CHESTERFIELD AND DISTRICT TENNIS LEAGUE SUMMER FIXTURES, LEAGUE RULES and CLUB CONTACTS 2018

CHESTERFIELD & DISTRICT LAWN TENNIS SUMMER LEAGUE RULES FOR SUMMER LEAGUE COMPETITION 1. The Competition will be called The Chesterfield and District League Competition. There will be an annual fee for each club entered. Fees are to be paid by 1 April. The summer season runs from 1 April to 30 September. 2. The constitution of the competition and the grouping of the competing Clubs will be determined by the Committee of the Chesterfield and District League (the Committee.) 3. Fixtures will be arranged, so far as practicable, at a League Meeting to be held in March. A copy of all fixtures will be passed to the League Secretary so that a fixture list may be compiled and distributed to League Clubs. These must be sent to the Secretary within two days of the meeting unless an extension is agreed by the Secretary. 4. No club is to have more than two teams in the same division of the League. A Club having more than one team in the competition must nominate their best players to be starred players. These players will be eligible to play for the first team only. The names are to be given to the League Secretary along with the fixtures, within a week of the meeting. Where there are three couples playing, four players must be starred. Where there are only two couples playing, two players must be starred. Where two club teams play in the same division, their match must be the first game of the season. 5. Depending on the number of clubs in a division, teams will either play each other twice (both home and away) or just once, in which case the match should be played at the opposite club to the previous season. The Committee will decide the relevant number of clubs that determines whether one match or two is played. In general, the number of matches played each season will be approximately six to eight. 6. Mixed matches and Division 1 Men matches will consist of nine rubbers all doubles i.e. each pair plays three rubbers. Each rubber will consist of two sets (each finishing with a tie break at 6 all). In the event of a set all being reached, the rubber is to be taken as being completed and recorded as a draw, each Club scoring half a rubber. Ladies and Men Division 2 matches will consist of two couples playing four rubbers. The Ladies will play two sets with a tie break at 6 all. The Men will play best of three sets where the third set is a championship tie break, i.e. the first to 10 points. {Please note that currently there is still only one Division for Men - March 2018}

7. The start time for afternoon matches is 2 p.m. and for evening matches, 6 p.m. unless agreed otherwise between the teams. If the rubbers have started, no substitutes are allowed for the players who have already taken part in that particular match. If any pair of players is not ready to play within: 15 minutes of the start time, they will forfeit the first set. 30 minutes of the start time, they will forfeit the rubber. 1 hour of the start time, they will forfeit the second rubber. 1½ hours of the start time, they will forfeit the third rubber. 8. A player will not in any one season play for more than one Club in any one section (Men s, Ladies or Mixed) of the Competition and must be a bona fide member of each Club for which he or she plays, i.e. a member who has paid the full annual subscription and entrance fee to the Club for which he or she plays. 9. The result of every match must be recorded on the designated match result card and signed by the captain of each team (or nominee.) The result is to be sent by the home club to the League Secretary on the official match result card within a week of the fixture. Each match should have a properly completed result, i.e. in the event of the match being unfinished, agreement should be reached between the teams captains as to the score to be shown for any unfinished set(s) and the final result. 10. For each win a Club will be awarded two points. In the event of a match finishing with each team having won an equal number of rubbers, one point will be awarded to each club. The Club obtaining the highest number of points in any division during the season will be the winners thereof. In the event of a draw based on points alone at the end of the season, account will be taken of the number of rubbers won, and if necessary sets won, and, if necessary, the number of games won. 10a As a common courtesy to other teams, if a Club is unable to field a team for a match, or requires to cancel for any reason, the Captain of the cancelling Club must make contact with the opposing side s Captain, at the earliest opportunity, to advise of the cancellation. Making contact is to be construed as actually speaking to the other team s Captain or leaving a message that is responded to in a way that makes clear notification of the cancellation has been received and acknowledged. 11. Any fixture changes agreed between Clubs must be notified to the League Secretary. All postponements must also be notified. All rearrangements should be the responsibility of the home team. If a Club fails to put in an appearance at an arranged or rearranged fixture, or is unable to field a team, the opposing Club will be awarded two points. When any match is conceded, 2 points will be given to the team awarded the match and all sets shown as 6-0 to the winning team.

12. The Captains of the opposing Teams will, if necessary, agree upon umpires who will see that matches are played out in accordance with the laws of the Lawn Tennis Association. 13. The Club at whose ground a match is being played will provide a minimum of three new covered balls of the season per court, of a recognised tournament brand. 14. Unfinished matches will be continued from where left off, providing the same players continue in the incomplete rubbers. If it is necessary to bring in substitutes, the match must recommence from scratch. 15. If a Club withdraws from the competition before completing the fixtures, all records of matches played will be deleted. 16. Promotion and relegation (if applicable) will be automatic, the number of teams being promoted and relegated will be determined by the Committee and dependent upon the number of teams in each League. Promotion and relegation will be decided (if necessary) by taking into consideration rubbers, sets and games. 17. All differences and disputes will be referred to and settled by the Committee. Short particulars thereof should be sent in writing to the League Secretary by the Secretaries of the Clubs concerned. 18. The Challenge Cups will be offered for competition annually and be held for 12 months by the Clubs winning the Ladies, Men s and Mixed Leagues, with the proviso that no trophy be won outright. Trophies to be returned as requested by the League Secretary. The cost of engraving trophies will be met by the League. 19. For breach of any of these rules and for any irregularity, the Committee may impose such penalties either by deduction of points or otherwise as it may think fit. 20. These rules will not be altered, rescinded, or added to except where authorised by a two thirds majority of those voting at a Committee Meeting of which notice has been given specifying the intention to propose such alteration, rescission or addition.
