PREVIEWING OKLAHOMA The Sooners were picked by the league s coaches to finish fifth in the strong Big 12 Conference this season. However, the media has Oklahoma 13th in the Preseason Associated Press Poll trailing only Big 12 foes Baylor and Texas. The ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll have Oklahoma at No. 8. The Sooners enter 2009-10 following one of its best seasons in history. Oklahoma notched a program record 32 wins, won its sixth Big 12 regular season title and made its second trip to the Final Four. OU returns eight letterwinners from the squad, including three starters. Preseason Wooden Award candidate Danielle Robinson, the returning Big 12 Freshman of the Year Whitney Hand and senior co-captain Amanda Thompson will lead the charge. Team Votes Captains for 2009-10 Sophomore Whitney Hand and senior Amanda Thompson, for a third year, are co-captains of the Sooners this season. The captains were voted by their teammates. Hand and Thompson have developed a reputation as tireless workers and persevering through painful injuries. The two were greatly responsible for organizing involuntary workout and pick-up games in the summer. Robinson Leads USA to Gold Danielle Robinson earned her first gold medal as part of USA Basketball as she led her team to a World University Games Gold Medal this summer. The USA went 7-0 in the World University Games held in Belgrade, Serbia in June. Robinson made four starts at point guard, including the championship game, and averaged 5.0 points and 3.1 assists. McFarland Leads Kansas to Border Win OU freshman Joanna McFarland scored a team-high 18 points and took MVP honors while leading Kansas to an 81-73 over Nebraska in an all-star border battle played June 20 as a fundraiser for the V Foundation. Kansas took control after falling behind 13-4 as McFarland sank one of her two 3-pointers that generated a five-minute scoring run in which her team took a 19-14 lead. Had six double-digit assist games last season for an OU single-season and career record... Robinson was perfect from the field (8-for-8) and had nine assists in OU s preseason scrimmage. 14 - Lauren Willis Expected to see rise in minutes with only 10 on roster... Older sisters Jessica (Kansas State) and Jackie (Colorado) set the trend... Has shown atypical range for her size and position. PREVIEWING Georgia With a roster featuring more active newcomers (six) than returning letterwinners (five), the Lady Bulldogs are very much a work in progress. We re not ready for a game but this should tell some things, head coach Andy Landers said. By no means are we ready to play a game. We ve had too many many people miss too many practices, and we have a lot of young people. Returning letterwinners Angel Robinson (knee), Porsha Phillips (illness) and Jaleesa Rhoden (hamstring) have been limited at times during the pre-season, while freshman Jasmine James missed a good portion of the workouts with a bone bruise. Those setbacks were compounded by the fact that returning starter Christy Marshall suffered a season-ending knee injury two days before the official opening of practice. Oklahoma Fifth in Big 12 Vote Oklahoma was selected to finish fifth in the Big 12 Conference in a crowded race at the top of the coaches preseason poll. The Sooners are the defending Big 12 Champions. Coaches were not allowed to rank their own team. Baylor was picked the preseason favorite to win the regular season title with five first-place votes. Kansas and Texas tied for second, each with three first-place votes, three points behind Baylor. Texas A&M had one first-place vote and was fourth, one vote ahead of the Sooners. Nebraska was sixth, Iowa State seventh, Kansas State eighth, Oklahoma State ninth, Texas Tech 10th, Colorado 11th and Missouri 12th. G a m e N o t e s 4 Caton Hill Deploys Caton Hill built a reputation as a hard-nosed player for Oklahoma, a rugged rebounder who played in a school-record 140 games. Her coach calls her a player who defines the Sooners program. Hill, now a U.S. Army captain, said Wednesday that lessons learned from her basketball career should help her deal with challenges she might face while on combat duty in Afghanistan. She leaves for a one-year deployment on Friday - and she s nervous. It will be a great experience, but it s still scary, said Hill, who is from Ada. You have to respect the situation.... It s not like I m going out and doing a lot of risky business, but I m still there (in Afghanistan) and I m a flight surgeon. There is some anxiety, but a lot of stuff you can t control, so I focus on what I can control. Hill said she will serve as a flight doctor for the Army s 3rd Infantry Division, Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment - also known as the Task Force Brawlers - primarily working with helicopter pilots on the front lines. Hill, a 6-foot-1 forward, played for the Sooners from 1999 to 2004 and is sixth on Oklahoma s career scoring list with 1,653 points. She twice earned All- Big 12 Conference honors from coaches and started for Oklahoma s 2002 national runner-up squad. She was a relentless competitor on the basketball floor, a do all the dirty jobs kind of post/power forward, Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale said. She was never the biggest or the fastest, and I used to joke that you could put a couple of pieces of paper under her feet when she jumped. But she found a way to get the job done - whatever it was you asked her to do. After graduating from Oklahoma, Hill decided to enter the university s medical school. She also decided to join the Army Medical Corps, with the Army paying her medical school bills in exchange for her service. It was a decision influenced by the fact her father, Howard Hill, and uncle, John Binkley, both served in the Army. Her brother, Andrew Hill, also is in the Army. Caton Hill said she grew up at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas and that she s always been around the military, so she understood its culture. I wanted to join because I think... going and taking care of people who are fighting for you is one of the most honorable things to do, she told reporters in a conference call from Georgia. ----------------------------------- Fans may send messages to Caton Hill via e-mail at CPTCatonHill@gmail.com. Last Time vs. Georgia While Courtney Paris was breaking another rebounding record, Amanda Thompson tied her career-high with 18 points and also had two late blocks to help the Sooners seal a 65-57 win. Paris had 18 points and 14 boards, setting the Big 12 rebounding record en route to her 78th consecutive doubledouble. The Bulldogs made a late charge at Oklahoma after trailing by 10 at halftime, but still lost for the fourth time in their last seven games after a 13-0 start. Paris and her twin sister, Ashley, were able to keep Georgia s inside tandem of Tasha Humphrey and Angel Robinson in check for much of the game. Robinson left early in the first half after picking up two fouls, and wasn t a factor in the second half. Humphrey struggled to a 3-for-16 shooting performance, including 0-for-6 from 3-point range, and scored 11 points. Christy Marshall added 16 points, one off her career best, and Megan Darrah also scored 11. Ashley Paris added 14 points and Danielle Robinson scored 12 for Oklahoma.
