Russell Roberts with driver Ted Demmler after one of Pure Steel's Hunter Cup wins Vale Russell Roberts Article by Alan Parker Former leading owner Russell Roberts who passed away following a battle with cancer on December 23rd. Russell Walter Roberts was born on 5th July 1933 although strangely his birth notice in The West Australian that week read On July 5th, at Miss Harvey s Private Hospital, Bulwer Street, Perth, to Mr and Mrs F C Roberts, Gingin a son (Russell Frank) both well. Russell s father was Frank Roberts and one can only surmise that between the time of the notice in the newspaper and registration of the birth that his wife had a say in the name of their son. Russell s mother was Agnes Clark before her marriage and her uncle Walter Clark was a leading owner and breeder of Standardbreds. He was better known as Watty Clark and he bred more than 300 trotting winners in WA including four WA Derby winners in Jack Oro, Bobbie Oro, Happy Mint and King Aflame. He also bred the fourth dam of Norms Daughter and one of the great pacers of the sixties in Mercedes Young Russell Roberts was a student at Perth Modern School where one of his classmates was Phil Coulson who was just three months older than Russell. 2 February - RACING AHEAD HARNESS Russell excelled at most sports and in his teenage years he became a top-flight cyclist at a time when professional cycling was a big sport in Perth. Russell, and his older brothers John and Roy, were all members of the State s strongest club the Midland Junction Cycle Club and all excelled. It is worth noting that prizemoney at the annual Labour Day Sports Carnival in Northam in 1951 was in excess of 1000 and Russell was a regular winner at the carnival both as a junior and senior rider. In addition to the prizemoney there were always bookmakers present which one suspects may have interested Russell more than the actual prizemoney he always liked a bet. Russell Roberts also learned to box courtesy of his father who was somewhat horrified when he found out that Russell was about to enter the ring in a fight his father had taught him to box purely as a means of self-defence. He started out his working life with trucks and a sandpit and then began investing in a number of hotels and the stock-market where he got in on the ground floor of the Poseidon boom. While he was extremely successful as a businessman Russell s true

Vale Russell Roberts passion was horses whether as a bookmaker or as an owner and trainer. He began racing pacers in the late 1960s when his wife Shirley raced a horse called Belroy and then James Eden with Fred Kersley as trainer. James Eden won some 35 races and when Russell and Shirley went with James Eden to the 1973 Sydney Inter Dominion they decided to go to the Yearling Sales. It was a fateful decision as Roberts took an instant liking to a nuggetty colt that was to become the country s best pacer and spent just $2400 to buy him. Some years later Roberts recalled the day vividly. I liked his pedigree as at the time the Adios stallions were all the go and this colt was a grandson of an Inter Dominion winner. He was also very athletic and caught the eye, he said in an interview for the 2007 WA Racing Hall of Fame. Named Pure Steel after his first choice of name, Toledo, was rejected the son of Toledo Hanover won 68 races and $915,302 with 11 Group One races including four WA Pacing Cups, three AG Hunter Cups, South Australian Cup, Fremantle Cup and Miracle Mile. Including Pure Steel, Russell Roberts raced the winners of some 313 races between 1970 and 1998 including the 1982 Inter Dominion winner Rhett s Law and the 1973 WA Pacing Cup winner Local Product. As a WA Turf Club bookmaker Russell Roberts liked a punt in fact one could say he loved a punt. In 1976 he went within a whisker of sending half the country s bookmakers to the wall when a massive plunge on Pure Steel just missed when the horse finished second to Carclew in that year s Inter Dominion Final in Adelaide. Not deterred, later that same year Russell decided to have another go as he masterminded a successful plunge with Pure Steel in that year s Kilmore Cup. He was somewhat peeved that Pure Steel had to share the backmark with established stars Don t Retreat and Paleface Adios but Russell wasn t deterred. He decided the best way to get better odds that the 4/1 on offer early was by utilising little known 18yo Victorian driver Steven Shinn and then added some plain old smart thinking. Russell wasn t allowed to hold a trainer s licence in either code due to his being a bookmaker but make no mistake he was Pure Steel