AMERICA S 400 TH ANNIVERSARY The Journey That Changed the World Sandra Day O Connor, Honorary Chair For Immediate Release Contact: Kevin Crossett/(757) 253-4534 kevin.crossett@jyf.virginia.gov June 6, 2007 Robin Crawford/(202) 974-5025 crawfordr@ruderfinn.com Virginia 2007 Community Program Reaches Milestone Four-Year Anniversary Boasts Communities in Four States, Two Countries A complete listing of Virginia 2007 Communities is at the end of the release. For additional information on community events and legacy projects please visit www.americas400thanniversary.com. Williamsburg, Va. June 11 marks the fourth anniversary of the Virginia 2007 Community Program, an ambitious project that began in 2003 with 20 Virginia communities and has grown to more than 180 communities today. The community program now has representation from nearly every county in the Commonwealth. Thousands of Virginians are participating at the grassroots level to bring attention to their communities at the same time international attention is focusing on the 400 th anniversary of Jamestown, Va., America s first permanent English settlement. Nearly 1,000 projects and hundreds of million of dollars invested throughout Virginia, parts of England and communities in Georgia, Florida and Colorado are showcasing local history, attractions and programs in conjunction with America s 400 th Anniversary. The extensive international attention received by America s 400 th Anniversary has created a platform for localities to tell the story of their community and undergo civic improvements to encourage local visitation well beyond the 2007 commemoration. Two dozen communities joined Jamestown Settlement s Godspeed on an 80-day goodwill tour to six East Coast cities last spring, taking their story on the road to audiences from Washington D.C. to Boston. Others participated in the recent Anniversary Weekend, which provided an opportunity to showcase their community to tens of thousands of visitors over the three-day weekend.

When we began this program, we expected to have 50 participating communities. As word of the program spread, communities embraced it in ways that we never anticipated, said Amy Ritchie, Manager of Statewide Programs for Jamestown 2007. From garden clubs to church festivals, school projects to complete downtown revitalizations, communities throughout Virginia are finding special ways to highlight their own unique histories. Many are completing special legacy projects, involving a wide variety of citizens and groups. Community projects range from planting red-, white- and blue-themed America s Anniversary Gardens in backyards and municipal buildings to major community-wide renovation efforts designed to boost tourism and economic development in the region. Museum renovations, local festivals, hiking trails and other projects unique to individual groups are reinforcing a sense of ownership during the 18- month commemoration. Jamestown 2007, a sub-agency of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, is coordinating efforts to commemorate the 400 th anniversary of Jamestown, Va., the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. The nation s first representative government, free enterprise system and culturally diverse society began at Jamestown. State, national, and international commemorative events to salute these legacies began in May 2006 and continue into 2008. Major corporate sponsors of America s 400 th Anniversary include Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Other supporters include Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. (NYSE: BUD), AirTran Airways (NYSE: AAI), Consol Energy and CNX Gas Corporation, Dominion, James City County, Lockheed-Martin, McGuireWoods LLP, Philip Morris USA, SunTrust, TowneBank and Wolseley PLC/Ferguson Enterprises, Inc. Contributors include the City of Poquoson and Rutherfoord Insurance. More information about the commemoration is available at www.americas400thanniversary.com. ###
