Flugel Netball Club Inc PO Box 3180 Newmarket Brisbane QLD 4051 http://dpnaflugel.netball.asn.au Flugel Annual General Meeting Netball Club Thursday 17 th Sept, 2009 The Grove Establishment Waterworks Rd, Ashgrove A) Presidents Report A warm welcome to all our new families who joined us for the 2009 Season and welcome back to those returning from last year. Numbers were up this year, with 232 players registering to have 12 Competitive and 12 Netta teams. It certainly does look great on Saturdays with everyone in the new uniform this season. Subaru Toowong remains our major sponsor for this year, and with their funding, we were able to purchase the bibs displaying their web address. This is also printed on the back of official shirts as well. May I thank them for this support, as any funding received makes it a little easier to finance the Club throughout the year. I love a raffle raised $2189.00 for the Club, which was a great result. The Committee has done a wonderful job and without them, and all the Managers, Coaches and Umpires, we would not be in the position we are now. Thank you!!! Well, another year of not only rain, rain, rain, but floods as well. It has been trying on everyone, but we have got through it. To those who helped DPNA get back into order, well done. Our umpires have done a fantastic job, with 24 Flugel Umpires assisting with our Club games this year. We currently have two (2) umpires training for their National B badge and eight (8) training for their National C. A special mention is extended to our new and up-coming umpires who continue to progress their umpiring pathway. Congratulations to one of our favorite helpers, Lynn Vickers who was awarded her National B badge this year. Well done! My favorite event this year (apart from the raffle, I love a raffle ) was Adopt a Netta Night. It was wonderful to see all the littlies with all the biggies and cheering the Trial game between the two Opens Teams. Then to see the teams pairing up and sharing a pizza was just a wonderful sight. This night will be a regular event from now on. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. What a year for Flugel! Of the 12 Competitive Teams, 8 made the Semis, 6 then progressed to the Finals and 3 teams made the Grand Final. Teams 5 and 6 won their finals and Team 10 went down in a hard fought game. Congratulations to all our Teams for this Year. Our annual BREAK UP was held at the Brisbane Broncos Auditorium on Sunday 13 th September. The day was pretty hectic but was enjoyed by all. A huge thank you to Julie Blazek who arranged everything; including the trophies, the trivia questions and the gifts, 2009 Flugel Annual Report Page 1 of 6

but was unable to attend in person due to family commitments elsewhere. What a trouper! The initial response to requests for people to attend the AGM was underwhelming to say the least, but a late surge will see 9 Committee and 17 new faces attending. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have taken the time out of their busy schedules to attend tonight. This is the best club and for it to continue successfully we need this ongoing support with the Committee roles. Ray Burton President B) TREASURER S Report Financial Year ending 30 June 2009 I would like to thank all the current Flugel Committee Members for their support to me in this new appointment within the Flugel Family. I have enjoyed the role and look forward to helping out again during the next season. RESULTS 2009 The Membership Income for the 08/09 year was $57,196.00 The net profit as at 30 June 2009 was $6,060.94 The balance of the bank account as at 30 June 2009 was $33,514.71. As the netball year concludes with the break-up, and the financials are reflective as at the 30 th June, there are expenses that overlap from the previous year and some still need to be paid for the current year. These should be finalised in the next few days. A copy of the financials is available for viewing, and copies are made available on request. Marilyn Burton Treasurer C) COACHING NON-COMPETITIVE Report We had a very successful season in 2009. It started with some grief over team selection but settled down after a while. Having a number of Committee members there for the first few training sessions to act as guides and answer basic questions work extremely well. Also successful was sending one team at a time over to the uniform shop on the first day. Many thanks for those who gave their time to make calm the chaos of the new season. The Adopt-A-Netta pizza night was a huge success. Only three teams weren t able to attend due to school commitments. It was a great opportunity for the younger players to find out what happens in the competitive world. 2009 Flugel Annual Report Page 2 of 6

