MIAC PLAYOFFS In a race that came down to the final series of the regular season, St. Thomas locked down the top seed and the regular season championship with a sweep over Hamline, while Saint John s claimed the No. 2 seed and Augsburg earning the No. 3 seed. Gustavus qualified for the conference playoffs each previous season since the tournament expanded to five teams in 2002-03. Making its 24th appearance in the playoffs this season, Gustavus holds a 20-24 record with four playoff titles since the four-team MIAC Tournament was initiated for the 1986-87 season. Gustavus and Augsburg split its regular series series Jan. 19-20, with the Gusties earning a 4-1 victory over the then No. 14-ranked Auggies in game one prior to settling for the series split as Augsburg prevailed 3-2 in Minneapolis, Minn. during game two. Despite being outshot 14-6 and Augsburg owning an 18-6 advantage in faceoffs in the first frame, Jake McCann s goal at the 12:52 minute mark gave Gustavus a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission. The Gusties went on their second power play chance eight minutes into the second period and capitalized quickly to gain a 2-0 lead. Will LeNeave slid a backdoor pass right on the tape of Colton Schmidt for the eventual game-winner. Augsburg got on the board with a power play goal of their own at 15:12 as a shot from the point snuck past Chris Amsden to cut the Gustavus lead to 2-1. The Auggies pulled their goalie with under two minutes remaining in an attempt to tie the game, but two empty-net goals sealed the first Gustavus victory over a ranked opponent since 2012. After tying the game at two apiece near the end of the second period, an Augsburg goal just under three minutes into the final frame stood as the game-winner as the Gustavus men s hockey team fell 3-2 Saturday evening. Colin Hernon opened the scoring just 54 seconds into the second period, but penalties began to riddle the Gusties as Augsubrg answered with two goals, scoring on 1-of-4 power play chances. Jared Bromberg tied the game later in the period as the score read 2-2 after two frames. Augsburg outshot Gustavus 17-10 in the second period, while the Gusties countered with an 11-7 shot advantage in the third period. However, an Auggie goal during an odd-man rush at 2:47 of the third would be the eventual game-winner. Goaltender Robbie Goor suffered the loss in net for the Black and Gold, tying a career-high with 31 saves.