s trainer. He took advantage of Pure Steels habit of only doing just enough to win and put him in a trial with some pretty average horses a week before the Kilmore Cup. The heavy bandages on the horse s legs were all part of the plan as to casual onlookers Steelo apparently laboured to win the trial. Steven Shinn got off the horse after the trial and declared he couldn t win the Cup and rumours spread that the horse was lame and the price got out to 10/1. The stable then moved and he firmed right in and eventually started a warm favourite. The plan nearly back-fired though when stewards called Roberts the day before the Cup and ordered an inspection which the horse easily passed there was nothing wrong with him. Shinn turned up on race day and came and saw Russell in disbelief that the horse had been plunged. Russell just told Shinn to drive him like I tell you and he will win and if you don t I will kick your backside so hard you won t sit down for a week. Shinn went away and came back five minutes later and asked Russell to have a thousand on Steelo for him. With 59 bookmakers on course it wasn t hard to get the extra money on. Shinn drove Pure Steel exactly as instructed and although he didn t really need a crack with the whip, Roberts understood the pressure on the 18yo with the driver s own money at stake. Apart from Pure Steel other good winners that raced in Russell Roberts name included Local Product (19 wins including WA Pacing Cup, Mount Eden Sprint and Inter Dominion heat), Ex Adios (17 wins), Desert Patrol (16 wins), Rhett s Law (15 wins), Rummin (15 wins) and Spangle Black (12 wins including WA Oaks). The win of Rhett s Law in the 1982 Perth Inter Dominion final is one of racing s great ironies in that Rhett s Law had a heart score of 98 which is very low. Pure Steel, with a heart score of 154, was clearly the best pacer in Australia for five successive seasons and he never won an Inter Dominion. He also raced a number of classy gallopers including Kingston Town Classic winner True Steel along with the likes of Common Touch and Sir Tinka. Sir Tinka was runner-up in a Railway Stakes for Roberts. Russell loved his horses and the precious hours that he spent with them and he loved the thrill and adrenalin rush that a win brought with it. He wasn t overly concerned with the rules not allowing him to be officially recognised as a trainer with a truly remarkable record although, some years later, he did confess that he would have loved to have driven Pure Steel in a race. One suspects that part of the motivation for that would have been the price on offer. Sincere sympathies are extended to all members of the Roberts family on their loss in particular Russell Roberts children Russell Jnr, Montana, Sandy and Mark. RACING AHEAD HARNESS - February 3

2018 APG Yearling Sales Article by Wayne Currall More than 600 standardbreds will go to auction over the next couple of months as part of the Australian-wide Ladbrokes Australian Pacing Gold (APG) Yearling Sales. The Perth leg of the sales will be held at Belmont Park racecourse at 1pm on Sunday, March 4 with 107 yearlings going under the hammer. And there s a host of well-bred youngsters among the lots. Lots 502 and 547 are by the world champion sire Bettors Delight and are sure to attract plenty of attention from prospective buyers. Bettors Delight has been the leading sire in Western Australia for the past five seasons and his dominance on the breeding scene was obvious during last year s Inter Dominion Final when his sons - Lazarus, Chicago Bull and Tiger Tara - landed the trifecta in the rich final. His sons also made up the bulk of the fields in the recently run Group 1 features, the $300,000 Fremantle Pacing Cup and the $450,000 WA Pacing Cup. During the 2016/17 season the progeny of Bettors Delight won 297 races in WA and finished in the placings on 463 occasions for more than $3,721,000 in stakes. Both of Bettors Delight s lots are fillies, with Lot 502 being a half brother to 2017 WA Derby winner Handsandwheels. She is being offered for sale by Mike Howie s Copper Lodge establishment. Lot 547 is also consigned by Copper Lodge and is the first foal of the well-credentialed Maddy White (11 wins and $110,824 in stakes), who is a half-sister to Handsandwheels. Another well-performed sire in Art Major will be represented by six lots at the sale and his progeny are also sure to be in demand. Art Major has been among the top three sires in WA for the past four seasons and his three fillies and three colts are sure to demand attention. Lot 543, an Art Major-Lil Blue Eyes filly, is