A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

Most athletes grimace at the thought of ice, as it is usually accompanied by swelling and grueling pain. For the 2008 Coastal Carolina University volleyball team, nothing but ICE is acceptable. Intensity. Concentration. Enthusiasm. Head Coach Kristen Bauer said these three words will help de ne the Chanticleers 2008 season. This team has to come to each practice and every match with intensity, concentration and enthusiasm in order to reach our goals this year, Bauer said. After nishing off the 2007 season with a 15-17 overall record and 6-6 mark in the Big South Conference, the Chanticleers have I.C.E. running through their veins in anticipation for the 2008 season. The nucleus of the team remains intact, losing only one starter (Nakia Thompson) to graduation. Bauer may not have to tweak the starting lineup much as she returns 11 players with three newcomers entering the fray. With this experience, it seems only tting that much is expected of the 2008 Chanticleers. No one is satis ed yet, Bauer said. I m not satis ed yet, and I still feel like we have something to prove and our coaching staff hopes this group will take us to the next level. With a strong foundation of seasoned returnees and fresh raw talent, Coastal Carolina embarks on the 2008 season with a new motivation, I.C.E. Libero/Defensive Specialist Senior Brett Starbuck has been a constant at the libero position for the Chants. As a freshman, Starbuck demonstrated an unparalleled court sense and found herself at libero. She excelled last season, registering 607 digs to set a school record for most digs in a single season. Named the 2007 Team s Most Valuable Player, Starbuck will be relied on heavily to lead this squad during her nal season as a Chanticleer. Junior Megan Pollard returns after tallying 322 digs and 33 aces in 2007. Pollard has seen time at both libero and defensive specialist, and could see time at either position this season. Sophomore Becky Stowers and newcomer Simone Autry will be assets for Coastal Carolina in the backcourt. Last year, Stowers was looked upon at key moments to ll various roles in the back row and was very instrumental in the last few weeks of the season. Autry, a quick and stealth competitor, is loaded with raw talent and will be trained into the Coastal Carolina system of play where the Chants can utilize her quickness. Middle Blocker Junior Jill Nyhof and sophomore Megan Bickford were the only two Chanticleers to appear in all 32 matches and 116 sets last season. Nyhof enters the season in sixth spot in Coastal Carolina history, averaging 3.32 kills per game. Nyhof is versatile and capable of playing all three front row positions. Bickford recorded 325 kills and 118 blocks and was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team for her efforts. With a brilliant slide and great vision for the game, Bickford nabbed points in crucial situations last year and will be a mainstay in the middle in 2008. The loss of Nakia Thompson leaves an open door for senior Kristin Wolf and sophomore Rachel Bonertz this season. In the spring, Wolf s leadership skills have ourished both on and off the court and she could see a lot playing time in the middle this season. Bonertz has battled through a few injuries during her time as a Chanticleer, but will look to stay healthy and get into the rotation. Outside Hitter Sophomores Chelsy Kimes and Amanda Russell return rich in expereince after seeing plenty of playing time last year. Kimes had an outstanding rookie campaign, earning a spot on the Big South All-Freshman team. Kimes has a potent attack with a great vertical and a powerful swing. This deceptive attack stunned several opponents as she registered 380 kills, a team-leading 3.65 kills per game, and earned three Freshman of the Week Honors in 2007. Kimes also did her work on defense, registering 274 digs last season, and will see plenty of court time in 2008. Russell returns as one of Coastal Carolina s top passers. She is experienced with serve receive, which should have her vying for 2008 Season Outlook This team has to come to each practice and every match with intensity, concentration and enthusiasm in order to reach our goals this year. -- Head Coach Kristen Bauer a starting spot. Bauer is con dent that Kimes and Russell will ourish during the upcoming season. Serve receive has a lot to do with experience, Bauer continued. Chelsy and Amanda were primary passers last year and had to get accustomed to the speed of the college game. They already have a year under their belts and have been exposed to the pressure of being in game situations. Joining this highly touted group of hitters is freshman Erika Lightsey. With an all-around court sense, Lightsey possesses an impressive vertical and a quick arm, and could end up in the mix for playing time. Setter The setter position might produce the biggest battle this season as junior Meagan Tracey returns with freshman Kelsie Mauck and sophomore Kristin Cozzens hoping to compete for starting spot to run the