In all, 334 teams compete in Division I women s basketball. In five of its 12 conference losses, Nicholls was within a basket of tying or taking the lead late in the ball game. Against Louisiana-Monroe, Southeastern Louisiana and Lamar, the Lady Colonels possessed doubledigit leads at one point or another. The only game that saw Nicholls falling behind by a large margin came against Stephen F. Austin and Texas-Arlington. The Lady Colonels will look to sweep Texas State this evening after beating them at home, 52-50, earlier this season. Despite mounting a furious comeback against Louisiana-Monroe, the Lady Colonels came up short. In two of its last four games, Nicholls has rallied from 20 points down to make its contests interesting. 2005-06 Nicholls Schedule and Results (4-22 Overall, 3-12 SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE) Date Opponent... Along with leading his squad to three-straight NAIA National Tournament appearances, Cook was named Gulf Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2001 after his team advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NAIA National Tournament. Double Trouble The Lady Colonels have one of the best backcourt tandems in the SLC with the return of Katherine Plummer and Jamie Octave. Both players received All-SLC honorable mention honors last season after stellar campaigns that saw each averaging nine plus points per game. Currently Octave is averaging 14.7 points per game, while Plummer is pouring in 11.2 per contest. Additionally, Octave ranks fifth in the conference in scoring, while Plummer is third in the SLC in assists. Youth Is Served- Nicholls women s team includes eight freshmen and no seniors. Only two players have more than one year of experience and they are Octave and Claire Barry. I Know You- Current sophomore point guard Katherine Plummer attended the same high school as walk-on guard Melissa Blaise. Both players are from Brooklyn, N.Y, and went to Sheepshead. What A Second Half...After heading into halftime trailing, 34-25, the Lady Colonels offense came to life in the second half against Stephen F. Austin earlier this season. Not only did they score a season-high 43 points, but they shot 55.6 percent from the field. Staying in Touch SID/Women s Basketball Contact:... Thad Angelloz Angelloz s Office Phone:... Noting the Lady Colonels... Spreading the Air Out This season Nicholls women s basketball can be heard on KBZE 105.9 FM-Morgan City. Seth Thomas, KBZE s Sports Director, will handle play-byplay duties for the Lady Colonels. The broadcasting veteran has experience on both the high school and collegiate level. Thomas will be on the air 15 minutes prior to evening s games he broadcasts. Making Strides- Junior walk-on guard Claire Barry continues to shine in the staring lineup. She now ranks third in the team in scoring, as she is averaging 6.7 points per contest.. Well-Represented Nicholls enters this season with players hailing from New York, Washington State, California, Texas, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Canada. Louisiana is the most popular state with six while Texas and New York have two each. No Place Like Home- The Lady Colonels started their fall practice season away from Stopher Gym. Due to floor damage suffered during Hurricane Katrina and displaced residents being housed in the gym for two months, Nicholls was forced to practice at local high schools. However, a portable surface was placed over the damaged floor just in time for Nicholls first home game on Dec. 21. Make It Count-Junior guard Claire Barry Kelli Brasher shined brightly against Louisiana-Monroe after scoring a career-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting with four assists and four rebounds. 2006 Southland Conference Standings Through Feb. 28 SLC Games All Games Team W L Pct.
