The herd has been closed herd for 30 years, replacements being homebred, though occasional bulls have been brought in from the Isle of Wight (always from the same holding). Such management helps to produce a herd of higher health status than an open herd. The vet that did the recent PD session on farm remarked that "the cows were really nice with an excellent temperament. Cow condition was good and mobility of all cows/heifers was top notch". Recent results for antibody levels on a bulk milk sample taken on 1 st November confirms the health status of the herd as follows: BVD PCR negative with low antibody levels Liver fluke negative Leptospirosis negative Positive antibodies for IBR (Common finding in this area) The herd is naturally immune from BVD or Leptospirosis (not vaccinated) A Johne's disease whole 30 cow screen sampling on 30 th November came back completely negative. The NML Johne's risk assessment report classified the herd as low risk.