from the same family as No Blue Manna, Back In The Black, Cott Beach, Sacre Bleu and Three Bears. Mark Sargent, of Yallingup, will present her for sale. WA Pacing Cup winner Soho Tribeca s sire American Ideal will be represented by two fillies, Lots 470 and 486. Lot 470 is out of Sienna, a half-sister to Australian 3YO Pacing Filly Of The Year Innocent Eyes ($421,875). She is being offered for sale by Tarsao Investemnts. Buyers will also have plenty of choices at the Perth sale with established sires Allamerican Ingot, Changeover, Courage Under Fire, Rich And Spoilt, Shadow Play, Somebeachsomewhere, Sportswriter, Tintin In America and Western Terror all with progeny up for sale. Then there s the new kids on the block in the west with A Rocknroll Dance, Alta Christiano, Follow The Stars, Hes Watching, Heston Blue Chip, Hurrikane Kingcole, Pet Rock, Renaissance Man, Shadyshark Hanover, Sunshine Beach and Sweet Lou all represented. Adda Equine Stud, who stand outstanding WA sire Rich And Spoilt, have 12 yearlings going under the hammer, Copper Lodge will present 10 yearlings, Steve Johnson, of Serpentine, will consign nine yearlings and KTC Bloodstock will be respresented by nine yearlings. KTC Bloodtsock are also acting as the agents for a further nine yearlings at the sale. And, of course, all graduates of the 2018 Ladbrokes APG Perth sale have the opportunity to pay up for either or both of the $1.8M Ladbrokes APG race series and the Perth Sale Classics. Generous Westbred bonus schemes also apply to horses foaled, registered and branded in WA. And a double Westbred bonus applies to horses foaled, registered and branded in WA and sired by a stallion registered and standing in WA at the time of service. It all makes for a wonderful time to get involved in the sport of harness racing. Who knows? Maybe you could pick up a horse like David Hercules ($1.26M), Lombo Navigator ($554,000), Adams Mate ($414,000) or Talladega ($411,000) - all graduates of previous APG sales. See you at Belmont Park racecourse at 1pm on Sunday, March 4. WASBA News 2017 IN REVIEW At the start of the year it s a good opportunity to reflect on the results of the previous year. The Inter Dominion series was certainly one of the best on record, with one of the finest fields ever gathered in the one place. Won by the phenomenal Lazarus (Bettors Delight), who emphasised that word with his superlative effort running second in the 2018 Fremantle Cup to millionaire My Hard Copy (American Ideal). Soho Tribeca (American Ideal) was also super in winning the WA Pacing Cup. Ultimate Machete (Bettors Delight) was dominant in the 4 year-old events, winning two of them including the Golden Nugget. All of these winners have prospective future stud careers. Ideal Alice (American Ideal) won the Mares Classic after just missing out on the two previous Group events for mares. During the last twelve months we have lost some exceptional sires including Somebeachsomewhere, Mach Three and Courage Under Fire. WA bred Vultan Tin (Dawn Ofa New Day) came of age during the Inter Dominion Championship and looks to be more than able to compete in top class. Americanbootscoota (Allamerican Ingot) had a fantastic year, winning over $90,000 and setting a lifetime best of 1:52.5. Aussie Delight (Bettors Delight) won the Binshaw Classic in a lifetime best. Three year old filly Maczaffair (Mach Three) won the WA Oaks and ran an excellent race to be second in the Golden Nugget. Sheer Rocknroll (Rocknroll Hanover) won the WASBA Breeders Stakes and the 4 and 5 year-old Westbred Mares Pace, which from this year will be called the Laurie Kennedy 4 and 5 year-old Westbred Mares Pace in honour of our former life member and Vice President, and life member and Content provided by WASBA Committee member of Gloucester Park. Natural Disaster (Shadow Play) ran a 26.6 last quarter to win the 4 and 5 year-old Kerry Clarke Westbred Pace. Brilliant 2yo filly Cott Beach (Advance Attack) excelled throughout the season, earning over $150,000, and on the east coast the WA bred but Victorian raced filly Nostra Villa (Art Major) won 8 out of 9 including the Breeders Crown. These two girls proved more than ever that we can breed a horse capable of running against the best in Australia. The Diamond Classic was won by WA bred filly Cimorene (Sportswriter) the 2 year-old Westbred Classic for the boys was won by Highroller Joe (Roll With Joe) and in a real fillip for WA breeders the WA Derby was won by Westbred Handsandwheels (Mach Three) who also won the 3 year-old Westbred Classic for colts and geldings. Sarah Goody (Rich And