They host Portland (4-9, 0-2) Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. and then take on Saint Mary s (8-5, 1-1) Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. for Family Day. There will be a free post game clinic for kids after the game. LAST TIME OUT: The USD women s basketball split their first two WCC games last week, earning a 60-54 win at San Francisco before falling at Pepperdine 66-62. In Thursday s win over the Dons, Aubrey Ward-El scored a season-high 24 points. Maya Hood chipped in 12 points, while Myah Pace and Sydney Williams added eight apiece. Ward-El and Hood led USD with nine rebounds and three steals apiece. The Toreros played well defensively, forcing 20 Dons (5-7, 0-1 WCC) turnovers and turning the extra possessions into 14 points. USD was held to 33 percent shooting on the night but connected on four-of-11 three-pointers and did well to get to the free-throw line, converting 12-of-16 free throws. The Toreros fell behind early as USF jumped out to an 11-4 lead to open the contest. USD went on an 11-4 run of its own to level the score at 15-15 with 1:11 to play in the first quarter. The Toreros found their rhythm in the second quarter and took a 36-26 point lead into halftime. USD led by as much as 12 points twice in the third quarter and took a comfortable 48-38 lead into the final stanza. However, the Dons rallied and cut the Toreros advantage to 53-49 with 4:26 to play. On Saturday at Pepperdine, Alexandria Young led the Toreros (8-5, 1-1 WCC) with 17 points, while Ward-El added 12 and Maya Hood chipped in 11. Trailing by three points with four seconds to play, Aubrey Ward-El got a decent look at a three-pointer but could not get it to fall. USD was held to 36.5 percent shooting on the day, including a 1-for-11 mark from three-point range. The Toreros also had some trouble from the free-throw line, going 15-for-24. USD played well defensively but could not slow down a Pepperdine offense that heated up in the final quarter to score 24 points. USD put up 19 points in the third quarter to take a 46-42 into the final quarter. However, the Toreros were outscored 24-16 in the final quarter and could not find the baskets needed down the stretch to prevent the Pepperdine comeback.

Freshmen Myah Pace (5-11, Oakland Calif.) and Sydney Hunter (6-0, Keizer, Ore.) will give the Toreros versatility on the perimeter. Freshman Kendall Bird (6-2, Buckley, Wash) and sophomore Kat Olczak (6-7, Zielona Gora, Poland), a transfer from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, will provide depth and toughness in the Toreros' frontcourt. THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT: The Toreros signed two players to NLI s during the early signing period on Wednesday, securing commitments from Kiera Oakry and Nicole Blakes. Oakry, a 5 10 guard from nearby La Jolla Country Day, is a three-time all-league selection and will bring athleticism and versatility to USD. Blakes is a 6 2 forward from Archbishop Mitty, a powerhouse in the Bay Area. She has helped her team go undefeated in league the past two seasons and will add speed, length and versatility to the Toreros post rotation. SCHEDULING UP: The Toreros 2017-18 schedule features ten games against teams who appeared in either the 2017 NCAA or WNIT postseason tournament. The Toreros play an extremely competitive nonconference schedule highlighted by games against San Diego State, California and Minnesota in addition to matchups against Boise State and Hawai i in Honolulu. This is one of the toughest non-conference schedules we have put together to date, Coach Fisher said. "It is going to challenge us from start to finish. PRESEASON POLL: The Toreros were picked to finish fourth in the WCC preseason poll. Gonzaga (26-7, 14-4) claimed 79 points to finish atop the preseason poll after claiming the double in 2017 with a WCC regular season and championship crown. Saint Mary's (20-13, 13-5) received the other two first place votes and was the preseason pick to finish second in the conference with 72 points. The Gaels were followed by BYU (20-12, 13-5) in third with 68 points. Behind the Toreros (54 points) was Loyola Marymount (14-16, 9-9), with 48 points. The Lions welcome a heralded transfer for the second consecutive season with junior Gabby Green eligible to compete following two years as a starter for California. Three points separated the sixth and seventh spots on the poll between a pair of teams with head coaches entering their second seasons with their respective programs. Santa Clara (14-16, 9-9) was selected sixth with 39 points while San Francisco (18-13, 11-7) was picked seventh with 36 points. Pacific claimed eighth overall with 28 points after going 10-21 (5-13) last season. Pepperdine and Portland round out the preseason poll with the Waves, under first-year head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones, collecting 14 points for ninth and the Pilots.

