Last season, Hendrix led the Lady Tigers with 12.6 points per game, which ranked eighth in the MEAC, shooting.351 (123-for-350) from the floor. The Carrollton, Ga., native set a school-record in the Division I era with 62 made 3-point field goals made in a season with a shooting percentage of.332 (62-for-187), which ranked eighth in the conference and third in the MEAC with 2.2 made 3-pointers per game. In conference play, Hendrix ranked sixth in the MEAC with 14.1 points per game, fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (35.6) and led the conference with 2.3 made 3-pointers per game. Coming into the 2016-17 season, Hendrix ranks second in school history with 143 made 3-pointers, 10 off of first place and sixth in points with 883 and seventh with 313 made field goals in her career. Last season, Davis led the Lady Tigers with 2.7 blocks per set, which ranked third in the MEAC and 24th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and with 8.5 rebounds per game, which ranked third in the conference. In conference play, Davis led the conference with 9.9 rebounds per game, second in field goal percentage (56.3) and third with 2.9 blocks per set. Coming into the 2016-17 season, The Athens, Ga., native is the career rebounding leader in school history with 718 in the Division I era. She also ranks eighth in field goals made with 300 and 10th in scoring with 677 points in her career. Savannah State was picked to come in eighth in the preseason MEAC poll with two first place votes. The Lady Tigers finished tied for eighth with a 7-9 conference record last season and enter the conference tournament as the No. 8 seed. SSU fell to South Carolina State in overtime to end its season. Schedule Breakdown-----------------------------> Savannah State faces a variety of nonconference opponents this year. They will play a total of two SEC schools with hosting South Carolina before Christmas in Tiger Arena. The Lady Tigers will also face opponents from the SWAC, Big 12, Big South, Sun Belt, Atlantic Sun, Ohio Valley and Pac-12 before opening the MEAC schedule in January. Tough 2016-17 Schedule-----------------------------> The Lady Tigers face their toughest schedule with seven teams that made the NCAA Tournament (Seton Hall, Alabama State, Jacksonville, Auburn, Washington, South Carolina and North Carolina A&T State). SSU also plays a five-game stretch of teams that made the postseason last season with three that made the NCAA Tournament (Auburn, Washington, South Carolina) and two that made the NIT Tournament (Florida Gulf Coast and Bethune-Cookman). Last Three Seasons-----------------------------------------------------> Over the past three-plus seasons, the Lady Tigers have posted a 56-57 (.496) overall record and a 34-22 (.607) MEAC record. Last season, SSU posted a 10-18 overall record and a 7-9 MEAC record, while the 2014-15 squad went 21-11 overall record and a 13-3 MEAC record and in 2013-14, SSU posted a 19-14 overall record and a 10-6 record. TEAM NOTES Hendrix Named College Sports Madness MEAC Player of the Week (1/23) Senior guard Kenyata Hendrix averaged 14.0 points per game, 6.0 rebounds per game, and 4.5 assists per game in two wins last week. The Carrollton, Ga., native recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in a 60-49 win at South Carolina State with two assists and recorded 18 points and a career-high seven assists in a 66-62 overtime win against Morgan State in Tiger Arena. Davis Named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week (1/16) Senior center Tiyonda Davis was named the Co-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week (1/16) for the third time this season. Davis recorded 20 rebounds and 11 blocks in the last two games of the week at Norfolk State and against Florida A&M. In three games, Davis averaged 8.3 rebounds per game, 4.0 blocks per game, 0.7 steals per game and 3.0 poitns per game. The Athens, Ga., native recorded 14 rebounds and five blocks with two steals and six points at NSU and six rebounds and six blocks vs. FAMU. She also recorded eight rebounds, six points and a block at Hampton. Single Season Watch (Division I era) - Blocks Senior cneter Tiyonda Davis recorded three blocks in a 64-57 win against Delaware State (1/23) to give her 63 blocks this season, which moves her into fifth most in school history in a single season in the Division I era. The Athens, Ga., native needs two blocks to move into fourth place of 67 blocks, which Davis set in her sophomore season. Coaching the Lady Tigers Savannah State Cedric Baker Cedric Baker enters his 14th season as head women s basketball coach at Savannah State University and enters his 24th year of head coaching. He was named head coach at Savannah State on July 30, 2003. Since coming to Savannah State, Baker has gradually improved the women s basketball program. Last season, however, the Lady Tigers went 10-18 overall and 7-9 in conference play and fell to South Carolina State in the first round of the MEAC Tournament. In the 2014-15 season, SSU went 21-11 overall and 13-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference; all records were the best in the program s Division I era (since 2002-03) and the best MEAC record since its first year of competition in 2011-12. The Lady Tigers won the 2015 MEAC Tournament Championship for the first time in school history and received its first bid into the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament. In the 2013-14 season SSU went 19-14 overall, 10-6 in the MEAC, and 10-2 in Tiger Arena; all records were the best in the program s Division I era (since 2002-03). It was also the best MEAC record the programs had since its first year of competition in 2011-12. The Lady Tigers under Baker made history in the 2014 MEAC Tournament with wins over Morgan State and Florida A&M. They were the first basketball team in the school s history to make the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament. Prior to that, the 2006-07 team earned a spot on the Division I most improved list, compiled by the NCAA, with a 7.5 game improvement. Their winning percentage also increased to.413 in 2006-07 from.142 in 2005-06. The team earned a.577 winning percentage in 2010-11. During his tenure at Savannah State University, Baker has helped guide the Lady Tigers to some of the most significant wins in the history of the program. Those wins came against opponents from various Division I conferences, including: University of Florida (Southeastern Conference), The University of Texas San Antonio (Conference USA), Troy (Sun Belt), Charleston Southern (Big South), Longwood (Big South), East Carolina (Conference USA), Louisiana-Lafayette (Sun-Belt), Georgia Southern (Southern Conference), Tennessee St. (OVC), and Mercer (Atlantic Sun). Baker has also proved successful in the HBCU arena, recording wins over Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman, Maryland Eastern Shore, Howard, Florida A&M, Norfolk State, Delaware State, North Carolina Central, South Carolina State, Morgan State, and SIAC champion Fort Valley State. In the 2013-14 season, Baker eclipsed 300 career wins and broke 100 Savannah State NCAA Division I wins, etching himself into the record books with the most NCAA Division I wins (132) in school history. Baker comes to SSU from Benedict College where he served as head women s basketball coach and guided the program to a 55-29 overall record during his tenure. In 2003, his team finished third in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Eastern Division with a 19-9 record. He led the team to back-to-back Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (EIAC) championships in 2001 and 2002, and was named EIAC Coach of the Year in 2002. Prior to his coaching position at Benedict, He served as head coach of the Voorhees College women s basketball team where he compiled a 139-86 record during his seven years at the program s helm. His team earned four EIAC championships and three NAIA Division I National tournament appearances. In 2000, his team compiled a record of 24-4, earning him an at-large berth into the NAIA Division I basketball tournament. The team was ranked number 16 in the NAIA Division I top 25 final poll and was the EIAC conference champions with a record of 12-0. Baker graduated from Voorhees College in 1990, earning a bachelor s degree in mathematics and applied sciences.
