CSU looks for 1st road win at Drake Colorado State (3-2) travels east to Des Moines, Iowa, to take on the Drake Bulldogs (3-3) Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. MT at the Knapp Center (7,152). After dropping their first three contests, the Bulldogs have won three in a row and are looking to extend that streak back on its home court Wednesday. Drake is 1-1 at the Knapp Center this season. Rising to the top last season after a seventh-place preseason projection, the Rams are predicted to finish first in the Mountain West this year. CSU returns four starters, including preseason all-conference selection Ellen Nystrom. Combo-guards Gritt Ryder and AJ Newton return with a year of experience together as court generals to lead the team for their senior seasons. The game will be broadcast live on AM 1410 KIIX or fans can hear a live stream on iheartradio. Matt Wozniak, now in his sixth season with the Rams, calls all the action. Live game video will be available at GoDrakeBulldogs.com with a paid subscription. Live game video will also be available via the Mountain West Network at CSURams.com/videos. About Drake Drake returned four starters to a team that finished 17-15 overall last season, and 9-9 in the Missouri Valley Conference (fifth). While playing in Drake's first game this season, preseason all-mvc player Kyndal Clark suffered a knee injury. She will be out for the remainder of the season. This season the Bulldogs were tabbed to finish third in the conference, receiving two first-place votes. Lizzy Wendell was also named to the preseason all-mvc team. She averages a league-leading 22.3 points per game so far this year, shooting 49.0 percent. The sophomore is also 12-of-33 from three-point range. Also averaging double figures early this year are starters Caitlin Ingle (12.5) and Becca Jonas (11.5). Ingle is the team's assist leader, while Jonas leads the Bulldogs on the glass with 6.0 rebounds per game. In the Bulldogs' last game vs. Fordham at the UTSA Thanksgiving Tournament on Sunday, Drake and the Rams were locked in a tight battle. After 14 lead changes and seven ties, Wendell hit a key three-pointer to allow the Bulldogs to pull away with less than four minutes remaining. It was enough to put the game out of reach as the team went on to win 62-56. Wendell was named tournament MVP for averaging 20.5 points over two games in San Antonio. Freshman Becca Jonas was named MVC Newcomer of the Week after being named to the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic All- Tournament Team. She recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. Fordham on Sunday. Despite Wendell's quiet success from downtown, the Bulldogs as a team shoot a three-point field-goal percentage of.277. Opponents haven't had much luck against Drake, however, shooting just.273. Like the Rams, the Bulldogs have struggled from the charity stripe this season, shooting.602. Wendell is the only Bulldog starter shooting above 70.0 percent so far this year. Drake is 1-1 at home this season with a loss in the season opener to South Dakota (83-78) and a win over Wisconsin (89-77). In two home games this season the Bulldogs have averaged 2,639 fans at the Knapp Center. Series vs. the Bulldogs Wednesday's meeting is the third game between the two schools. The Rams are undefeated in the series, winning last season at Moby, and back in 1998 in the first round of the NCAA tournament on a neutral court. This will be Colorado State's first trip to the Knapp Center in Des Moines. This will be head coach Ryun Williams' third matchup vs. Drake. He holds a 2-0 career record against the Bulldogs. A win will... Bring head coach Ryun Williams record to within two victories of his 300th career win at the NCAA level. Williams' career record currently stands at 297-182 (.620). Earn Colorado State its first true road win of the year. Set the Rams back on the winning track with their fourth victory this season. Last time vs. Drake - Nov. 16, 2013 The Colorado State women's basketball team set several career highs, defeating the Drake Bulldogs, 92-77, at Moby Arena on Nov. 16, 2013. With the win, the Rams improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 1-2. Senior Alicia Nichols came off of Colorado State's bench and led the team with a career-high 22 points, adding three rebounds, one assist and one block. Nichols shot a phenomenal.769 field-goal percentage, converting 10 of her 13 attempts from the field. The Rams' 92 points, 42 first-half points and 50 second-half points were all season highs. The team also recorded a seasonhigh field goal percentage,.486, and three point percentage,.308. The Rams had three players reach double-figures by the end of the first half, and CSU finished the game with five players in double-digits for the second time this year. The Rams outshot the Bulldogs from the field 57.6 percent to 40.7 percent during the game. This is the second time this season that the Rams have had an 80-plus point game this season, and the Rams only had one game in 2012-13 that ended with at least 80 points. Colorado State also tallied 28 assists as a team, a season-high. Caitlin Duffy scored 16 points, a season-high, while also recording six rebounds and three assists. AJ Newton added 16 points as well, a season-high, while also registering career highs in assists (seven), and in rebounds (eight). Gritt Ryder put up her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. This is the seventh time in program history that a double-double includes assists, and the first time since Nov. 16, 2001, when Colorado State's Elizabeth English scored 12 points and 10 assists. The 10 assists by Ryder marks a season-high, and was one short of her career high of 11. Her 12 points also ties a season-high. Elin Gustavsson added 10 points for the Rams, three assists, and a career-high six rebounds. Senior Sam Martin and freshman Ellen