HEAD COACH CINDY FISHER Cindy Fisher was named the University of San Diego head women's basketball coach on April 19, 2005. Coach Fisher (13th season), has guided the Toreros to five 20-win seasons in the past six years. In that six-year span, USD has recorded a.697 win percentage (136-59), the second best amongst all division I schools in California, trailing only Stanford in this category. In her 11th season at the helm of the program, Fisher helped guide USD to its fifth consecutive 20-win season in 2015-16. Under her tutelage, USD posted the second most wins in program history at 25-8. The Toreros also made their fifth consecutive appearance in the Women's NIT, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the third time in program history. In her 10th year in charge of the Torero women's basketball program, Coach Fisher led USD to another 20-win season, as USD posted a 25-7 overall record, finished second in the WCC at 14-4 and made its fourth consecutive trip to the WNIT. USD managed to secure a pair of home postseason games, defeating Long Beach State in the first round, before losing to eventual WNIT champions UCLA in round two. Along the way, Fisher helped guide Sophia Ederaine to the WCC Defensive Player of the Year, as the senior forward led the nation in blocked shots with 152. This blocked shots mark also broke a 22-year old singleseason blocked shots record at USD. Ederaine was the first Torero to win the league's Defensive Player of the Year distinction. Under her tutelage, the senior class was able to graduate with an overall four-year mark of 97-25. In her ninth year at the helm of the Torero women's basketball program, Fisher helped lead USD to an overall record of 24-9, the second most wins in program history at the time, and reached the Sweet 16 round of the WNIT for the second time in three years. USD opened the season with a perfect 15-0 record, which led to the program's fist-ever national ranking of No. 24 in both the Associated Press and Coaches Poll. The 15-0 start was not only the best in program history, but for any athletic team at USD in the D-I era. The WNIT appearance marked the first time in program history that USD has made three consecutive postseason appearances. Under the watchful eye of head coach Cindy Fisher, the Toreros had three players take home All-WCC honors, highlighted by first-teamer Amy Kame. In her eighth season at the helm of the program in 2012-13, Cindy Fisher managed to do something no other coach in the history of the program had done before, the Toreros posted a second consecutive 20-win season. USD posted an overall record of 22-10, the second most wins in program history at the time, and reached the second round of the WNIT. USD also had a 12-4 mark in the WCC, good for second place in the West Coast Conference, and San Diego managed to reach the championship game of the WCC Tournament. This marked only the second time in program history that USD has made back-to-back postseason appearances, and both times have come under the watchful eye of Cindy Fisher. USD did all of this despite losing a pair of 1,000-point scorers, and the team's leading rebounder from the previous season's record-setting team. Under coach Fisher's tutelage, the Toreros produced the WCC Freshman of the Year in Maya Hood, and had three total players earn All-WCC honors, highlighted by first-teamer Amy Kame. The 2011-12 season was a historical one for the Toreros, as it is now the greatest season in program history. Under Fisher's tutelage, the Toreros soared to new heights,. USD posted a program best 26-9 overall record, posted a 12-4 mark in WCC play (the most wins in WCC play in program history) and they recorded the program's first ever postseason win. Not only was it the first ever postseason win, but the Toreros advanced all the way to the Final Four of the WNIT, before falling to the eventual WNIT champions, Oklahoma State. With Fisher's guidance, USD saw Dominique Conners become the program's all-time leading scorer, as well as earn first-team All-WCC honors along with Morgan Woodrow. Amy Kame take home All-WCC honorable mention accolades as well. In the 2010-11 season, Cindy Fisher had the team playing at its best basketball at the right time of year, as USD had an impressive run through the West Coast Conference Championships, winning two games in two days to advance to the semifinal game of the Championships against WCC-runner-up Saint Mary's. The Toreros then nearly pulled off of a third straight victory to make the championship game, but a last second shot fell just short, which ended USD's season. Under Cindy Fisher's tutelage, both Sam Child and Dominique Conners earned All-WCC accolades, and Sam Child was named to the All-WCC Tournament team. In her fifth season, Cindy Fisher once again had her team playing its best at the right time of the season, as the Toreros had an unprecedented run in the WCC championships, winning three games in three days to reach the championship game for the second time in as many years. The Toreros produced three players to the All-WCC team and Dominique Conners was the lone freshman named to the All-WCC Tournament team. In her third season at the helm of the program, she guided the Toreros back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in eight years. The 2007-08 season also marks backto-back postseason appearances for the Toreros under Fisher's watch. Fisher helped lead USD to a 19-12 overall record and a West Coast Conference Tournament championship. She helped guide three players to All-WCC