Spoilt) won some excellent races including the 3 year-old Westsired Classic, won over $90,000 and set a lifetime best of 1:54.3. Sportswriter filly Tenniele Erin and Shadow Play colt Play The Boys were excellent winners of the respective Sales Classics. In the WASBA sponsored races, wins were recorded by Alkiras Desire, Sea Me Smile and Ayana. Allamerican Queen (Allamerican Ingot) won the WASBA Country Oaks and went on to win the Westbred 3 year-old Fillies Classic. So it was another good year, with many, many more meritorious results than we could mention here. We would like to thank the clubs that supported WASBA and WA breeders in 2017, in particular Gloucester Park, Bunbury, Northam, Pinjarra, and Busselton. Congratulations to all owners, breeders and connections who have shown faith in the fillies or mares and WA breds in 2017. ANOTHER GREAT CATALOGUE FOR THE 2018 APG WA SALE Oodles of winners like Astra Villa, Allmightyjoelouis, Americanbootscoota, Red Hot Roxy, Doalittlerocknroll, The Real Ideal, New World Order, Dior Mia More, Bettors Reward, Bettor Bling, Play The Boys, all Sales graduates, should give you confidence to go to the WA Sale and buy a quality WA bred horse that will be competitive at all levels. Play The Boys maintained his 100% win record when he won on his return to racing earlier in the month. The 2018 WA Yearling Sale will be the second sale under the APG banner. Yearlings purchased at the sale will be eligible, if paid up, for the traditional $100,000 WA 2 year-old Sales Classics, $50,000 3 yearold WA Sales Classics and the lucrative APG national race series. The Sale of 110 lots has 35 different sires represented amongst the 51 colts and 59 fillies. Established sires such as Art Major (6 yearlings), the late, great Somebeachsomewhere (5), Bettors Delight (3), Rock N Roll Heaven (4) and American Ideal (2) are represented, to name just a few. A number of new highly credentialed sires are also available such as Sunshine Beach, Sweet Lou, Heston Blue Chip, Follow The Stars, Hes Watching and last season s first season sires Alta Christiano, Renaissance Man and Pet Rock. There are 23 lots that are West-sired and therefore eligible for the double Westbred Bonus. Yearlings by Allamerican Ingot (3), Follow The Stars (4), Lombo Mandingo (1), P Forty Seven (1), Parsons Den (1), Renaissance Man (7) and Rich And Spoilt (6). There is something for everyone here, and the Westbred Bonus and first win bonus makes these yearlings very attractive. New sires of 2 year-old s like Renaissance Man, Alto Christiano, Auckland Reactor, and US sire Pet Rock already have trial winners, as do Rich And Spoilt, Betterthancheddar, Bettors Delight, Changeover and Rocknroll Heaven. Sportwriter has the first race winner for the season. This years sale will be held on Sunday 4th of March at the Belmont Park Sales Complex, with the 2 year-old Sales Classic being run on the Friday night before the sale. Of the major breeders, Harry Capararo s, Adda Equine Stud will have 13 entrants, KTC Bloodstock and KTC Bloodstock as agent will have 19 yearlings for sale, Steve Johnson has 11, Mike Howie s Copper Lodge (breeder of the 2017 Derby winner) has 10 yearlings on offer. Whitbyfalls (Ed Dewar), Bill Hayes and Patrician Park (breeder of Breeders Crown winner Nostra Villa) have 6 each and Global Breeding Farms has 5 yearlings in the Sale. Many yearlings are by race performing mares and there is a number of new families represented in the sale. The catalogue can be viewed online at www.apgold.com.au if you don t have a catalogue, contact APG direct or WASBA and we will arrange for a catalogue to be sent to you. Kody Charles KTC BLOODSTOCK will hold their annual Yearling Sale Parade on Sunday 25 February. Check out Kody s facebook page for details. RACING AHEAD HARNESS - February 7

WASBA News NEW HARNESS RACING COMMITTEE Just in case you aren t aware of the new Harness Racing Committee (HRC), a sub-committee of the RWWA board. The Committee has been formed under Section 16 of the Racing and Wagering Western Australia Act 2003 to support the Harness Code Director in making recommendations on strategy, policy direction and planning for endorsement by the RWWA Board. The Committee should give the industry more input into the decision making processes that impact harness racing. The Thoroughbreds and Greyhounds have their own Committees. The successful nomination from the participant groups (WA Harness Racing Breeders, Owners, Trainers and Reinspersons Association, Harness Racing Owners Association of WA and the Western Australian Standardbred Breeders Association) is