamanthaRWink@gmail.com Dale (Dance Supervisor): Dale_Hanstad@glendaleheights.org Sports Hub: 630-260-6060

Costumes 101: What I Can and Cannot Do Costumes are one of the best parts of dance! Just like anything else, there are certain things that are and are not allowed with costumes. The following goes for Picture Day, Dress Rehearsal, and Recital Do s: Steam, fluff, and make any alterations prior to Picture Day. Re-fluff and re-steam as needed before Dress Rehearsal and Recital. Put your name on everything! Label every costume, pair of tights, pair of shoes, etc. with your name as things can get mixed up pretty quickly. Double check all accessories that came with your costume are still there. It is your responsibility to have all appropriate accessories and costume pieces. Wear all pieces of the costume for Picture Day, Dress Rehearsal, and Recital as shown in the picture attached with your costume. Layer your tights for quick changes. Put tan tights on first, and pink over them. It makes it easier and faster to change costumes, and nobody will be able to tell you are wearing two pairs of tights. Wear a cover-up over your costume when not performing. Accidents happen, and this prevents food, make-up, or anything else from spilling on or staining the costume. Don ts: Don t add your own accessories. The only things allowed to be worn with each costume are what came with it. Extra or wrong jewelry, hair pieces, etc. will be asked to be removed. Refusal to comply will forfeit the dancer s performance participation. o If you have pierced ears, you may wear silver or crystal stud earrings. Don t wear underwear with your costume. Tights act as underwear, and we do not want to see undergarments peeking out beneath costumes. o Older dancers: If you purchased a nude body liner, this goes on UNDER your tights. It is the first thing you will put on. Don t eat in costume! Costumes are delicate and cannot be thrown in the wash in order to get stains out. Garment Bag Checklist The following items should be in your super awesome garment bag on Picture Day, Dress Rehearsal, and Recital. Try to pack your bag the night before and double check you have everything before you leave your house.
