Amateur Championship 5 Hartefeld s Martinson wins 2010 Amateur title BETHLEHEM, Pa. Justin Martinson of Hartefeld National, a senior at the University of Delaware, exemplified the spirit of his school s mascot, clawing back for a 2&1 victory over Michael Kania of Overbrook GC in the 110th Amateur Championship Final at Saucon Valley CC s Old Course. The Fightin Blue Hen fought himself and his game all day long, trailing a determined Kania 2-down thru 25 holes, before winning the next three to gain an advantage he would never relinquish. That s definitely a group of great players, said Martinson, 21, of Avondale, Pa., when told of previous champions like Jay Sigel, Buddy Marucci, William Hyndman, III and J. Wood Platt. It s a great honor. For the Kania family in general, it was another heartbreak. Last year, brother James, Jr., fell in his attempt to join father James, Sr., as the first father-son tandem to each win the Amateur Championship trophy. Coming in it s something you hope for but it s not something you expect, said Michael Kania of making the final. I was real excited the past two days. Everyone at Overbrook was wishing me good luck. Qualifying starts with 300 people so to be one of the final two is awesome. Martinson s comeback started innocuously enough. Kania was 2-up after winning the 23rd hole (No. 5, par 4, 481 yards) and seemed well in control standing on the 26th tee (No. 8, 423 yards), a par 4 that bends to the left. Kania, solid with the driver all day to that point, however, pulled his tee shot into the left tree line as Martinson found the fairway. Kania was then forced to chip out, but knocked a fantastic third shot to eight feet right of the flag. Martinson knocked a wedge from 130 yards to the center of the green and was left staring at a 15-footer for birdie. Martinson s under-par try just stayed right of the hole and it looked like Kania would escape with his lead intact. Kania s putt than emulated Martinson s chance, though, and skimmed by the hole. His lead was cut in half. On No. 27 (No. 9, par 3, 210 yards), Martinson stepped up and with an air of fresh confidence about him, rocketed a 4-iron that just missed being an ace. He had 15 feet left for birdie. Kania pushed his drive into the right bunker, barely extricated himself but still got caught up in the collar, and would eventually make four. Martinson was conceded a par after just missing with his birdie try. Kania appeared to have an opportunity to at least halt Martinson s momentum on hole No. 30 (No. 12, par 4, Hartefeld National's Justin Martinson, 2010 Amateur Champion 447 yards) with a 25-foot birdie chance from above the flagstick. His try ran a couple feet past. Martinson drained a downhill 15-foot under-par chance of his own to move two ahead. Martinson went 3-up after No. 32 (Hole 14, par 3, 183 yards) when he hit the center of the green with a 5-iron and Kania landed in the right greenside bunker with, in reality, no chance to get his sand shot close. He would skull it over the green and make five. On No. 35 (No. 17, par 4, 422 yards), both players hit solid drives, Kania in the right rough, where he said he s been all week, and Martinson in the fairway. Kania, up first from 156 yards caught a flyer lie and knocked a 9-iron 10 yards over the green. Martinson, after considerable conversation with caddie Tommy Ellison, a University of Delaware teammate, decided for the conservative play and lofted a 52-degree wedge from 114 yards to 25 feet but up the hill. Two putts later, Martinson held the J. Wood Platt Amateur Trophy. Martinson is the first University of Delaware player since ironically, James Kania, Sr., to win the title. He is the first member of Hartefeld to win the crown.

8 Amateur Championship Pine Valley s Raudenbush tops 2010 Am. Qual. Matt Raudenbush of Pine Valley GC has never had trouble hitting a golf ball far. It s accuracy that s been the issue. In the 110th Amateur Championship Qualifier on at Saucon Valley CC and after a strong couple weeks of practice Raudenbush s ills are seemingly cured. Standing 6-foot-2 and a solid 200 pounds, the long-hitting Raudenbush registered 29 of 36 greens in regulation en route to a fantastic 2-under par 141 total (71 on Grace and 70 on Old) and medalist honors in the field of 127. The cut line fell at 152 with five players competing for the final two match-play spots. David West of Whitford CC and Jeff Osberg of Llanerch CC were the final two qualifiers. The last couple of weeks I kind of figured it out, said Raudenbush, 21, of Pine Valley, N.J. I m hitting the ball the right distance. The numbers with my irons have been really good. I m missing a little left or right but pin high most of the time. 2010 Stroke Play Qualifying Results 141 Matt Raudenbush, Pine Valley GC 142 Doug Marcincin, Northampton CC; Justin Martinson, Hartefeld National 145 Matthew Mattare, Saucon Valley CC; Michael Hyland, Little Mill CC; Mike Meisenzahl, Hidden Creek GC 146 Stephen Seiden, Concord CC; Thomas Gramigna, Tavistock CC 147 Benjamin Smith, Woodcrest CC; Jim Rattigan, Schuylkill CC; Michael Kania, Overbrook GC; Jimmy Johnston, Merion GC 148 Anthony Martire, Seaview Resort & Spa 149 John Brennan, Spring Ford CC; Ryan McCarty, Little Mill CC 150 Christopher Lange, Overbrook GC; P. Its namesake is widely regarded as the most influential figure in the Association s history. Platt s amateur résumé features seven Amateur Championships and Silver Cross Awards, four Patterson Cups and a Junior Boys Championship title. He also captured the inaugural U.S. Senior Amateur Championship in 1955. Platt was also a successful administrator in golf. He served as the Association s president on two different occasions. Platt gave back to the game in many ways. His work resonates in the J. Wood Platt Scholarship Trust, which provides financial assistance to young men and women hoping to continue their education.

It is a four-day event that distinguishes the best Amateur golfer in the Philadelphia region. Two qualifying events, as well as pre-existing player exemptions, determine the Amateur Championship field. On the event s first day, more than 130 players compete in a 36-hole qualifier to earn one of 32 spots in a match play draw. Two of those 32 players then must advance through four rounds of golf to gain a spot in the Amateur Final, which traditionally takes place on the day prior to Father s Day. The Final also coincides with the third day of the U.S. Open. Philadelphia Cricket Club s Albert H. Smith captured the first Amateur Championship by defeating J.D. Winsor of Merion Cricket Club in 37 holes at Bala Golf Club. The event s format switched to medal play in 1938. J. Wood Platt went on to win two consecutive Amateurs under that format. His brother William Zimmer Platt earned the 1940 title at Philadelphia Cricket Club by being the only competitor to finish all 72 holes. The event s format reverted back to match play the following year. The Amateur Championship wasn t contested from 1943-1945 because of World War II. Overall, 36 courses have served as host sites. Prominent Philadelphia amateurs such J. Wood Platt, Harold B. McFarland, Max Martson, John Dyniewski, William Hyndman, III, Chris Lange, O. Gordon Brewer, Jr., Buddy Marucci and R. Jay Sigel all have their names etched on the Association s most coveted championship. They include J. Wood Platt, Harold B.
