PRESIDENT S REPORT 2006 It Is With Pleasure That I Bring To You The Annual Report For The Year 2006. The season started on a very positive note when a very well attended Special Meeting made, in my opinion, the right decision to allow a player to return to the game and we have had no problems during the season. I would like to thank all those who took over for me during my absence. Firstly when the President, Senior Vice President and Junior Vice President all took off at the same time for a holiday and secondly when I became ill. It demonstrated what a strong Association we have and the capability of people always ready to step up to help. The Macleay Netball Association is indeed in good hands. I would like to thank our wonderful sponsors who make it possible for the Association to operate successfully. Our sponsors for this season included the Macleay Medical Centre who supported Netta and for the first time we welcomed aboard Eagle Boys who were the major sponsor of the Saturday Junior Competition. Raine & Horne continued their very important sponsorship of both the Junior and Senior Umpires and Ian Dunbar sponsored the much sort after massage prizes. Mavin & McNamara sponsored the Most Valuable Player Awards with Fay and John Bowell and Margaret McKiernan sponsoring the Special Junior Awards. Our wonderful senior sponsor was Irvine s Showcase Jewellers. This year Irvine's added another incentive of a special members draw. This draw of a $250 voucher was conducted at the Senior Presentation Night and was for those who purchased from the store and were Macleay Association registered members with Anne Riedel as the lucky recipient. Many thanks to you once again Dean and Gayle for your valuable continued support. Thanks also to the Townsend Family for their sponsorship of the Umpires Award. I must also thank those businesses who sponsor the Clubs and Teams that go to make up the Association. My thanks to the Vice Presidents Clare and June who had a little more to do this year than normal but as usual were there when needed. To Secretary Edwina another great year Ed, how you ever fit it all in, work and study, coach, umpire, manage a team and still find time to be a wife and Mum its no wonder you sometimes get a bit crazy with us all. To all the other Executive Members, Management Committee Members, Canteen workers, Control Room helpers and all those that assisted in any special way, my thanks. We all know who those special people are and without them the Association would not be able to operate. A special mention to Kylie Nicholson who took on the Treasurer s position when our previous Treasurer Vicki Sutton moved from the district. A great job and well done Kylie you filled Vicki's shoes very well indeed. Another lot of big shoes was left to fill when we lost our Umpire s Convenor, Robyn Townsend. Odette Brown stepped into these shoes and it was done admirably. It s not an easy job and sometimes I know Odette was ready to tear her hair out but you did a wonderful job. The Junior competition was again a success under the guidance of Karen Lambley. It is great to see the young members of our Association so keen and happy. Hopefully they will continue in this great sport for many years. Congratulations to all Representative Coaches, Umpires and players for the way in which you con- Macleay Netball Annual Report 4

ducted yourselves on behalf of the Association together with your Assistant Coaches and Managers. It was always a privilege to say I belonged to those people from the Macleay whether it was at local Carnivals, State, State Age or State League events you always made us very proud. Congratulations to all winners and runners-up in all age and grade competitors, to all players player award winners, most valuable players, to umpires award winners and to the Saints Netball Club who won the Club of the Year Award, you are doing a great job keep it up! The Junior Member of the Year was Anna Nicholson and it was well deserved. Anna was always ready to lend a hand to anyone who wanted it. The Senior Member of the year went to Lynne McMillan for her untiring work with her Club, Team, Umpiring, the Competition Fixtures Book and her many great suggestions as Macleay Comets Club delegate on the running of the Association. Jackie Williams as Fund Raising Co-Ordinator which included the Representative Co- Ordinator always made sure the Committee was informed as to what was going on. Congratulations once again to Kimberley Borger on her selection in the State Side and her ongoing move up the ladder of success and to Janita Smith for her success with the Academy. We have had a very busy and successful season. I hope to see you all again in 2007. TREASURER S REPORT 2006 This year has been a challenge, to say the least. After taking on the role of Assistant Treasurer for the Macleay Netball Association I found myself wondering why. After an initial settling in period my partner in crime, Vicki Sutton, decided to leave town and left me to assume the role of Treasurer. This position is one that requires a lot of time and effort, and at times has been extremely frustrating. I have managed to complete the tasks at hand and with the help of Auditor Jeff Clegg, who has offered some very constructive hints will be able to assume the position with more confidence in the coming season. I wish to thank Jeff for his time and effort, it was much appreciated. I have submitted several motions to be put to the Annual General Meeting. These are a result of the concerns that I have as Treasurer for the financial consideration of the Association. I have moved that a levy be placed on all fees to cover some of the costs that are incurred by the association, which increase every year. This levy does have to allow for increases which we are unable to control, such as the NSW Netball Association increasing their fees. The association must consider the loss of sponsorship and how the association endeavours to cover the cost of both Junior and Senior Presentations. Teams and clubs like to receive trophies at presentations and trophies are a substantial cost even with the generosity of our sponsors. A variation of $1500.00 was required in 2006 and it is anticipated that this figure will increase in the coming years. The Association must consider the future requirements and maintenance and repair of our assets, the courts and club house. The association has no funds set aside to begin this task indicating no record of our capabilities to repay a loan/grant if one was to become available. We are not in a position to apply for a 50:50 grant if we can not indicate an ability to repay. These suggestions are just that, suggestions. I would ask that all clubs, teams and the Association Executive to consider all the possibilities that may occur in the coming season before we set our fees for 2007. Yes it can be hard making ends meet. But the association has to take a realistic view. How are we going to maintain our courts in the future? We will not be able to continue to rely on Council funding as budgets become tighter and sporting groups will be forced to make a commitment to the maintenance of fields such as they are doing on the Central Coast. The Macleay Netball Association has many great things to offer the Macleay and district community. It has a dedicated committee who work tirelessly to keep the Association operating both efficiently and smoothly. I would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the Association throughout the year, our sponsors, for their generosity, the canteen ladies for their tireless efforts, the District Net- Macleay Netball Annual Report 6