Nystrom each added eight points to the total score, with Nystrom pulling down seven rebounds, adding three assists and two steals on the night. In the first half of the game, the lead between Colorado State and Drake changed seven times, with the score being tied five times. In the second half of the game, Colorado State took charge and sprinted ahead of the Bulldogs, outscoring shooting them from the three-point line.667 percent, as opposed to Drake's.333 three-point field-goal percentage. Colorado State added 50 points in the paint against the Bulldogs, which was the most since the Rams played South Dakota Mines in Jan. 4 of last season. CSU's bench added 38 points, while Drake's bench totaled 28 points. Last time out It took two overtime periods, but the Colorado State women s basketball team lost a tough battle in the championship game of the Omni Hotels Classic against Colorado Saturday, falling 87-81 at the Coors Events Center. With the loss CSU falls to 3-2 on the season, while CU improves to 5-1. After scoring just three points vs. TCU on Friday, sophomore Elin Gustavsson exploded at the half with a career-high 28 points. She was named to the all-tournament team for providing the Rams with a spark on offense. She was one of four players to reach double figures, as Ellen Nystrom tallied 18 points, and Emilie Hesseldal and Gritt Ryder each posted 11. CSU opened up the game playing stellar defense, grabbing rebounds with strong box-outs and creating turnovers with quick hands. The Buffaloes recorded 20 turnovers on the night, and CSU took advantage, scoring 17 points. The Rams defense allowed them to build up a seven-point lead, but just before the midway point of half the team went cold from the field, converting just one field goal over a 10-minute period. Gustavsson was the catalyst the Rams needed with 3:15 left in the first frame, scoring seven consecutive points as Colorado State closed out the frame with a one-point lead. The Swede continued her offensive prowess into the second half, totaling straight 22 points for Colorado State. In just 7.5 minutes Gustavsson single-handedly built the Rams lead up to 12 points. A bucket from Emilie Hesseldal brought Colorado State s lead to 14 before the Buffaloes shortened the gap with an 8-0 run of their own. Colorado used the next 5 minutes to close the gap completely, retaking the lead with 8:03 to play. Colorado increased its margin to four points down the stretch, but CSU wouldn t back down, tying the game up at 62 with just over 2 minutes to play. From that point on neither team led by more than two points. With the game tied at 64, the Rams had the last possession, but Keyora Wharry couldn t hit her jump-shot attempt, sending the contest to overtime. The Rams gained as much as a five-point lead in the first extra period, but CU responded, tying the game at 74 as the buzzer sounded, extending the game for another 5 minutes. The Buffaloes won the tip, as they had all night, and struck first with a layup from Colorado s leading scorer, Jen Reese (26). CSU tied the game on the ensuing possession, but two consecutive CU three-pointers would eventually put the game out of reach for the Rams, who couldn t convert down the stretch. Wharry, Hesseldal, Gritt Ryder, Nystrom and Gustavsson were in the Rams starting lineup tonight. Nystrom holds the team s longest starting streak, on the court for the tip in all 38 games of her career. CLOSING IN ON career MILESTONEs Now in his 20th season as a head coach, Ryun Williams just earned his 350th career victory. He is now closing in on another couple of other milestones in the 2014-15 campaign. Prior to taking over the reins at Colorado State, Williams led programs at South Dakota, Wayne State and Sheridan College. Three wins away from his 300th career victory at the NCAA level. Only four coaches in the Mountain West have amassed 300 career wins. 11 victories away from his 50th win at Colorado State. Williams could become the second fastest coach to reach 50 wins in program history. Only two coaches have reached 50 victories in their first three seasons at Colorado State: Tom Collen and Chris Denker. Ryder earns second Straight MW Player of the Week For the second consecutive week Gritt Ryder has been named Mountain West Women s Basketball Player of the Week for her outstanding performance at the Omni Hotels Classic. The conference made the announcement Monday. The senior shined in the first round of the tournament against former conference foe TCU on Friday. Ryder tied a career high with 25 points. She organized the Rams with poise from the point guard position against an athletic Horned Frogs team with switching defenses. Along with teammate Ellen Nystrom, Ryder was one of two players to reach double figures in each game last week, adding 11 points in a championship-round, double-overtime battle at Colorado on Saturday. The Denmark native was the only player on the court for every possible minute (90) of the two contests. It was the first time she played an entire game in a Rams uniform. It s no surprise that she leads the Mountain West in minutes played, averaging 39.2 so far this season. The Rams Record When... The Rams will potentially play four teams that closed out last season in the top 100: No. 32 BYU, No. 98 Colorado, No. 99 TCU and No. 100 Fresno State. It was the first time the Rams were ranked in the top 100 since the 2003-04 season. That year, CSU finished with a 17-12 record and a No. 93 ranking. It was also Colorado State's highest ranking since the 2002-03 season, when the team finished the year at No. 47. This season's first official RPI report will be released in January. Williams' Contract Extension Colorado State University and women's basketball head coach Ryun Williams finalized a new five-year contract over the summer that will keep the Rams' leader at the helm through at least the 2018-19 season. Williams