April, 2012 Precision Rifleman 5 Hit By A Train! How One Man Lived to Shoot Another Day Four days after his birthday in the morning of August 26, 2000, Bill Forrester left for Borden Rifle Range in Indiana as he had done for several years. The fog was heavy and he couldn t see more than a foot in front of him. He pulled up to the railroad crossing and stopped. He waited and didn t hear or see anything. As he moved forward he heard a faint whistle blow and then all hell broke loose. Bill gunned the accelerator in a vain attempt to complete the crossing before the train arrived but to no avail. The third car of the train impacted the left rear wheel of Bill s car dragging both 50 yards down the tracks before coming to a halt. As train personnel ran to assess the situation, Bill regained his senses and discovered his predicament; he was alive but trapped in his car which lay upside-down and on top of him. His thoughts begin to race and he thought that he just might have a chance as long as the gasoline in his car didn t ignite. Ironically, Bill had to yell for help for about 30 minutes before the train s personnel realized that he had actually survived the accident! After patiently enduring the 2 1/2 grueling hours it took for rescue personnel to pry his dashboard off of him and extract him from his vehicle using the jaws of life, Bill remained conscious throughout the entire ordeal. He was sent by helicopter to Louisville, KY, about a 30 minute flight to which Bill laments not being able to enjoy the view. Remarkably, he suffered only a cracked tailbone, multiple abrasions on his back and a gash on his head that required stitches. Bad yes, but not at all as bad as things could have been. In another twist of fate, during the next month, two other people were hit by trains within 3 miles of that location. The track used in which this accident occurred has since been closed. When talking about this harrowing ordeal Bill says he is blessed to be here as he could have easily been killed 12- years earlier on that foggy day. He has since survived two bouts of cancer in 2009 and continues to shoot benchrest although he admits these episodes have slowed him down a bit. Since beginning benchrest in 1972, Bill has amassed 9 world records and 17 Hall of Fame points. His records include the following: 1980: HV 5-shot 300-yd agg (.3728) 1980: HV 5-shot 200 & 300-yd combined aggregate (.4098) 1997: UNL 100-yd Reed s Run Range 2004: UNL 100-yd Nationals, Kelbly s Bill Forrester, Benchrest Enthusiast

6 Precision Rifleman Herrick Sets New 1,000-Yard Benchrest World Record On a day like any other, he shot like none other! Ross Herrick of Tucson, Arizona has been shooting long range benchrest less than 10 years but he sure seems to have a knack for the sport. He already holds an NBRSA World Record for 5-Shot Score High-Score of 50-4X set on January 10, 2009. Now on January 14, 2012, he bests his other world record of 5.3438 group for the Two-Gun 6-Target Aggregate at 1,000- yards. Incredible! Ross Herrick 1,000-Yard New World Record Holder As if that wasn t enough, while interviewing Ross about his record, I was surprised to discover he had shot both the Light and Heavy gun classes with his Light gun only. Most shooters use both a light and heavy gun for the two-gun aggregate. The heavy gun presumably provides more stability and accuracy for the distance shot. Ross told me this is a one-way deal; you can substitute a lite gun for a heavy gun but not the other way around. The aggregate was shot in 3 5-shot groups for lite gun and 3 10-shot groups for heavy gun; a total of 45 scored shots. Of the 45 shots all were within 5.3438 at 1,000-yards. When asked about the difference between long range and short range shooting, Ross says there s really no difference except the mistakes are 10- times worse in long-range. What may look acceptable at 100-yards can look pretty darn ugly at 1,000 since it takes the bullet about 1¼ seconds to reach the target and the wind can knock it out about 3-feet. I asked about his strategy and Ross said that after he fires at the last sighter, they take the target down and replace it with a score target. During this time, he adjusts the scope and rifle according to his sighter and watches for wind changes in the shrubbery, trees and flags. He won t adjust the scope; he uses hold-off to correct for windage. When asked how he got started in the sport, Ross says when he moved from Houston to Tucson in 2003, he moseyed into a local gun shop looking for a hobby to keep him out of the penitentiary. In Texas, he shot pistols on Saturdays but in Tucson these matches were on Sundays. ross wanted to shoot on Saturdays. While visiting the local gun shop he ran into Earl Hines and Frank Wells who were active long-range shooters at Sahuaro 1000-Yd Benchrest Club. One thing led to another and Ross walked out with a police sniper