It s a youth movement for first-year head coach Ryun Williams who has only one senior on his roster. What the roster lacks in experience, it makes up with size. The vast majority of CSU s playing rotation is 5 11 or taller. It s a deep rotation as well as ten different Rams have appeared in ten games or more this season. Colorado State plays at a lower scoring pace, and they re led by Caitlin Duffy (11.7 ppg) and Sam Martin (11.6 ppg). While Colorado State is eighth in scoring offense in the Mountain West, they re allowing a stingy 58.7 points per game (3rd in the MW). The defense has gotten even stronger in league play as CSU has held San Diego State, Air Force and UNLV to a combined 51.7 ppg, nearly seven points per game less than their season average. new mexico game notes * New Mexico picked up the come-from-behind win in their last game versus Boise State on January 16. The Lobos, down by as many as 13 points in second half, came back to post the 58-53 win over the Broncos in The Pit. UNM saw Antiesha Brown (16 points) and Whitney Johnson (14 points) each have career-high scoring nights. It was quite the night for Brown who was playing in The Pit for the first time in her career. * With nine wins through their first 16 games of the 2012-13 season, New Mexico has already matched their regular season win total from the 2011-12 season. Coach Sanchez and company went 9-19 in the regular season last year before going 2-1 in the Mountain West Tournament. * The Lobos can t shake their turnover bug, which plagued them for a majority of the season. They re averaging 19.9 turnovers per game in their last eight games. However in their last two games, Coach Sanchez and company are averaging about 50% fewer turnovers in the second half compared to the first half. * New Mexico won an impressive 13 games in a row against Colorado State from 2004-2009. Since then no team has won more than two games in a row in the series. The series went five years from 1982-87 without either team collecting a third consecutive win against the other. * New Mexico, fourth in the conference in defensive field goal percentage, put the clamps on Boise State shooting in the second half. The Broncos shot 7-31 (22.5%) from the field in the second half after shooting 12-31 (38.7%) in the first. That included limiting three-time MW Player of the Week, Lauren Lenhardt, to just four points on 1-9 (11.2%) shooting in the final frame. * Antiesha Brown has come out of the gates strong in her Lobo career. Brown is already the third-leading scorer on the team. She s set and reset her career high in points in three of her last four games. * Whitney s Johnson 14 points against Boise State were more than her previous four games combined. * Wednesday night s game will feature a battle of two of the top freshman in the conference in Colorado State s Caitlin Duffy and New Mexico s Bryce Owens. Duffy is the leading freshman scorer in the conference at 11.7 points per game. Owens is second in scoring at 8.3 points per game while being the fresman leader in steals and assists. Owens and Duffy are also both in the top 30 in the MW in scoring. * The Silver & Cherry have upped their scoring in Mountain West play. Four Lobos (Durbin, Brown, Johnson and Vaughn) have higher scoring averages so far in conference play than non-conference. * Last week s one-game home stand was UNM s first game in Albuquerque in 39 days. Wednesday night s game at Colorado State is New Mexico s six road contest in their last seven games. * The Rams and the Lobos split last year s season series. Caroline Durbin averaged 14.5 points and 4 rebounds per game against Colorado State. She shot an impressive 50.0% from the field in those games and an scorching-hot 83.3% from beyond the arc versus the Rams. She was supported by Jourdan Erskine in the win at The Pit in late February 2012. The fellow senior was one rebound short of a double-double. * Coach Sanchez and company will look to reverse their road fortunes Wednesday night in Fort Collins. The Lobos are just 1-5 away from The Pit this season.
new mexico game notes * Bryce Owens continues to be one of the top freshmen in the conference. She currently ranks in the top three among MWC freshmen in a number of categories. Owens is second in scoring, first in assists and first in steals among the conference s freshmen. * New Mexico s three-point shooting has been mostly a two-lobo attack. Caroline Durbin and Bryce Owens are a combined 49-134 from beyond the arc. That combined mark represents 74.2% of the team s made three-pointers and 65.6% of the team s attempts. Antiesha Brown (3-13), Sara Halasz (5-22) and Deeva Vaughn (9-22) are the only other Lobos to make a three-pointer this year. * A Lobo has scored in the double digits on 48 different occasions. This includes 9 different Lobos scoring ten or more points in a game this season. * Junior Sara Halasz continues her play as a stat sheet stuffer after her six-point, six-rebound and five-assist outing in the victory over Boise State. She continues to do a little bit of everything for the Lobos and is currently fifth on the team in scoring, third in rebounding, second in assists and fifth in steals. * Coach Sanchez and company have missed the friendly confines of The Pit in Albuquerque. They re 8-2 at home and 1-5 on the road this season, which includes their current four-game road losing streak. * You know an arena is special when six letters is all one needs to identify it. The Pit is nationally recognized as one of the top basketball venues. Need more evidence? How about Sports Illustrated ranking it as one of the top 20 sporting venues, of any sport, in the world for the 20th century. The Pit is truly a special place, and it has created an unparalleled environment for the New Mexico women s basketball program. The Lobos have led the Mountain West in attendance every year of the conference s existence since the 1999-2000 season. During that same timespan, the program has ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance in each of those years. * The women s basketball program at the University of New Mexico held its inaugural season back in 1974-75. Despite the program taking a hiatus from 1987-1991, the Lobos have played 976 games in the program s history. Its 1,000th game will be played on February 16, 2013 at Boise State University. * New Mexico Women s Basketball continues to be recognized as one of the premier programs in the national academically. The Women s Basketball Coaches Association ranks the top 25 programs based on grade point averages. Since the 2004-05 season, the Lobos have made the WBCA s Academic Top 25 seven times. * Caroline Durbin has been named a candidate for the 2012-13 Senior CLASS award. She is one of 30 NCAA Division I women s basketball players to receive an official nomination. The award is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School. It focuses on the total student-athlete experience and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. She is UNM s first candidate since Amy Beggin in the 2009-10 season and is the only player from the Mountain West represented among the nominees. The candidates will be narrowed down to ten finalists mid-season before this year s award winner is announced during the NCAA Women s Final Four in New Orleans in early April. * Don t forget!