D) UMPIRING Report During 2009, twenty-four (24) Flugel umpires assisted with club games during the winter season. We were also able to utilise umpires from other clubs as well as provide umpires in return. Early in the season we were able to provide a Level 1 Umpire Course conducted by Diane Cocker who is an All Australia (AA) umpire in fact, the only practicing AA in Queensland. Thirteen (13) club members attended this course along with another two (2) umpires from other clubs. Seven (7) of our Flugel umpires have completed their on-line officiating course this year which is a new requirement by the Australian Sports Commission and six (6) Flugel umpires have successfully completed their on-line Level 1 Umpire Theory Exam. Although no new badges have been awarded this season, we currently have two (2) umpires training for their National B badge and another eight (8) umpires in training for their National C badge. A special mention is extended to our new and up-coming Flugel umpires Sophie Blakely, Elise Brown, Shannon Cook, Madeleine Curthoys, Morgan Jones-Boyd, Kennedy Murray, Georgie O Hare, Emily Poole and Lauren Wilson who have demonstrated significant talent and willingness to learn as they have commenced or continue to progress their umpiring pathway. A sincere thank you to our Flugel umpires and other umpire colleagues who have contributed to the success of our 2009 club season! Cathy Hindmarsh and Lynn Vickers Flugel Umpire Co-convenors E) REGISTRAR S Report I took on this role this Year, as again it was difficult to find people to help the Committee and I m glad I did. It gave me a greater insight into who was joining or rejoining Flugel. Names remained with me, and I was able this year to put names to faces more readily than I was last. It gave me a greater opportunity to meet more players and mums and dads, So I m pleased. The roll up this year was huge with 232 players signing on. This made up 12 Competitive Teams and 12 Netta. Some interesting figures coming out of this are: 3 families have 3 daughters playing this Year and 19 families have 2 daughters playing, And, of these there are 3 sets of twins. The excel spreadsheet that was used to create this registrar was totally revamped in 2009, making it very user friendly. This made life pretty easy for the Committee with easy access to correct data to assist them in creating Teams at the start of the season and then able to communicate with Managers, Coaches, Umpires and players throughout the season. F) UNIFORM Report The sale of uniforms was much smoother this year. However, it was still hard to predict numbers as it was the first year that the whole club was wearing the uniform. I believe it will take several years before we have a solid history of sales on which to base our ordering. Selling from the Hockey Hall was great as we didn't have to worry about weather issues which are a big concern in January. I would like to advocate booking the hall now for the first two or three Saturdays of the season once we know those dates. The same weather issues made selling on the competitive nights difficult as it rained quite frequently. It is hard to carry all the boxes of uniforms over to the cafeteria area. I'm not sure where the tent is these days? The two biggest issues are: 1) getting the numbers right for ordering, and 2) people not sorting out their uniform needs in the first three weeks of training. These first 3 weeks are the 'official' selling times. This year, calculating how many dresses we needed was particularly hard as we had an extra team of Open girls join and they all needed dresses. I had to put in the order quite late and then hope they arrived in time. I also didn't know what size to order as not all the girls came to training before the cut off time for ordering. The only solution to this is to have plenty of stock in hand - not great business practice but something I can't see any way around. I would like to see the Registration Form state very clearly that selling of uniforms will only take place on the first three weeks of training thereafter people will have to call me and make arrangements. This will hopefully prevent the necessity of bringing all those boxes along week after week. We have similar stock levels as at the end of 2008 and my ordering strategy will be to assume similar numbers to 2009 and bring stock up to this amount. I will place orders in late November. I have enjoyed the role of Uniform Convenor and I am particularly grateful for the help I received from other committee members to sell the uniforms. The more people involved in the early days the easier and quicker the process. I am happy to do one more year in this role. However, I would really like to find someone to 'shadow' me so as to take it on in 2011. Jacky Marr Uniform Convenor G) CANTEEN Report The Club was asked to provide volunteers to staff the canteen for four days during the season. The first date was rained out, and the people involved were rescheduled for the make-up day. For Carnival Day, the DPNA changed the times that we were needed a week before, again making it necessary to re-roster parents. These changes, together with peoples general inability to respond, meant that a lot of time was spent chasing people up. 2009 Flugel Annual Report Page 4 of 6