rifle sold to him by Earl Hines. Earl had been quite the highpower silhouette shooter in his day (circa 1970). Ross claims it s Earl and Frank s fault he began shooting long range and when he gets his chance he aims to tell them so! When asked if he works in a gun-related trade and if this has helped catapult him to fame in long range shooting he responds that he pin-stripes New 1,000-Yard World Record 2-Gun 6 Target Aggregate 5.3438 cars!? Huh? Ross says that he turns off his brain which helps him oftentimes with pin-striping and long-range shooting. Well Ross, congratulations to a well earned world record. I m certain it won t be your last. Ocock Warms Up The Cactus Warm-Up Feb 4th and 5th we shot a Warm-up match for the Cactus Classic at the Ben Avery Range Phoenix AZ. It was a bit breezy and maybe we got all the wind out of the way and the cactus will be light, readable winds. Temps were lows of high 40 s and high s were low 70 s. Not much mirage and if you saw some it was usually the least of your worries. 8 Precision Rifleman Norm Jeffery Takes Visalia Sportsman s 1st 2-Gun of 2012 The Visalia Sportsman s Association shooting season opened with a light and heavy varmint match on February 18-19, 2012. This match serves as a warm-up for the Cactus Classic and allows the 27 competitors that came to get their rifles tuned up. The weather for the weekend was cold with the temperature hovering around fifty degrees both days. The switching winds made for some interesting shooting at times. The light varmint 100-yard match was won by Norm Jeffery shooting a.2040 aggregate. Bill Mellor shot a.090 screamer for small group honors. Dan Lutke took over the 200-yard match and won the first place trophy with a.2833 aggregate. A.248 screamer shot by Dennis Thornbury won the 200-yard small group trophy. Everet Smith was the big winner taking the first place trophy for the grand with a.2796 aggregate. Joe Stanovich definitely had the conditions figured out along with a good tune on his rifle for the heavy varmint 100-yard match. Joe shot five one s for a nice.1628 aggregate to win the first place trophy. The small group trophy was won by Bob McGraw shooting a.117. Marty Childers won the first place trophy for HV 200-yards with a.2879 aggregate. Mel Iwatsubo took the small group trophy with a.246 screamer. The winner of the HV Grand aggregate trophy with a.2681 was Norm Jeffery. HV Winners L-R: Joe Stanovich, Jack Childers, Marty Childers Norm Jeffery, Bob McGraw, Mel Iwatsubo & Gary Sinclair Shooting steady all weekend during some tough conditions, Norm Jeffery came out on top and won the first place two-gun with a.2850 aggregate. --Bill Mellor Two-Gun Top 5 for Visalia Sportsman 1st Place Norm Jeffery 0.2850 2nd Bob McGraw 0.2978 3rd Walt Berger 0.3012 4th Joe Stanovich 0.3023 5th Gary Sinclair 0.3027

After having great predictions for the weather all week, we had a scare on Friday with heavy snow flurries late in the day. They would not last, but the winds that brought them out of the north stayed around all weekend. Saturday was shootable, but you had to bring your skills to stay in the running. Sunday was a whole other story; the steady wind from the south with wild gusts from all directions wreaked havoc on the target boards. I will have to replace alot of the plastic keepers before the next match. With 33 shooters it was a great start for the Group season here at Bench Rest Rifle Club. Greg King won the LV 100 with a.2972 aggregate but Steve Turner pulled out the small group with a.155. After the switch to HV, Steve Turner kept slugging away and with another small group of.078 took the win for HV100 with a.2160 aggregate. Mark Harpenau has Cabin Fever! Sunday brought the forecast of high winds and warming temps. High winds were an understatement and the warming trend took most of the day. We had a steady 10 mph wind and 40 mph gusts every time I would call the shooters to the line. The temperature slowly got up to the mid 50 s by the time we finished. We started the day off with the HV first and Mark Harpenau won the HV 200 with a.3756 aggregate. Terry Hall worked hard to get a.483 for the small group. Everyone wanted the day to end with all the wind so we kept it rolling fast. We finished up the Heavy and got started with the LV early in the morning. Greg King showed that he could ride the wind and won the LV 200 aggregate with a.4744 while Steve Turner hammered back in with the small group at.480. The Light Varmint Grand Aggregate April, 2012 Precision Rifleman 9 Winner was Greg King followed by Larry Scharnhorst in second and Mark Harpenau rounding out the top three. Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate Winner was Mark Harpenau with Steve Turner in second and James Carstensen third. The 2-Gun went to Mark Harpenau, with Steve Turner 2nd, Greg King 3rd, Larry Scharnhorst 4th and Ron Hoehn 5th. With the mild winter I was worried that I might have a low turnout. As luck would have it, this was our largest group for February in three years. I cannot thank you all enough for helping to support Group shooting here at BRRC. Remember our April Shoot is a night match that starts at 5pm on Saturday. Hope to see you all then -- bring a friend help Bench Rest Grow. 14 Precision Rifleman Winds of Manatee: Murdica is The Best Damn Shooter in Florida! On February 11-12, 2012 Manatee Gun Club hosted the annual Winds of Manatee LV/HV 100/200 group match with 24 shooters contesting the Best Damn Benchrest Shooter in Florida trophy. Shooters from across the country attended; including California, Kansas, Iowa and Ohio as well as the Southeast. We had pleasant weather for a while; it was tourist weather up until match time. But at Winds Of Manatee, that never lasts. It s not often you see folks in south Florida wearing fur hats and insulated coveralls! It sure was nice to visit with everybody! Good company, good food and good times with a few adult beverages thrown in - it don t get much better. We began the match Saturday morning with LV100. Temps were in the 50 s, with a little dampness from last night s rain. Northwest winds were not too strong but were tricky with heavy cloud cover. Winner was Gene Bukys (2360), second was Larry Kuse Firing Line at Winds of Manatee LV100-Yard Aggregate Gene Bukys...2360 Larry Kuse...2640 Steve Huff...2782 Bob Davidson...2798 Billy Stevens...2846 Small Group Rod Schneider...0.122 LV200-Yard Aggregate Gene Bukys...3438 Paul Fuller...4019 Cecil Peterson...4027 Small Group Gene Bukys...0.327 LV Grand Aggregate Gene Bukys...2899 Cecil Peterson...3543 Billy Stevens...3742 (2640), and Steve Huff (2782) in third place. Rod Schneider shot a 122 for small group. After lunch we shot HV100. Temps got up to the high 60 s, with the wind picking up and becoming more treacherous. Lou Murdica (2236) came in first, edging out second place Larry Kuse (2288) on the last target. Third place went to Cecil Peterson (2580) on the strength of a purty little 094 slack grabber; which also took this afternoon s small group prize, edging out Billy Stevens 105. Sunday morning we began the 200 yard contest with HV. Temps were in the 40 s and overcast skies with a brisk and treacherous north wind. Winner was Steve Huff (3009). Second place was taken by Manny Garcia (3020). Third was Billy Stevens (3145). Small group honors went to Steve Huff with a 340. Gene also shot a.327 for small group. In HV Grand, Lou Murdica (2943) was first with Billy Stevens (3115) in second and Manny Garcia (3283) third. LV Grand had Gene Bukys (2899) first, Cecil Peterson (3543) second, and Billy Stevens (3742) third. Top 5 in the 2-Gun combined aggregate are as follows: fifth place Gene Bukys (3711), fourth, Bill Von Minden (3618) third place was Cecil Peterson (3431) and Billy Stevens (3428) took second. The Best Damn Benchrest Shooter in Florida title for 2012 went to Lou Murdica with a.3352 combined aggregate. Thanks to all for attending. Yall make the work worthwhile. Thanks to Dwight St Romain for calling the match. He did great for his first outing; Dana English, Grayson Lambert and Dustin Spears for running targets; Larry Tolksdorf and Jim Barkey for helping with refreshments; and On a Sea Cruise Larry Costa for loaning the scoring trailer and PA system. The only down note to the weekend was not having our pal Art Kelley there to keep us on our toes. We really enjoyed it, though, and look forward to next year. Ask Uncle Timmy... A Monthly Column of Shootin Shenanigans Dear Uncle Timmy: I am interested in reading some reference material on the psychology of benchrest shooting. What do you suggest? Dear Reader: there are two types of references that meet your needs. The first is the myriad of books, audio sources, videos and lectures that basically preach rah, rah me. I can do it. The second type is perhaps what you are looking for. It consists of books written by people who are experts in their respective fields. Here are a few suggestions to get you started: 1) Atilla, Scourge of the Nationals, by Slong Long. Professor Long skillfully weaves excerpts from Atilla the Hun s personal diary with shooting strategy for wining the NBRSA varmint nationals. 2) The Killing Fields of Benchrest, by Mea Son (second wife of Pol Pot). Ms. Son recites lessons learned by rote under physical duress and how these relate to the sport of benchrest. 