guided the Rams to a 25-8 record (.758) and the MW regular season championship last season, a dramatic improvement from an 11-19 (.367) record in his first season at Colorado State. That improvement ranked as the third-best turnaround in the country, when factoring increase in winning percentage among teams with at least 20 wins last season. ryun williams South Dakota (1992 and 1997) Third Season at CSU 20th Season Overall (351-220) 12 Ryun Williams, a 20-year coaching veteran, just completed his second season as the head coach of the Colorado State women's basketball program and was named Mountain West Coach of the Year following an outstanding program turnaround. Williams led the Rams from 11-19 (.367) in his first season to 25-8 (.758) in 2013-14. That improvement ranked as the third-best turnaround in the country, and is the best in program history. The WBCA awarded Williams with the 2014 Russell Athletic/WBCA NCAA DI Regional Coach of the Year award. Tasked with repairing what has been nearly a decade of sub-par results, Williams brought eight new faces to the Rams' 2013-14 roster in his second season at the helm. The team quickly realized it had an irrefutable chemistry, which resulted in eight- and 10-game win streaks, totaling 17 wins in 18 games, skyrocketing them to the top of the Mountain West standings and their first regular-season championship in 12 years. The Rams, who were picked to finish seventh in 2013-14 Mountain West preseason poll, more than doubled their win total from the previous season, producing the best record in 13 years, and the third-most victories in program history. The team earned a program-record 10 all-conference awards to six players, in addition to a MW Coach of the Year nod for the second-year coach. The Rams also received their first postseason invitation in 10 years, with a trip to the WNIT. With over 20 seasons in coaching, including 19 as a head coach, Williams has compiled an impressive 348-217 career record, with stops at South Dakota (2008-12), Wayne State College (1998-2008) and Sheridan College (1995-98), leading his squads to seven campaigns of 20 or more victories, five postseason berths and two conference championships. Before coming to Colorado State, Williams was South Dakota's head coach for four seasons. He led the Coyotes to a highly successful stretch during their transition to Division I competition, and helped them become one of the nation's premier defensive teams. A staple of the Coyotes under Williams has been defense, and that was no exception in 2011-12. They ranked second nationally in blocks per game (7.3), eighth in field-goal defense (33.2) and 12th in scoring defense (52.3), leading the Summit League in all three categories. The Coyotes qualified for the WNIT for the first time ever last season as a Division-I program, which was their second straight postseason berth after competing in the Women's Basketball Invitational in 2010-11. South Dakota finished with a No. 97 rank in the RPI, the second-highest of any Summit League team and the highest mark in school history. Prior to arriving at USD in 2008, Williams spent 10 seasons at Wayne State, building that program into a perennial contender in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Williams took over a program that had won just 13 games the previous two seasons and turned it into an NCAA tournament team. His team's recorded 20 wins or more in three of his final four seasons and made appearances in the NCAA Division II North Central Region tournament in two of the last three seasons. While at Wayne State, he compiled a 181-105 record (.632) and became the winningest women's basketball coach in school history. In 2007-08, he guided the Wildcats to a 21-9 record, which included a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the North Central Region he led his team to an 85-78 upset of North Dakota for the first win in the NCAA tournament in the school's history. In 2005-06, Williams took Wayne State to its first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament, as the team notched its best season in school history by going 27-4. They were 13-1 in NSIC play and won the NSIC tournament to earn automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. That season Williams was named the NSIC Coach of the Year. Williams' players have received plenty of postseason recognition. He has had players named WBCA All-America honorable mention, NSIC Player of the Year and NSIC Tournament MVP. Two players earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Year honors, two won the Dodie Martin and two were named the league's newcomers of the year. Before taking over at Wayne State, Williams was the women's head coach at Sheridan College (Wyo.) for three seasons. While there he was named the Wyoming Conference Coach of the Year twice and was the Region IX Coach of the Year. In 1993 he began his head coaching career at Sheridan when he served as the volleyball head coach and men's basketball assistant coach. In his time as the head coach of the volleyball program he put together a 117-66 record. In 1995 Sheridan went 42-8, won the Region IX title and finished fifth at the junior college national tournament. Williams garnered Wyoming Conference and Region IX Coach of the Year honors in 1994 and 1995. Sheridan is also where Williams began his collegiate playing career. He played two seasons at Sheridan, where he was an All-Region IX player as a sophomore. In addition he was a two-time All-Wyoming Conference performer and a two-time academic all-conference selection. He then transferred to South Dakota where he earned All-NCC honors after leading the nation in free throw percentage at 91.2 percent. Williams was also named academic all-conference as a junior and senior. As a high school senior at Campbell County High School, he was named Mr. Basketball for the state of Wyoming in 1988.
