A Word From The Publisher Can you believe it s March already! Wow! Skeet Season is getting kicked off everywhere. If you check the Flyers Page on our website you will find a lot of shoots in March. My home club, Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club has finished the installation of our third Skeet field and we will be breaking that in on March 19th with The Windy Open. Be sure to check our Flyers Page often, as we get new flyers weekly. If we can help your club get the word out about your shoots, send us your flyers. February is not a big month for Skeet shoots, so we don t have any shoots to report on. That said, we do have some photos to share this month from our Annual Mardi Gras Quail Hunt in South Mississippi. I want to thank Harry Hawthorne for helping me with the photos. Harry got some good shots. Debbie, Skeeter and I wish you a happy St. Patrick s Day! Until I see you on the Skeet field or in these pages, I am wishing you a 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

Mardi Gras Quail Mardi Gras came early this year. While some folks go to parades and have a big party, several years ago, some friends and I started a new tradition. We spend Mardi Gras Day hunting quail at Thornhill Shooting Preserve in Jayess, Mississippi. Gary Wayne Thornhill and his family have been running Thornhill Shooting Preserve for many years. His Parents and Sister were involved, but they have passed away. Wayne has continued the operation and he always shows us a good time. Our tradition is to hunt quail in the morning and work up an appetite for a trip to the Dinner Bell in McComb for lunch. I think some come just to eat! Following are some photos I took of our 2016 Mardi Gras Quail hunt. Some of Page 9

Mardi Gras Quail The Shooting Preserve Season runs from October 1 through April 30 in Mississippi. If you don t have a Mississippi hunting license, Wayne can sell you a special shooting preserve license for a nominal fee. That license is good for a year. If you want to hunt at Thornhills Shooting Preserve, give Wayne a call at (601) 876-5633. Jayess is 30 minutes East of McComb in South Mississippi. If you go, tell Wayne you read about his operation in the Red Chute Gazette. Doug Frey Page 21

Dining on the Road In December, I went to Brentwood, TN on business for my day job. Due to the high price of air fare and the hassles associated therewith, I decided to drive. On the morning I left Brentwood, I made a stop at The Loveless Cafe to have breakfast. I had been hearing about the biscuits at The Loveless Cafe from a colleague for years, and this was the perfect opportunity to check it out. I was taking I 40 from North of Brentwood, West to Memphis and then through Arkansas. To get to I 40 from Brentwood I actually could take a route that would drive right by the restaurant which is located at 8400 Highway 100, Nashville, TN. It is only about 4 miles from I-40 Exit 192. The restaurant is actually located in what was the home of founders Lon and Annie Loveless. They started out in 1951 selling fried chicken and biscuits out their front door to travelers who passed by on U. S. Highway 100, which was a primary route between Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee at that time. Lon Loveless smoked the meats. His wife Annie made homemade preserves and biscuits from scratch using a still secret recipe. At some point they added the motel. There are new owners now. The motel has been replaced with the Loveless Hams & Jams Country Market which will take you back to the days of the old country store. There you can enjoy free coffee while you shop the pantry and gift items. Page 25

Dining on the Road Loveless Outfitters Gift Store sells an assortment of Loveless Café apparel and local artisan items. Another shop in the complex is Shimai Pottery & Gifts offering pottery, art, jewelry and carvings from artisans in the area. The Loveless Shipping Shoppe offers gifts, cards and packaging and shipping services. There are also meeting rooms and event facilities available on the property which may be used for a variety of situations. Well, I did not come to shop. I came to eat breakfast, arriving at The Loveless Cafe about 6:45 AM and was surprised to find that they do not open until 7 AM. It was a Friday morning and a number of locals and some travelers began to arrive shortly after I did. When the doors opened I was seated at a table in one of the dining rooms. My waiter brought coffee and I studied the menu. There were so many good choices many different options and platters with ingredients like; the famous Loveless biscuits, pancakes, Belgian waffles and French toast. The protein options include the famous Loveless Country Ham, City Ham (sugar cured), pork chops, bacon sausage, pit cooked pork barbeque, steak and fried chicken. Eggs can be had just about any way you can think, including a number of omelets. Of course there are grits, potatoes and Red-eye gravy. To sweeten your biscuits there is honey, sorghum and three types of Loveless Cafe preserves. Page 26

Dining on the Road Well, I had to go with Loveless Country Ham, fried eggs, grits, Red-eye gravy and biscuits. I had been led to believe that they served those big Cat Head biscuits, but that was not the case. The biscuits were actually smallish, but they did serve three which worked out quite well because they served them with small containers of blackberry, strawberry and peach preserves, one for each biscuit. The biscuits were light and fluffy and an excellent way to showcase all three preserves. The Red-eye gravy was a nice touch to accent the grits and ham. You don t see Red-eye gravy on the menu many places these days. Traditionally made with ham drippings or marrow from ham bones and coffee. It s a Southern thing. This meal really hit the spot. I will definitely stop here again if the opportunity arrives! Breakfast is available all day, but for lunch or supper, there are other traditional entree s with daily specials which include: Monday- Chicken-Fried Chicken N' Gravy Tuesday-BBQ Chicken Wednesday-Chicken N' Dumpling Thursday-Watermelon Ribs Friday-Hot Chicken Saturday-Honey-Fire BBQ Chicken Sunday-Smoked Beef Brisket Page 27

Dining on the Road The food is great, the atmosphere is charming and you just don t know who you might see at The Loveless Cafe. The walls in front room of the house are covered with autographed photos from Nashville music royalty and other celebs. If you are in the area, you need to check this one out. They are open every day from 7 AM to 9 PM. See them on the web at www.lovelesscafe.com. Doug Frey Page 28

News From The High House (A Message for Louisiana Skeet Shooters) The Louisiana Skeet Season kicks off in March. There are shoots every weekend! If you want to shoot, please pre-register. The sooner the better, It helps the shoot managers plan and prepare. Some wise shooters have already pre-registered for all of their shoots. Don t get left out because you did not plan ahead. When you show up at a shoot, please come prepared. Bring your average cards and make sure they are up to date. If you don t like doing the math on the back of your average card, you may want to try one of the Excel worksheets available for free. You can find a link to those at: http://www.mytssa.com/avgsheets.htm I have used the SkeetAverages-DU.xls version for years. It is the easiest way to keep your averages straight. I also recommend that your check your averages on the NSSA website monthly. Everyone makes mistakes, including Shoot Management. If you think you find an error, you will need to contact Shoot Management at the Club reporting the erroneous information. The NSSA will need instructions from the host Club to make any changes. Arrive early. You should attempt to get to the Registration Desk with your average card and cash or check for fees at least 45 minutes before your shoot time. If you prepare ahead of time and get there early, you will be more relaxed and will no doubt shoot better. That means you will have more fun! While you are at it, you might think about volunteering to help. Please see the Help Wanted ad on the next page. Until I see you on the Skeet Field or in these pages, I am wishing you 3 @ 8, Most Sincerely, Doug Frey President Louisiana Skeet Shooting Association Page 37

The driver rolls down his window and asks, What is going on? The man replies, Terrorists have kidnapped the entire U. S. Congress, and the are asking for $100 million dollar ransom. Otherwise, they are going to douse them all with gasoline and set them on fire! He went on to say, We are going from car to car collecting donations. THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events... Please contact us for our very reasonable rates for commercial advertisers To take advantage of this service contact Doug Frey by phone at (318) 635-6218 or via E-Mail at publisher@redchutegazette.com. 2015 All Rights Reserved Douglas F.