honors, with Amanda Rego and Amber Sprague each earning firstteam honors and Sam Child being selected to the All-WCC freshman team. In only her second season at the helm of the program, Cindy Fisher orchestrated the biggest turn around in school history, a 12-game improvement from 9-19 in the 2005-06 season to a 21-9 record in 2006-07 season. The turnaround was the fourth best in the nation. USD set a lot of records along the way, including their first-ever 20-win season in program history,. Under her tutelage, the Toreros placed three players on the All-WCC lists highlighted by Amanda Rego being named the WCC Co-Player of the Year. Rego and Amber Sprague both took home first-team All-WCC honors and Morgan Henderson was named to the All- WCC Freshman team. For her efforts, Fisher was named the 2007 WCC Co-Coach of the Year. During her first season at USD, the Toreros showed remarkable improvement. The Toreros recorded a huge 15-point win over Santa Clara on the road and were close in games against Georgia Tech, Boise State and against Loyola Marymount in the first round of the WCC Championship Tournament. Before coming to USD, Fisher was the University of Nebraska's top assistant for two seasons, and the head coach for Wyoming between 1998-2003. She became USD's third head coach dating back to the program's inception in 1978-79. She took over for Kathy Marpe, who stepped down after directing the program for 25 years. Fisher helped lead Nebraska to back-to-back appearances in the WNIT during her two seasons with the Huskers. In 2004-05, the team finished 18-14 overall and 8-8 in the Big 12. The Huskers recorded the program's first win over a top-5 team with its 103-99 victory over eventual NCAA National Champion, Baylor, in January of 2005. They also posted Big 12 wins over No. 14 Iowa State and Oklahoma, both NCAA Tournament participants. Fisher recruited and coached Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, Jelena Spiric, and recruited and developed post player, Danielle Page, who earned Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors twice. Fisher's final recruiting class at Nebraska might have been her best, as she went deep into Alaska to find, recruit, and sign Big 12 Player of the Year and WNBA first round draft pick Kelsey Griffin. During the 2003-04 campaign, the Huskers finished 18-12 overall, and produced one of the top 10 turnarounds in NCAA Division I women's basketball with 10 more victories. The team earned two wins over top 25 teams; the team cracked the top-25 national rankings for the first time since 1999; and the 2004 recruiting class was ranked 28th nationally. In five seasons as the head coach at Wyoming, Cindy Fisher compiled a 59-81 record. However, Fisher's accomplishments at Wyoming go well beyond her overall coaching record. Cindy Fisher's Cowgirl teams showed improvement in each of her five seasons, culminating with an 18-12 mark in 2002-03. The 18 wins were the school's most victories since 1989-90. She also led the Cowgirls to their first postseason appearance since 1989-90 with a trip to the 2003 WNIT, where Wyoming notched a first-round win over Montana. The WNIT win over Montana marked the first postseason victory in Wyoming women's basketball history. Her 2001-2002 team at Wyoming finished No. 1 in the country in academic excellence with a team GPA of 3.486. Before taking the job at Wyoming, Cindy Fisher spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Old Dominion. She served as the Lady Monarchs' recruiting coordinator and scheduling coordinator and prepared scouting reports, while also acting as the team's public relations liaison. During her three-year stint, ODU compiled a 92-8 record, including a 34-win season and a pair of 29-win seasons. Old Dominion advanced to the national championship game in 1997, and qualified for the Sweet 16 in each of her three seasons. Fisher also built up her coaching resume with stops at Weber State (1994-95), Mesa CC in Arizona (1988-90; 1993-94), and Illinois State (1992-93; graduate assistant, 1990-92).

CLIMBING THE CHARTS: MAYA HOOD Now in her sixth year at the University of San Diego, Maya Hood's name is already all over the Torero record books. Her time at Alcala Park hasn't gone as she planned when she arrived on campus in 2012 with her twin sister Malina from nearby La Jolla Country Day. She jokes that when her playing career is over she should write a book. Her journey at USD certainly started with a storybook beginning as she won WCC Newcomer of the Year after being second on the team with 10.3 points per game. After missing the 2013-14 season to give birth to her son Elijah, her sister Malina had taken over the Toreros' role as the team's go-to scorer. In her redshirt junior year (2015-16), Maya and Malina combined to score 32.6 points per game while creating havoc on the defensive end. Maya led the team with 9.5 rebounds per game and set a school record with 84 steals on her way to being named the WCC's Defensive Player of the Year. With Malina graduated, the 2016-17 season was Maya's time for the spotlight. Early on she was averaging 18.1 points on an efficient 57.5 field goal percentage while hauling in 8.1 rebounds per game. But in the team's ninth game of the season, Maya tore her ACL and was forced to miss the remainder of the season. After being granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA as a medical redshirt, Maya is back in hopes of leading the Toreros to a WCC Championship while cementing her status as one of the best players in program history.
