19th Annual Omaha Longbeards Women in the Outdoors Workshop August 17 18, 2018 Platte River State Park Louisville, NE The Women in the Outdoors Program provides opportunities for women and girls (14+) to learn and enjoy outdoor skills in a friendly environment, meet people with similar interests, and obtain a greater appreciation of the outdoor world. 2018 Class List Attracting Backyard Birds * Basic Archery Basic Dutch Oven Breakfast Bonanza * Basic Dutch Oven Dinner @ Grandma s * Basic Fishing Pre-registration is required, limited to 75. Beginner Shotgun Classes are filled in order of receipt of paid registration. Beginners Guide to the Great Outdoors Bow Hunting Registration Deadline - July 31, 2018 Gun Cleaning and Care Registration fee ($95) includes Friday and Saturday classes, dinner on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, and a 1 year membership to WITO/NWTF. Courses Please Note Organizing the workshop takes place several months in advance. Every effort is made to offer all scheduled classes. Due to circumstances beyond our control, instructors and schedules may change. Attracting Backyard Birds - Are you interested in learning about feeding the birds in your neighborhood? Do you have questions about which feeders and seed types attract birds to your yard? This class will focus on the basics and beyond of backyard bird feeding. Class will be indoors. New Basic Archery - Introduction to archery and shooting! The lesson includes a brief discussion of history, safety and equipment. You are guided through the fun of picking up a bow for the first time (or in a long time), and leave with the confidence of having a well rounded introduction, and the resources to explore the sport further. All equipment is included or bring your own. Basic Dutch Oven Breakfast Bonanza Looking for something new to cook in camp for breakfast? Come get some new ideas for easy, fast, and tasty morning meals. We will also discuss Dutch oven cooking methods, selection, and care. This is a beginner-level class, all welcome. New Basic Dutch Oven Dinner @ Grandma s - Cooking chicken and gravy, biscuits, German green beans, and gooey chocolate cake in Dutch ovens will transport you right back to Sunday dinner at grandma s house. We will also discuss Dutch oven cooking methods, selection, and care. This is a beginner-level class, all welcome. New Basic Fishing - Hands-on instruction for choosing equipment, as well as landing the fish. Learn about equipment, knot tying, choosing bait, loading a reel and casting in this logical and simple approach to fishing. Participants will need a 2018 NE fishing permit ($7.50 1 day permit for resident or $9.50 for nonresident). Beginner Shotgun - Learn proper techniques in gun handling safety and get tips on how to shoot shotguns. Participants will shoot clay rocks. Firearms and safety items will be provided. Must have prior shooting experience or take Intro to Firearms. Beginners Guide to the Great Outdoors - How to be prepared for anything from a walk in the park to a multiday camping trip. Topics include: What are the 10 essentials and how do I use them; What is Leave No Trace; First Aid basics and how to avoid needing them in the first place; Reading the weather. Rave reviews as a new class last year. Bow Hunting - This class will cover the basics of bow hunting and equipment. You will shoot at various animal targets learn tree stand selection, safety, preparation for hunting, tracking and preparation and care of game. Free Time - We know some want to enjoy the social activities on Friday but not interested in a class after a day at work. This option does not take a space away in a class. Explore the park on your own, take a nap, or hang out with friends. Gun Cleaning and Care - Learn the basics to gun cleaning, types of lubricants/solvents and how to break a firearm down for cleaning and putting it back together. Hanging Macramé Candle Holder - Lanterns hung from trees are so romantic, could hang when camping, in the yard, porch or wherever you can securely place the hanging ring. Keep bugs away with a citronella candle, or add a battery operated votive with a timer to hang and forget on the porch. Create a custom handmade macramé hanger including jar, ring, and candle. New Most classes are outdoors, wear sun and bug protection for your personal comfort and safety for all classes.

Courses Hike and Sketch or Journal - Go for an easy hike along the trails of the park with a naturalist and artist. Learn about some of the native plants and insects along the way, then spend time sketching what you saw. Wear comfortable shoes. Bring your sketch pad, or journal if you wish or just enjoy that time to sit and reflect in nature. New Introduction to Firearms - Learn basic firearm safety, range safety, the use of various firearms and gun handling. Gain confidence and knowledge about firearms. Time permitting, class will conclude with live shooting. Firearms and safety items will be provided. If you have no prior shooting experience, this class is required for beginning shotgun or beginning rifle. Introduction to Handgun Shooting - Join some of the best women instructors in Nebraska who will guide you through a safe, fun, and engaging session. Learn what you need to know to confidently and safely handle a firearm. The program will address gun safety, firearms vocabulary, how a pistol operates, how to select the best firearm for you and how to safely and competently fire. You will be introduced to a most enjoyable past-time that you can do on your own, with friends and family. Facilitated by Patricia Harrold, State Leader & Regional Trainer of the Well Armed Woman Chapters, she and her team will help you leave the session feeling empowered, educated & equipped! Class is limited to woman 21 years and up, 18-20 yr old may participate with a female parent or guardian over 21. No one under 18. New Introduction to Kayaking - Haven t tried kayaking before and want to learn the basics or practice skills on the lake? Learn the basics of this popular sport. Information will include water safety, how to enter and exit the boat, paddle strokes and other maneuvers. Participants will practice skills on the lake, so prepare to get wet. No experience needed. Kayaking - Have kayaking experience on a lake and ready to get wet and wild and take a trip down the river with NE Game & Parks staff? This class requires people to be able to get in and out of a kayak on river sandbars, be able to drag a kayak in a river situation and be able to paddle the distance down the river. Prior kayaking experience on water is a must! Under 18 may participate with parent or guardian listed on registration form in the same class. Knife Sharpening - This class is geared to anyone who wants to learn how to create and maintain a sharp edge on kitchen, pocket or hunting knives. The course covers care and maintenance of blade sharpening. This is a hands-on class. Bring 1 or 2 personal knives to sharpen. Turkey Hunting Basics - This class will cover the basics of hunting wild turkeys. Discussion will include hunting strategies include equipment, clothing, camouflage, calling, patterning a shotgun, chokes to use and safety. Participants will shoot shotguns on the range, then move to another park area to discuss blinds and decoys. Yoga - Learn to use Yoga postures to create strength, flexibility, and stress reduction. All levels encouraged. If you have a yoga mat available, please bring it. Will have some available for use. Questions Additional information will be available on our website closer to the workshop. Friday Evening Friday night classes and dinner are included with the registration fee. Check in anytime after 4, buffet dinner ready by 5. Classes start at 6:30. After class is free time and weather permitting a campfire behind the Goldenrod Cabins. Lodging is in camper cabins with 5 people per cabin, all cabins have 2 sets of bunk beds and a full/queen bed. Bedding provided (make and strip your bed), towels, refrigerators in the cabins. Bathroom and shower facilities are located nearby. All camper cabins have a/c. Cabin space is $30 per person. Space is filled in order of registration received. Stay a second night (cabins) at no additional cost - explore the park or just relax. Dinner Saturday and breakfast Sunday is on your own. Bring your own food and charcoal to cook over the grill at cabin, or visit nearby restaurants in Louisville or South Bend. There is a breakfast buffet at the park restaurant in the Scott Lodge on Sundays. We are not offering a teepee option. If you wish to reserve a teepee for the weekend contact the Park Office @ 402-234-2217.
