President s Message Hi All, Castro Valley Ski Club Newsletter Well, as most of you know, this winter isn t stacking up much different than last year. All the Sierra resorts could use some serious snow, and they are making snow to be able to stay open. As die-hard skiers make the most of the minimal conditions, we are getting better at making do with what we have. I hope you have been able to get some good runs in at local ski areas. Oh, if we could only be getting the snow that the east coast is getting now! As many of us head out for Steamboat Springs, Colorado and Whistler, B.C. the skiing will be plentiful and, from the reports I have been receiving, quite good. I hope that out-of-state skiing is not the only skiing to be had in the foreseeable future. I also hope we don t have to take up another winter sport like tennis or shuffleboard or something that doesn t involve snow! After all, we are all members of a Ski Club. We had a good, lively, rowdy meeting on January 21 at Don Jose s ~ lots of good conversation, some goodnatured ribbing and sharing juicy stories ~ I hope you will be able to make it to the next meeting on February 18. Please bring your tales of ski days and other travels and experiences. So, get out there and catch a few runs ~ then live to tell the tales to all of us! Karen Karen Wehrman President CVSC members enjoying a trip to Vail, CO early in January... THEY FOUND SNOW!!!!!!!! 3
A DAY AT THE RACES... Castro Valley Ski Club Newsletter We are four races into the ski season and it is not February. If the weather in the Sierra holds, we will be putting wheels on our skies to finish out the season. As near as I can tell, we have had 1-3 inches of snow in January-yuck! On the positive side, Dave Cunningham is back racing for Castro Valley. I caught up with him for Race 3 at Alpine Meadows. Some results: Race 2 at Squaw Valley: Brian Taylor placed 1 st in Class 1, Veteran for the men Dave Cunningham placed 1 st in Class 5, Veteran for the men Keith Wilson Race Director Race 3 at Alpine Meadows: Brian Taylor placed 2 nd in his class Dave Cunningham placed 1 st in his class Keith Wilson placed 1 st in Class 10, Veteran with 2 strikes as a returning racer of dubious capability (I do not know what class I will actually be in!) Race 4 at Sugarbowl: Brian Taylor got disqualified oopps! Dave Cunningham placed 1 st in his class Dave s back with a vengeance! Keith Wilson sampled Northstar instead hey, it s on my Season Pass! Sorry, I will miss many of you in Steamboat for the week starting the end of January. I bet they have snow! Our next big event is the Super G at Northstar, Feb 28 th and March 1 st. This event includes a clinic on Saturday, Feb 28 th and a race the next day. This is one, fun event! Here is a reason to go for pure speed on a race course just for fun. The race group is usually moderate in size and the instruction is guaranteed to improve your skiing. If you want to try one race event, this is it! It does not count for anything. For more information, go to the Open League website (see below) and follow the link to Super G. Races beyond that are on March 14 th and 15 th at Northstar. At least those are on my Season Pass (Except for Saturday). I guarantee that the weather will get snowy, so Check Caltrans, road conditions if we get a storm within 24 hours of your trip (1-800-427-7623). The roads are usually cleared 12 hours after the storm ends. Sometimes it just rains on the roads. It helps to have tires rated for mud and snow. (Look for the raised letters M+S on the side of the tire.) It also helps to have all wheel or four wheel drive. In California, if the storm is bad enough that chains are required on four wheel drive vehicles, the roads will be closed. Check out the Open League website, https://sites.google.com/site/openleagueracing. You can go there for links to weather and conditions at your favorite ski resorts and to check for changes in the race schedule. Websites: www.northstarcalifornia.com. Check the Open League Race Committee website for latest news and results: https://sites.google.com/site/openleagueracing. 4