JUNIOR COMPETITION CONVENORS REPORT 2006 Karen Lambley The 2006 competition consisted of 10 Netta teams, 6 ten year old teams, 4 eleven year old teams, 6 twelve year old teams, 5 thirteen year old teams and 6 fourteen year old teams. While there were not as many teams as last year, most of the teams had 10 or 11 members. We started the season with the primary school Gala Day held before registration day. The schools that attended appreciated the efficient and safe environment provided. The children, especially the boys, and the adults enjoyed the day again and our association gained players from the day. Thank you to Lynne McMillan for organising the day. We conducted the Introduction to Netta on the first day of play. This has the advantage of not only explaining Netta rules and expectations to the coaches and interested parents but it also gives these people contact with association officials. Thank you to Wendy Sales for being the Netta consultant through out the season. The Netta coaches appreciate your wealth of experience and knowledge. The ten year old teams played the first round with their coaches umpiring their own team in order to provide a transition from Netta. This was generally regarded as successful. Many coaches of the junior teams expressed a need for consistent and authoritative umpiring each Saturday, as very young girls, with or without older assistance, were not providing an appropriate level of control so as to ensure a safe and fair game. This is not something that the Umpire s Convenor can address alone. This needs the support and assistance of the whole Association at all levels, in particular, at club level. Thank you to the Junior Sub-committee, Kala Lambley and Jane Walsh, for their assistance in conducting the junior competition. Thank you to Alan Thorne for doing the time-keeping all season. Thank you to all the coaches who put in an enormous amount of time and effort every week in order to develop the netball players of the Macleay. Macleay Netball Annual Report 18

COACHING CONVENOR REPORT 2006 Karen Lambley The 2006 Coaching Sub-committee was made up of Debbie Burley, Edwina Brown, Jacky Dixon, Kay Iverach, Sonya Murphy and Wendy Sales. We conducted four skills development sessions from the end of the 2005 season for 11 to 14 year olds. These were well attended and all participants showed an improvement in basic skills. The last year has seen the establishment of a small resource library for coaches and it was encouraging to have the Association s coaches sourcing a variety of drills to develop and motivate their players. An Orientation to Coaching Course was offered but had to be cancelled due to a lack of numbers. Early notification of a date for next year may see better attendance. The Department of Sport and Recreation conducted three Sports Strapping courses which a number of our coaches attended and appreciated. A number of Macleay girls attended the North Coast Academy of Sport trials and three, Janita Smith, Milly Daley and Jana Daros made it through to the second phase. Janita was then selected to be part of the academy team. Our fifteen year old representative team participated in the State League Competition, in the newly created Division 3. The girls performed well, achieving the runners-up title. However, it was felt that the added competition days and the need for a double peak in their lead up to State Age affected their result at the Championships. The 17 year old representative team participated in the second division of State League and the Opens were our division one team. Our Championship results were as follows: Opens 7 th Minor Division 17 s 9 th 3 rd Division Masters 15 th Over 40 s 15 s 23 rd 2 nd Division 14 s 8 th 2 nd Division 13 s 4 th 3 rd Division 12 s 4 th 3 rd Division We also formed a Development Squad again this year. Thank you very much to Vicky O Neil for coaching this squad. 2006 was also a year of inter-association co-operation with representative teams. Hastings Valley did not form a team for the 17 s competition so released a player to us for the Championships. Nambucca Valley was having trouble forming junior teams so borrowed six of our Development Squad players. This provided a lot of playing experience for these girls. Thank you to the assistant coaches of the representative teams: Wendy Cowan, Kate Patterson, Whitney Williams and Leah Warwick. The representative team coaches greatly appreciate the input and assistance from these people. Karen Lambley Macleay Netball Annual Report 19