Howard King (the other Committee members endorsed by the RWWA Board are Michael Radley from GPHR and Peter Trefort for WACHRA). Many of you will know Howard through his association with WASBA and previously BOTRA. Howard has held the position of Vice President of WASBA since September 2014 and Treasurer of WASBA since 2011. He also held a Vice President position with BOTRA and positions on the Spider Fund Committee while on the BOTRA committee between 2011 and 2014. Howard has been an owner and breeder of Standardbreds for around 25 years after inheriting his first mare from his father Trevor. Trevor King bred and raced a number of horses in partnership including the Golden Slipper winner Pardon Me Boys, who was trained by the late Alan Lewis and driven by Chris Lewis. Howard s most successful horses to date have been the mares Sea Cider and Liberty Ann. Howard had a successful executive career with Wesfarmers within one of their many subsidiaries culminating in being the Chief Executive Officer at WFI, a predominately rural general insurance company, from 2003 to 2010. He is a Certified Practising Accountant and also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He currently Chairs LGIS, a Discretionary Mutual Trust owned by the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) which insures Local Councils. Howard is looking forward to the challenges of this committee role and with your assistance, providing input into the sustainability of Harness Racing. Howard remains as Vice President of WASBA and will continue to undertake WASBA initiatives as well as any work associated with the HRC. Any issues or concerns you raise with WASBA will be discussed by the WASBA Committee at our regular monthly Committee meetings which Howard attends. We welcome your thoughts on any topic to ensure we can put forward issues and initiatives to, and get real value from, the HRC. You can also contact Howard directly to raise any issues. The addition of two independent committee members will complete the membership of the HRC. WASBA THANKS OUR SPONSORS We sincerely thank our sponsors for their valuable support and assistance throughout the year. Our sponsors provide us with valuable funds to support you in your racing and breeding endeavours. WASBA provides over $10,000 per year to support races that support our WA bred horses and mares, as well as rugs, garlands, trophies for winners, annual breeding awards and substantial raffle and Tender opportunities. We also provide sponsorship to support Off The Track initiatives in support of our retired Standardbreds. Please support our sponsors Allwood Stud Farm, APG, Ramsays Horse Transport, Budget Stockfeeds, Gloucester Park Harness Racing, Landmark Midvale, Larkhill Vets, Milne Feeds, Pacing WA, Fresh Express and Vision Produce. We also had great support from Alabar Bloodstock and Woodlands Stud in our annual Stallion service raffle, and Alabar, Allwood, Cobbity Equine Farm, Empire Stallions, Woodlands and Yirribee Stud in our Stallion Tender, with Alabar, Cobbity and Yirribee providing discount service fees to our members. Our sponsors APG and Decron Horse Care are also sponsoring an award to the value of $1,000 for any WA bred (Westbred) that wins any of the open WA Group 1 races in the season. We are particularly appreciative for the support of David Boydell and Merv Butterworth for these award incentives. WASBA will provide a trophy in conjunction with the sponsorship provided by APG and Decron Horse Care. SNIPPETS The 2018 Golden Girls Classic for stakes of $30,000 is on Monday 26 March for M0 and better mares (preference to M1+). The 2018 WASBA Country Oaks for stakes of $25,000 will be run on 21 April at Bunbury. There is no restriction on driver. Don t forget the Westbred Bonus is paid for Westbreds placed 1ST to 4TH in all 2 and 3 year-old races worth less than $20,000, including Westbred only 2 and 3 year-old C and R class events and Country Council Derbies. Encourage your trainer to nominate for these events - trainers and drivers get a percentage of bonuses paid to the first three placegetters. We encourage you to join or re-join WASBA. If you have a filly or mare or are at all interested in her racing or breeding opportunities, or you are looking for opportunities for your Westbred, join WASBA and let us know your views. Go to the Members tab at www.wasba. com.au, or call 0447 053 040 for a form or we will complete a form for you. You can pay direct to the WASBA Westpac BSB 036 043, Account 129810, or pay by credit card or forward a cheque to WASBA at PO Box 1270, Booragoon WA 6954.