Chanticleers offense. Tracey s on-the-court leadership intensi ed last season where she proved to be one of the top setters in the Big South. During her two seasons at Coastal Carolina, Tracey has registered 2,385 career assists averaging 10.99 assists per game heading into 2008. During the summer, Tracey committed herself to a rigid off-season workout. With her mental focus and aggressive play, Tracey should supply numerous scoring opportunities for the Chants this season. Mauck enters Chanticleer territory looking to prove she deserves to be on the court and will compete heavily for the starting role. Mauck is quick and exhibits a slightly different set than Tracey, adding a new dimension to the position, while Cozzens will be battling for playing time. We are fortunate to have such depth at this position. They will push each other to get better and it gives us the opportunity to play a 6-2, after playing a 5-1 during the 2007 season. Schedule Coastal Carolina will head out on the road for the rst eight matches of the 2008 season. This year s schedule includes eight opponents the Chants will see for the rst time in school history. The squad makes its rst appearance at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational Aug. 29-30, facing Winston-Salem State, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Virginia Tech. The Chanticleers will then travel to the Wichita State Classic in Kansas Sept. 4-6, where they will play ve matches, opening up against Bauer s alma mater Ohio State. That match will be followed by contests with Lamar, Wichita State, Idaho State and Cal State Bakers eld. The Wichita State Tournament will be out greatest challenge Bauer stated. In addition to playing several high caliber teams, we will have to deal with ights and the time change. Wichita State held the number one ranking in attendance last year and we are one of their prime matches, so it will de nitely be an exciting atmosphere for our team to play in. The Shockers broke several NCAA attendance records in 2007 including overall attendance with 35,698 fans, averaging 2,550 per game, and single match attendance attracting 6,122 spectators Nov. 2 against Missouri State. The Chanticleers open up their home schedule Sept. 12-13, hosting the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational where Georgia State, Troy and Chattanooga will all compete for a title that has eluded Bauer and her squad since she was appointed head coach in 1999. In the last chance to tweak their line up before conference play, the Chants will travel in-state and participate at the South Carolina State Invitational Sept. 19-20, where they will line up against S.C. State, North Carolina Central, Wofford and Hampton. Coastal Carolina will then head into conference play to contend for a Big South Championship. The Chanticleers will begin at home with Radford and 2007 Big South Champion Liberty Sept. 26-27, two opponents they faced in last year s tournament. The Chants close out the season with UNC Asheville and Presbyterian Nov. 14-15. The 2008 Big South Championship will be held in Asheville, N.C. Nov. 20-22. www.goccusports.com 3

Kristen Bauer 10th Season Ohio State, 1993 149-135 Overall 75-49 Big South Kristen Bauer begins her 10th season at the helm of the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team. In her career at Coastal Carolina, she has guided the Chanticleers to a 149-135 overall record and a 75-49 record in the Big South. Bauer surpassed Tammi McCaudy-Lee as Coastal s all-time winningest coach on Sept. 27, 2005 when the Chants won 3-1 at UNC Wilmington. Under the direction of Bauer, the Chanticleers recorded a 15-17 overall record during the 2007 season. In the Big South, Coastal nished fourth with a 6-6 record and advanced to the Big South semi nals where they fell to eventual conference champion Liberty. Rookie standout Megan Bickford was named to the Big South All- Conference and All-Freshman team, and was one of two players to appear in every game last season. Freshman Chelsy Kimes was also selected to the Big South All-Freshman team, and sophomore Jill Nyhof was named to the All-Academic team. In 2006, Bauer saw her team play a program-record 128 games in 33 matches. The Chants posted a 10-23 overall record and tied for sixth in the Big South with a 4-10 record. Two players, senior Kristin Rinne and freshman Jill Nyhof, appeared in all 128 games, while senior Laura Obert became Coastal s all-time leader in block assists with 334. Both Nyhof and Obert earned Big South honors as Nyhof was selected to the All-Freshman Team and Obert was named Academic All-Conference. Obert also received her second Academic All-District Second Team honor. In 2005, Bauer s team was 19-12 overall and nished Big South play with a record of 12-2, Coastal Carolina s best record in the Big South since going 13-1 in 1996. The squad earned the program s highest-ever NCAA Division I national ranking, nishing the season ranked 98th and in the top one-third for all Division I volleyball programs. Bauer received her second Big South