3) On the Razor s Edge: the Thin Boundary Between Deviant and Pathological- Behavior, by Professor Rodomont Loquacious Blusterlarynx III. Though not strictly about benchrest chapters 6-11 uncannily describe normal behavior at any benchrest match. Dear Uncle Timmy: What are the latest fashion trends in benchrest attire? Dear Fashionata: Rather then go into specifics let me answer your question in broad terms. Benchrest fashion is like a redneck Halloween costume party where everyone wears baseball caps. Dear Uncle Timmy: My equipment and reloading boxes seem to get heavier every year and I keep getting older. Sooner or later I won t be able to lift them. What do you suggest? April, 2012 Precision Rifleman 15 Dear Geezer: You are in luck! I have the exact solution you need: Uncle Timmy s Miracle Monkey Gland Serum. It is made with a secret formula by pygmies in Equatorial Africa and smuggled, er, I mean shipped directly to your door by the former organizers of Fast and Furious. One slug of this magic elixir and you will be transformed. Your hair will grow back on top of your head*. Your butt will loose its flat shape**. Your teeth will be full and strong***. You will be able to climb trees again****. Soon you will be slinging those boxes around effortlessly***** while you sing the praises of Uncle Timmy s creation******. If you act now and send $20.00 to the magazine Attn: UTMMGS you will receive a free genuine wooden twig for digging in termite nests. Some side effects may occur: *and all over your body **and turn bright purple ***and sharp ****and eat their leaves *****trajectory and aim vary wildly ******making hooting & howling noises Austin Rifle Club Varmint For Score & Hunter Match Varmint For Score Standings February 26, 2012 Name Place Score Caliber Action Barrel Smith Stock Scope Powder Weight Primer Bullet Gary Bristow 1st 250/17X 30ppc Bat Kreiger Bristow Kelbly Leu45 4198 30.9 205M 118 Cheek Frank Wilson 2nd 250/16X 30BR Stolle Bartline Wilson Nex March 4198 205M Madgen 127 Andy Ruzdavines 3rd 249/14X 30ppc Bat RockCreek R. NBRSA News... During the Winds of Manatee match, which Art directed for several years, he was still in a convalescent home. He passed the Monday following the match. Buddy Ross writes, We just missed having him there with us. Longtime friend Larry Costa helped Art with cleaning/loading/moving equipment at all the big matches, while staying at the top of the standings himself. April, 2012 Precision Rifleman 19 been left off last time they met. As a friend, he d do almost anything for you. I d bet most shooters have an Art story or two. Jean Louis Espinet Passes Jeanne S Takano, MD Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Takano family at the sudden passing of Jeanne, beloved wife of Turk Takano. Turk met Jeanne E Strickler at Super Shoot #2 at the Bob Hart Range in Pennsylvania in May 1974. She was a Pediatric ICU attending physician at Children s Medical Center of Dallas and retired a few years ago. Turk and Jeanne shot at the Super Shoot as a husband and wife team several times. She shot semi-competitively from 1973 through 1987. Art Kelley: Ironman of Benchrest As long as I knew Art, he would pack up his van/trailer in late summer and be gone to both Nationals, fitting in other matches and visiting friends in between. He d come back to Florida in the fall. He was the most independent and determined curmudgeon I have ever known! He d let nothing keep him back. To see how hard he had to work just to participate would break your heart, and at the same time, make you want to stand up and cheer his spirit. Though he needed more help to keep up the pace in later years, he still doggedly insisted on doing as much of his own match work as possible. And was always ready with his own brand of pithy, sarcastic, often self deprecating humor! But he absolutely did not suffer fools gladly. He was direct, sometimes brutally so. You always knew where he stood; definitely no fence rider, Art. He had a gift for names and faces, from his years selling insurance, I m sure. He seemed to know almost everyone in benchrest and could remember just where conversations had Jean Louis Espinet the pigman Jean Louis Espinet, AKA the pigman passed away after a long illness. Carlos Pacheco, fellow benchrest shooter shares with us the following story: The nickname comes from his mother that used to call him tenderly my little pig when he was very young and JL grew up up with it and later started to collect little pigs. When he came to benchrest, he started with me back in 1992, I discovered his collection of pigs at his place (including inside his fridge that would light up when you open the door) and in the 1995 Super Shoot at one of the Malls around Wadsworth I saw a pink PIG hat that I offered him and it became his fetish that travel with him at all the shoots that he attended from then on. People started to call him the Pigman at the benchrest matches because of his Pig hat and he started to use the nick name of Pigman in the Benchrest Central and furthermore in all shooting forums in which he participated. There you have the story behind the nickname and I am also responsible for it. If I hadn t gave him the pig hat...i tried recently to find another hat to replace the old one but never succeed in finding one.