In hindsight, it would have been far less time consuming if I had made it the responsibility of the Managers to fill their timeslots, rather than assign individuals. We also incurred several fines with people not turning up. Proposed: Any future fines for a team not fulfilling their role at canteen will be put back to the Team responsible. Put to DPNA to outsource canteen or pay junior players to work the canteen. Flugel is happy to pay a levy to DPNA if necessary. Proposed Ray, Second Diane Recommendations for 2010 Managers to resume responsibility for assigning their parents to rosters. Team to pay any fine incurred. Consider approaching DPNA about changes to the whole canteen system. Julie Blazek Canteen Convenor H) BREAK-UP Report On Sunday Sept 13, 198 Flugel-philes attended a buffet breakfast at the Broncos (for the third year in succession). Numbers were down from previous year due to clashes with various school based events. The morning was short and sweet and most seem to enjoy the shorted presentation and the brief speech by the President. The trophies and gifts to volunteers were on the team tables as they arrived and only the acknowledgement of the umpires, the coach s awards and gifts to the committee were done at the stage. Again we decided as a Committee to hold the AGM separately from the break-up, as per last year. This works well. My main tasks for the Break Up were: - receiving numbers / money/ allocating tables/liaising with Broncos - choosing /organizing trophies for players - choosing /organizing awards for officials - trivia questions / entertainment (simplified this year as I was unable to attend) Considerations for 2010 Possibly change of venue/ format after 3 years, to keep things fresh Separate break-ups for Netta and Competitive teams. This has been raised, but personally I feel it is nice for the whole Club to be together. I will be standing down from this position, and am very happy to pass on all relevant information and templates to my replacement. I have really enjoyed working with this wonderful, enthusiastic Committee. Go Flugel! Julie Blazek Break-Up Convenor 2009 Flugel Annual Report Page 5 of 6

I) EQUIPMENT CONVENOR S REPORT Managers & Coaches The best part of being the equipment convenor, as I said last year, is meeting all the managers and coaches for our teams. This year we handed out 12 bags to Competitive Teams and 12 bags to Netta Teams. A fantastic result for our club - 24 teams! These bags held 121 balls, 168 bibs, 216 witch s hats, 26 skipping ropes and 12 pole pads (Netta only). Also, The Manager of each team received an information folder and First Aid Kit. The Club also has a Fitness Bag containing further equipment to help in training, eg. the rope ladders from this bag were utilised this season. Our equipment bags are quite large and this year we attempted to get most of the coaches to come to our car boots to collect them, instead of myself and my very steady back up in equipment, Kerri Watson, having to lug the bags to the coaches. At this point, I would like to thank Kerri Watson for all her support in whatever need the Club has. She is always there with her hand up to help. Thank you, Kerri. NB. Both these roles could entertain at least two more people. They are both feel good roles and the more people involved, the better. This year, my First Aid Kit re-supplier/work-it-out person was my daughter Alice Moir (aged 15 at the time), who is also Flugel player. She sorted out our re-stocking very quickly and neatly and I thank her for that. Then there is my husband, the President, Ray Burton, who spent so much time writing Flugel on every ball, skipping rope and witch s hat (and whatever else he could put a name on) he got writers cramp. Can I say, thank you, Ray!! The equipment convenor covers two roles, so it works well with two or more people supporting each other. Role one, is re-stocking the first aid kits and updating the Team Manager s Folder in which information is given on who to contact in the club for support and general information to support the team throughout the year. Role two, is re-stocking the coach s equipment bag. At the end of the season each bag needs to be gone through to clean it up (yes, I m afraid so) and to assess what is missing and required through to the next season. We then have to buy the necessary equipment for the next season. The club rents a shed for storage from a private family, who are lovely people and they live in the Newmarket/Alderley region. If we have a club member or two who would like to take up this/these positions, they would not be left alone to cope. Support from the committee is there: Ray Burton who knows how to put names on everything and I, Marilyn, (although, Alice is better at it) can help on the first aid kit replenishment. I can help with The Managers Folders too. You will not be left alone. Kind Regards, Marilyn Burton 2009 Flugel Annual Report Page 6 of 6
