Off the Beach News Sail Training News We finally had favourable weather for our Sunday morning program last Sunday and it was great to see everybody out on the water. Our Tackers course kicked off, the Development Squad had some starts practice and there were six potential new members that had a ride in a Pacer with Tori. The women s keelboat training continued with Billy on Calypso helping out Clarky and Sue. This course has been so popular we are looking at scheduling another one to start in the new year. Our Sail Training program now has four sections: Discover Sailing which is where people who have never sailed can come down to the club any Sunday at 10am and get taken out for a sail. If you have friends or family who are interested in sailing tell them to get on down! Learn To Sail Courses, of which there will be two kids and one adult dinghy course as well as the keelboat program. These are intended to get newcomers from absolute novice to being able to sail a basic course. Once people can actually skipper a boat themselves they can join the Development Squad, which is open to sailors of any age who would like to improve their skills on a Sunday morning and test them out in the afternoon racing. Our development squad this year is being run by Glenn and Ross who happily give up their Sunday mornings to run it. The training provided would normally cost you $30 a session through coaching programs but it is FREE for members. The training will include fun activities to mix it up such as teams racing and adventure sails. Keelboat Training Programs (like Sue and Clarky s learn to sail course for women) are in development but the demand is potentially huge! If anybody has keelboat instructor qualifications and would like to help out please contact Ewan. The goal of our sail training program is NOT to make money for the club but rather to attract new active sailing members to the club and to get our existing members to enjoy their sailing more by being more confident of their skills on the water. After all, school is important but sailing is importanter!

MINUTES OF THE SKIPPERS AND CREWS MEETING Sunday 13 th November 2016 Chairman Club Captain, Clarky. Meeting commenced at 10.00am General Business Sail Peninsula Notice of Race Brochure was discussed and a draft copy passed to all present. General comment was that it was an excellent promotion and that it should be a great regatta. It was also said that it should lift the whole profile of the Club. It will need the support of all members to make it a great success. David Donaldson raised the question of the Race Start Line. The racing fleet is steadily getting larger and perhaps the start line should be moved. The subject was discussed: o o o o o o Where to put a new start line using buoys. What would the costs be. A start boat and other buoys may be needed. A larger start boat would be needed very expensive. Members to crew. Tower may be redundant. Clarky responded that there would be no changes either this season or next season, but he would put these concerns to the Keel Boat Sailing Committee. Handicapping. There has been considerable discussion about handicaps over recent months. The Club has decided that the following procedures be put in place: Peter Bulka will be the Handicap Officer. Ewan will work with Peter to revise the Top Yacht Handicap System. The revised handicaps will be approved by Clarky, who will arrange the database changes. This is necessary as many new boats are joining the club and they require both PHD and AMS handicaps. Any revision of handicaps or introduction of new boats and their handicaps will be processed once a week, with the information to be submitted by the end of each Thursday, otherwise it will not be included in the following weekend s racing handicaps results. All new boats will have a 3 minute, or 003 handicap added to an existing handicap. Women s Sailing Course Clarky (the Club Captain) is conducting a very successful women s sailing course. It is so successful it may be necessary to have a men s sailing course in the near future. The current women s course is full. Any interested parties should speak to Clarky about details. Martha Cove Marina Activities The Club is in discussion with Martha Cove Marina and the news is: Mast up facilities will be provided. Wash down facilities will be provided.
Travel lift, antifouling and repair facilities will be in place. These facilities should start construction in early 2017. Cat 5 and Insurance Certificates These certificates must be in place NOW. Random audits will be carried out in January be prepared. These are consequences for noncompliance with Australian Yachting and SBSC. Man overboard instruction will be provided in January. Your S.T.S. operating system must be in place. Rules of Racing Course This is an important course for skippers and crew who feel the need to improve their knowledge of these rules, some of which have been updated. Friday Night Social Sailing. A club member made the following comments: Can the Club consider a less serious race for those boat owners and families who race less seriously. The general response was a race is a race is a race and serious for some and they want to keep it as that. Other thoughts were that less serious boats allow others through. This is to be considered by the committee, as boat owners are reluctant to join in on Fridays because of this. The meeting closed at 11.00 am. Information about this course will be advised. Christmas Period Club Racing. The Race Committee will be reviewing racing during this period and will advise members of outcomes. Race Abandonment There will be no racing if a gale warning is issued by the B.O.M. A notice of 2 hrs is required to abandon a race. The Race Committee and Club Captain will decide if an abandonment is required. Club indemnity and insurance requirements make this call mandatory.
