Tournament Notes: De Angelis Records 100 th : On October 2, 2005 Head Coach Kathy De Angelis recorded her 100 th career victory as a head collegiate field hockey coach against Drexel University. The Pride won the game convincingly 4-1 at Shuart Stadium. Coach De Angelis is now one of eight coaches at Hofstra, including all five of the Pride's fall sport team coaches, with at least 100 career wins. DeSimone Earns CAA Honors: Junior midfielder Leslie DeSimone was honored this past week as the CAA Co-Player of the Week. DeSimone was the first player to earn CAA honors this season for the Pride. She recorded two assists and two goals in two games against James Madison and Virginia Commonwealth. Five In a Row: By finishing the regular season 12-6, the Pride has now accomplished five straight winning-seasons with 10 or more wins in each year. This streak started in 2001, when Coach De Angelis and the Pride went 12-8. Ramdoo Leads Pride: Sophomore forward Pemba Ramdoo leads the Pride in three major offensive categories. Ramdoo, who hails from Diego Martin, Trinidad, leads the team in goals (10), assists (8), and points (28). Last year, Ramdoo was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team as she recorded seven goals, two assists, and 16 points. This year, Ramdoo is in the CAA top ten in six major categories including points, points per game, goals, goals per game, assists, and assists, per game. #1: Junior midfielder Doni-Melissa Jantzen is the backbone of the Pride contributing on 75 percent of the team s goals. Though this year Jantzen has not recorded the statistics that she did last year as a third-team All American, she is still the team s most versatile and most valuable player. In 2004, Jantzen recorded 20 points on ten goals. This year, Coach De Angelis asked Jantzen to play a more defensive role, and she responded by supporting the defense and still recording four goals and four assists. Freshman Duo: Perhaps the greatest surprise for Coach De Angelis this year was the contribution made by freshman forward s Charlia Warner and Brit Blankmeyer. Warner has recorded six goals, two assists, and 14 points for the Pride, while Blankmeyer has seven goals and 14 points. Together, Warner and Blankmeyer are responsible for one-third of the team s total goals. Defense is Key: The Fence : The Pride s defense led by junior Sekayi Liburd has done an excellent job of preventing intruders this year as opponents have only recorded 162 shots to the Pride s 226. With the help of sophomores Shannon Alexander and Ayanna McClean as well as senior Katherine Kotowski, the Pride has made junior goalie Jessica Cowperthwait s job a lot easier. She s a Keeper : For the third straight year, junior goalie Jessica Cowperthwait has started all of Hofstra s games in goal. With 68 saves so far this season, Cowperthwait has accumulated 291 career saves. Though Cowperthwait has not had the amount of saves opportunities that she had last season, she still managed to have seven games in which she recorded five or more saves. Cowperthwait has also recorded three shutouts this year. Hofstra Set To Take On Towson In Quarterfinals This Friday November 4, 2005 the Pride will play Towson University in a quarterfinal match scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. in Richmond, VA. Hofstra enters the CAA tournament as the third seed, while Towson enters as the sixth seed. Towson enters the tournament with a 3-5 record in the CAA and an overall record of 9-9, while Hofstra finished the season 12-6 overall and 5-3 in the CAA. On October 9, 2005 the Pride defeated the Towson Tigers in overtime 2-1 when freshman forward Charlia Warner scored the game-winner at the 75 th minute.