UMPIRE CONVENOR S REPORT 2006 Odette Brown I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for their hard work & support for 2006. A huge thank you to Raine & Horne for their sponsorship for the umpire's program this year. This year Raine and Horne sponsored both the Junior and Senior Umpires, supplying them with shirts. These looked wonderful on final weekends. An engraved photo frame with photo of 2006 Umpires has been presented to Raine and Horne in appreciation of their support. This year Macleay Netball Association gained two National C Badged Umpires. Jemma Hayes Hanley was awarded her National C at the Great Lakes State League Carnival. Kate Patterson was awarded her National C at the A grade grand final. Congratulations to both girls. You have taken the first step to becoming brilliant umpires. Keep developing your skills for there is always more to learn. The National Umpires Theory Exam was held in May with 24 sitting the exam. The results were very pleasing and we had 17 passes. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following Umpires; Jemma Hayes-Henley, Kala Lambley, Kay Iverach, Kate Patterson, Olivia Bailey, Renee Bailey, Edwina Brown, Christie Hazelwood, Nina Dixon, Nadine McElwaine, Karen Lambley, Wendy Cowan and Lynne McMillan. Without these umpires Saturday competition would not have gone ahead. Some of these ladies umpired 2 games and played 2 and never complained of how tired they were, or that they did not want to do it. You will always be stars in my eyes for the on going support that you have given me. Without people like you I am sure I would not have survived. Thank you. The Umpires who travelled this year to Carnivals, State Championships, State Age Championship and State League Carnivals are Nadine McElwaine, Wendy Cowan, Renee Bailey, Bernie Sinclair, Kala Lambley, Jemma Hayes Henley, Lynne McMillan, Kristy Hazelwood, and Alana Williams. A big thank you to all these ladies, as without them, our teams cannot attend Carnivals. A very special mention to Debbie Burley, Karen Lambley, Edwina Brown, Kate Patterson, Kay Iverach and Wendy Cowan. On a number of carnivals I was unable to meet the required supply of umpires. These Coaches assisted by umpiring on the opposite round to when their teams played. Thank you for your support. The Townsend Family Junior Umpire of the Year Award This was awarded to Christie Hazelwood. Christie attended a number of Representative Carnivals during the year and was very capable of doing so. She umpired not only junior but senior levels. Christie is a keen little umpire with a lot of talent. I do hope Christie carries on Umpiring into the 2007 season as I believe she has what it takes to gain her National C badge. Congratulations Christie on Season well done. The Netta Mathews Senior Umpire of the Year Award This was awarded to Kate Patterson. Throughout the year Kate has always been one person who I could continuously rely on to help umpire for the junior and senior rounds. She gave up her role as an Assistant Coach to the 13 Rep team, to fill an umpiring duty on more than one occasion. This for me showed how much dedication Kate has to not only Umpiring but also to the Macleay Macleay Netball Annual Report 21

Netball Association. Apart from being able to present this award to Kate, my highlight for the year was Kate receiving her National C Badge after Umpiring the A grade Grand final. I was extremely proud of Kate and the brilliant enthusiasm she displayed. Kate deserved the Neita Mathews Senior Umpires award totally. This year was my first attempt of filling the position of Umpires Convenor. I decided while at the NSW Netball AGM that I would like to play a bigger role in the Macleay Netball Association. And a new role I got. I had many a moment of wanting to quit, not go to Saturday competition and pull the plug all together. I stayed because it is not in me to quit and I couldn t leave the association that has given me so much in the lurch. We seemed to have experienced small hiccup after hiccup with teams withdrawing, draws being changed and the weather not playing fair. I believe that Macleay Netball finished the season strongly because their members came together as a team and crossed that finishing line together. I have learnt this year through my role of Umpires Convenor that a sporting association such as ours does not run on its own. It is a team sport and takes a team to organise. I hope that next season we will grow together as a team and reach all goals set. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to fill this position and I hope that next season, maybe I will improve just a little. REGISTRAR S REPORT 2006 Robert Guyer Membership has again suffered a downturn with 545 members registering as compared to 595 members for the previous season. A breakdown of classifications can be seen in the following table. Registrations were better managed this year with the co-operation of Clubs. Regular reports were given to Clubs on their membership allowing them to chase up unpaid players. This allowed checks on players to be made earlier in the season and this resulted in withdrawal of some teams from competition as they did not have sufficient members registered. Spot checks were made throughout the season and some teams lost points for playing nonregistered members. This places the Association as well as the player in a precarious position if an accident should occur. Finally I must thank my assistant Kay Iverach for the many hours sorting out the registrations and chasing up the non-payers. Also thanks to other Executive members and Clubs for their assistance. It is a big job (I would hate to be doing a large Association!) and without the assistance given, it would be a full-time job for someone during the winter months. CATEGORY AGE GROUP CODE NO.
