Join our field guides and research team on game reserves within the stunning Greater Kruger Area, to track, monitor and collect data on the elusive leopard, as well as other at-risk predators that call this wildlife haven home.

Monitor wild leopard populations, collecting data on their movements and home ranges that assists reserve management with conservation plans Help us to build identification kits for leopards that populate a vital database used across the region Learn practical methods used in animal research, including camera trapping, identification databases, as well as social dynamic monitoring Understand the issues around human-wildlife-conflict and how this has contributed to our declining predator populations Identify individual hyenas and critically endangered Painted wolfs, helping to understand their group dynamics and behavior Camp out at our overnight research camp once a week a truly African experience that sees you spending a night in the middle of the bush Undertake night game drives, seeing nocturnal animals in their natural environment Assist in ongoing practical conservation initiatives, including removing invasive plant species or conducting snare sweeps. This directly preserves the habitat, and lives, of the animals who call this area home Be part of local anti-poaching efforts, learning more about the issues facing this region, as well as what is being done to prevent it Experience real-life wildlife conservation in-action and learn more from our team of experts Live in the heart of the world-famous Greater Kruger Area, in your own private volunteer lodge surrounded by wildlife During your downtime, explore Blyde River Canyon, take in the sights of the Panorama Route, go for a hike, take a swim in our pool, or put another stamp in your passport by visiting the intriguing land-locked country of Swaziland

This project is based in the stunning Greater Kruger Area of South Africa famous for its breath-taking scenery and protection efforts to save at-risk and endangered wildlife. The focus of this project is to carry out vital surveys on predators like Leopards, Lions, Wild Dogs and Hyenas in both protected and non-protected areas, where expanding habitat loss due to a growing human population, and the subsequent expansion of agriculture, roads and houses means that there is increased conflict between humans and wildlife. With the new in-depth knowledge gained through data collected by volunteers, more informed management and protection strategies can be developed and implemented. The leopard is the most widespread and adaptable big cat, but it is also one of the most persecuted. Information on population densities is very limited and the risks facing them are relatively unknown. These graceful animals are now classed as vulnerable. With your help, our aim is to understand the relationships between the leopard populations, the areas in which they live and impact of human encroachment. By understanding the human-animal conflict, we can help ensure a sustainable future for South Africa s leopards. Africa s iconic species is continuing to disappear at an alarming rate. With a 43% drop in the lion population in the past 20 years and a total eradication of lions in 14 African countries, hands are needed on the ground to save these amazing animals. You will be instrumental in collecting data on specific lion prides during your daily research drives. This contributes to detailed statistics on their pride dynamics, social structures and the effect of human conflict, which are all invaluable in the protection of lions. We are partnered with ALERT (The African Lion & Environmental Research Trust) and the Lion Management Forum (LiMF), where PhD students work on the movement of prides and the protection of lions in Africa. Spotted hyenas are strong, smart animals that are often misunderstood. These courageous animals are also experiencing a continual population decline. Help us monitor hyena populations so we can better understand their densities, distribution and behavior. The elegant African wild dog is one of the world s most endangered mammals and it is the second most endangered carnivore in Africa. Hunting and habitat loss have hit their populations hard. Their population has now dwindled to approximately 6000 left in the wild across Africa. With your help, our aim is to collect location and pack ID data to better understand their territories, pack dynamics and conflict with landowners.

Join our qualified guides and researchers in search of the Leopard and other predators. Observe the animals in the wild and collect data that feeds into our databases, insuring that vital individual and group records are consistently updated and maintained. Your work will help to identify their movements, behaviors and individual animals in the field, giving us a greater insight into these iconic species, their densities, and their risk factors. All of this information will help mitigate human-wildlife conflict. You will assist with physical conservation work by helping us maintain the ecosystems and key ranges of these predators. Your time will be spent on activities like invasive plant control, clearing encroaching bush on game reserves and taking part in essential snare sweeps. This work will help ensure that ecosystems are restored to full health and will help the local wildlife to flourish. Your help with data processing and analysis will allow us to create reports, ID kits, maps and profiles on the animals we observe. You will learn how to recognize individuals using their fur patterns, scars and whiskers. The data that you collect contributes to the essential research that we carry out, in conjunction with partner organizations, to ensure the long-term protection of these iconic carnivorous species.

During your time with us, we will get you involved in different and exciting activities. Partnering with a local Reptile Centre you will clean their cages, assist with the reptile food garden, and maybe overcome your fears of spiders and snakes by learning about them and holding them if you wish! Fancy camping under the stars? No sleeping bag required! In a Big Five Private Game Reserve, you will have the chance to monitor all the wildlife, record data on them, and just simply enjoy what the bush has to offer. You will be doing day and night drives, and have an amazing dinner in the tented glamorous tented campsite. Be involved with vital camera trap surveys. Help collect camera trap photos from the field and learn how to identify a variety of different animal species including a diverse range of predators. Using the photos collected you will be involved with identifying individual leopards and lions using their distinct coat and whisker patterns. This helps us advance our understanding of our individual animals and expand our ID databases. Last but not least! Our knowledgeable Field Guides and on-site staff will hold presentations to enhance your understanding on topics such as: rhino poaching, giraffes, lion conservation, bio indicators, beetles and bugs and many more.