Coach of the Year honor. Meanwhile, senior Katherine Jensen-Spencer collected Big South Player of the Year for her work on the court and Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year and Academic All-District Second Team accolades for her work in the classroom. Also under Bauer s guidance, Jensen-Spencer and classmate Jennifer Hampton were named to the All-Big South First Team while Brett Starbuck earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. From 2002-2004, Bauer s teams posted three consecutive 21-win seasons as well as a pair of 11-3 conference records in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, Bauer had two rst team All-Conference awardees in Jennifer Hampton and Katherine Jensen-Spencer. Off the court, Laura Obert and Jensen-Spencer became the second Coastal Carolina volleyball players to be named Academic All-District. In 2003, ve Chanticleers earned spots on the All-Conference Teams. The 2002 season saw Hampton and senior Jeanne Lambert selected as the Big South s Freshman of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Head Coach Year, respectively. Lambert, who was sidelined during the previous season with an injury, also earned First Team All-Conference status with classmate Katie Knutson, while Hampton was a Second Team All-Conference and an All-Freshman Team selection. Without Lambert in 2001, the Chanticleers struggled to a 10-20 overall record and a sixth place Big South nish at 5-9. Despite the injuries, Coastal Carolina ranked fth in the nation in digs, including Katie Knutson s ninth-place national ranking in individual digs per game. After posting a 14-17 record in Bauer s inaugural season of 1999, Coastal improved to 18-14 in 2000. Coastal Carolina s improvement was noticeable throughout the Big South Conference as it improved from 6-8 to 11-3. The 2000 squad also set a school record for consecutive victories with a 12-match winning streak late in the season. As a result, Bauer received her rst Big South Coach of the Year honor. That season, Bauer also saw Lambert earn Coastal s rst Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Academic All-District and Academic All-America honors. Additionally, Lambert was selected at the Big South s Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A 1993 graduate of The Ohio State University, Bauer received her Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and hearing science. As a member of the Buckeyes volleyball squad, she helped Ohio State capture the 1990 Big Ten Conference Championship. In addition to playing at Ohio State, Bauer also served as the head coach for the men s volleyball club team and served as the coordinator of several Ohio State University Women s Volleyball Camps throughout Ohio. Following graduation from Ohio State, the Buffalo, N.Y., native coached the varsity volleyball program at Nardin Academy Catholic High School from 1993 to 1995. During this same time, Bauer completed her master s work in audiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She was also selected as the head coach of the Western New York Senior All-Stars in 1994 and coached the Cheetah Volleyball Club s 16 and under and 18 and under USVBA teams for two years. Bauer then served as the assistant women s volleyball coach at East Tennessee State University from 1995 to 1998. During her nal year of graduate school, she served as the head girls basketball and softball coach at University High School at East Tennessee State University. Bauer earned a Master s of Arts in Teaching degree from East Tennessee State in 1999. Bauer has been honored many times as a player over the years. She was a member of the 1996 Sports Performance USVBA squad and participated in the Empire State Games six times. Bauer was also a member of the Junior Olympic program for three years and earned 12 varsity letters while a prep star at Cardinal O Hara High School. Bauer was inducted into the Cardinal O Hara inaugural Hall of Fame Oct. 14, 2005. Bauer and her husband, Kevin Smith, reside in Myrtle Beach. She arrived at Coastal Carolina after serving as an assistant coach at Samford University in 2004. Each year, Erin takes on more duties for the team, Head Coach Kristen Bauer said. She handles most of the recruiting tasks as well as works with the girls in the classroom to keep them on top of their academics. Prior to her stint at Samford, Lee played volleyball for four years at the University of Alabama. A tri-captain her senior year, she became the rst player in Crimson Tide history to have 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career assists. Lee helped Alabama to the 2000 Southeast Conference Western Division Championship as a freshman. The following year, she was selected as Alabama s Most Improved Player. In 2003, Lee became the rst player in Alabama history to be named SEC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. By the end of her four years, the former Erin Price ranked among Alabama s career leaders in not only kills and assists, but also block assists (321) and service aces (153).
