Red Stick Fly Fishers (RSFF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of fly fishing, conservation and outdoor ethics. Programs are held the second Monday of each month at our Temporary Meeting Location: Louisiana Resource Center for Education (LRCE) 225-924-7600, 7-9 PM Located in the old Louisiana Office Supply at 5550 Florida Blvd. Adjacent to the 14 story white building formerly known as Republic Tower. The side street is Cloud Drive. Parking and entrance is behind the building. As a landmark, Fleur-De-Lis Pizza is on the corner of Cloud Drive and Government Street. Fly tying is held the fourth Monday of each month, except December. The location currently alternates between Orvis, Cabela s in Gonzales and Bass Pro Shop in Denham Springs. These events also begin at 7:00 pm. Dues are $25 for individuals or families, free for students. RSFF is affiliated with the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) Gulf Coast Council. Submissions to The Red Letter must be received by the Editor no later than the first Monday of each month. May 13 Program - Nick Ross, San Juan Angler Fly Shop Nick was born and raised in Pueblo, CO and grew up fly fishing the Arkansas, South Platte, and various other Southern Colorado high desert creeks and high elevation lakes. He works for the San Juan Angler Fly Shop in Durango, CO and has guided on the San Juan River and other local waters in his home state of Colorado, as well as in Montana and even Alaska. So what does a guy like Nick do for fun, you might ask? When the tension gets too high and he needs to get away from it all, he just takes a vacation in saltier climates such as in Belize or the Florida Keys where permit are his favorite fly rod quarry. Please join us as he shares his greatest adventures and the highlights of his enviable career on Monday, May 13. Our featured tier will be Jeff Denig who will demonstrate the Fat Head Minnow. The Fat Head Minnow is a surface to thin water fly designed to push a lot of water and elicit strikes not unlike a Zara Spook or Floating Fat Head Corky Minnow. Tier s that have Flexament or UV Cure Soft Liquid are encouraged to bring them as they are an integral part of the fly.
Orvis offering Free Fly Fishing 101, 201 Clinics Our club sponsors at Orvis - Baton Rouge are offering FREE Fly Fishing 101 and Fly Fishing 201 clinics on selected Saturdays during the months of April, May, and part of June. No fee, but registration is required. To register, contact Alex Beane (225) 757-7286. The Fly Fishing 101 course is a one day, 2 hour clinic designed to introduce the basics of fly fishing and fly casting. It will consist of two parts - one hour of casting instruction and one hour of rigging. Other basics will be discussed. And in addition, once instruction is completed, each attendee will receive in-store savings on purchase of Orvis products. Additionally, each group attendee will receive a certificate for a FREE Trout Unlimited membership and a FREE membership to the Federation of Fly Fishers a $70 value. Dates for the 101 course are April 20, April 27, May 4, May 18, May 25, June 8. The Fly Fishing 201 course is conducted on the water, with a lower instructor/student ratio. The main thrust of the 201 course is getting those interested in taking the next step in fly fishing on the water at a local location where they will get real life experience in applying fly fishing basics to catching fish. Dates for the 201 course are June 1 and June 15. RSFF to participate in Orvis Days May 4th Come to Orvis in Perkins-Rowe on Saturday, May 4, 2013, and enjoy a host of activities. Our club will be tying flies and talking about local fishing opportunities. Also, new local Orvis-endorsed guide Lucas Brissett will be doing a presentation on fly fishing for reds in the Louisiana marsh, as well as tying some of his favorite redfish patterns. Also on the agenda are Blake LeBlanc with Wildlife and Fisheries who will talk about the state's voluntary Catch and Release Tagging program, Bob Boese of Lafayette and Acadiana Fly Rodders will tie his favorite Bass Flies, and Coaltion to Restore Coastal Louisiana will be on hand to discuss marsh restoration, mangrove plantings and other great activities to save our marsh. Natchitoches Fishing Expo on May 4th Anyone looking for a change of scenery the weekend of Saturday, May 4, then hilly Natchitoches is the place to be for great freshwater fishing opportunities, and to take in the 1st-ever "Natchitoches Fishing Expo" sponsored by our friends with Cane Country Fly Casters club. Held at the Prather Coliseum and Pond on the campus of Northwestern State University, the time is 8:30am to 5:00pm. This event features both conventional and fly fishing, and also has special activities for the Ladies including cooking class and artistry (require registration). There'll be 35+ fly tiers and 35+ vendors on hand. There's also kayak demos by Pack and Paddle. Speakers include bass pro Judy Wong, fly fishing expert Pete Cooper, kayak fishing by Catch Cormier, fly casting by Keith Richards and Bob Tabbert, crappie fishing by pro Denis North and much more.
