CEO's Perspective ONE-HUNDRED-AND-SIXTY- THREE days after the first homeand-away match of the Essendon Ford Division 1 season was played on Good Friday, the thrill and excitement of Grand Final footy returns this weekend. At 2:20pm on Saturday, a brand new, bright red EDFL-branded Sherrin will be bounced at Windy Hill with the Airport West and Tullamarine football clubs to do battle to determine the premier for this year. Incredibly, this Saturday will be the third occasion these two clubs have met in the past four weeks, as they played in the final home-and-away round as well the second semi final two weeks ago. In Round 9, Tullamarine was far too strong, winning by 70 points at Leo Dineen Reserve. However, in Round 18 at home, Airport West won by 23 points and backed that up with a 56-point victory in the second semi at Greenvale a week later. A trivia fact from this week s grand final is that the last time each of these Essendon Ford Division 1 clubs won the premiership in this division, they defeated West Coburg. Airport West was successful in 2012, kicking 22 goals and 22 behinds to win by 69 points, and Tullamarine beat West Coburg by 25 points in 2003. The Division 1 Reserves Grand Final will feature Airport West against Taylors Lakes. Analysis of results from 2018 would have Airport West as the clear favourite. They finished the home-and-away season on top of the ladder with only two losses and a percentage of 270, and comfortably won the second semi by 29 points. However, Taylors Lakes is looking to continue an amazing recent run in grand finals, having been the Division 1 Reserves premier for each of the past four years. What makes their performance even more impressive is that only once in those four years did the Lions finish the home-andaway season on top of the ladder, and the biggest winning margin in any of the four grand final matches was 14 points, including two fourpoint wins. This will be an intriguing battle. The AGA Apprenticeships Plus Under 19.5 Grand Final will see Westmeadows as the home team facing East Keilor. All indicators point to a close game as they finished the home-and-away season with a similar win-loss ratio, defeated each other during the home-and-away season, and have had very strong wins in their lead up finals matches. While the Essendon Ford Division 1 Grand Final is the feature senior match this weekend, preliminary finals between Keilor and Strathmore in Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division and the Northern Saints and East Sunbury in Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 are sure to attract big following and great interest on who qualifies for the grand final. Good luck for the weekend. East Sunbury Wins First Ever Final By TARA MURRAY (via Star Weekly) EAST Sunbury displayed no nerves as it took to the field for its first ever final in Strathmore Community Bank Division 2. Despite not playing its best football in the first half against Moonee Valley, the Thunder led at the first two breaks last weekend. The Thunder then successfully fought to apply more scoreboard pressure, with its running power showing through in the final quarter. Six goals to two in the final term sealed the Thunder s first finals win 15.7-97 to 4.12-36. Thunder coach Glenn Hopkins said that despite finals at this level being a new experience for most of the players, there was a sense of calm among the group He said they handled the pressure well and weren t overawed by the situation. They were excited more than nervous, he said. They ve grown with confidence with the results. They played really well against Coburg Districts and it put them in a good mental level heading into the game. Hopkins said they were switched on right from the start, but it wasn t until the second half that they really played well. The game was played the way Moonee Valley wanted it in the first half, he said. There was a lot of stoppages and a scruffy game. We talked about it at half-time about getting the game going our way, getting our running game going. Hopkins said it was the young guns that led from the front. Brad Bernacki and Tom Cree led the way in the midfield, while Lachlan Brne and Will Wright were strong in defence. Diquan Williams kicked three goals moving between attack and defence, while Mitchell Johns kicked two goals after moving forward in the last quarter. Hopkins said they had switched their key forwards around all day and thought that Johns would provide a good contested target up forward. Cree kicked two goals. The Thunder will now face the Northern Saints in the Preliminary Final at Coburg City Oval. Roxburgh Park awaits the winner in the Grand Final. The Thunder and Saints have played each other three times this season. The Saints won two of the three games, including the most recent by a point. Hopkins said they needed to continue with the sort of form they displayed in the second half on Saturday. It will again be another physical game with these guys, he said. We ll try and make it as open as possible and get our run and carry going. 9 9 THE FOOTBALLER The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au

Aberfeldie Advances To Decider With Win Over Keilor By LUKE D ANELLO (via Leader Newspapers) A MOUTH-WATERING major semi-final match-up pitted the competition s best defensive team against the leading attacking side on Saturday. Knowledgeable football followers will tell you defence wins premierships. Aberfeldie is one win away from claiming back-to-back Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division flags after defeating Keilor by eight points in a titanic struggle to advance to the decider. While the match won t be remembered as a classic, the importance of Abers quality in the back half was underlined in the 7.9-51 to 6.7-43 triumph. Ryan Allan restricted the best forward in the top flight, Dean Galea, to two goals and was named best afield, while Matthew Clark was limited to one major and Josh Martin held goalless. I thought both defences probably got the better of their front-half opponents, Aberfeldie co-coach Adam Potter said. I think we took seven inside-50 marks for the day and we restricted Keilor to three, which was pleasing, but it probably wasn t a day that suited key forwards from either side. Josh Toy was influential off the half-back flank, Luke Blackwell and Josh Cubillo did a power of work in the middle, while young guns Jean-Luc Velissaris (two goals) and James Peters (one) also earned praise from Potter. Courtney Johns and Joel Madden impressed in the ruck When the pair met in Round 13, Keilor booted 20.9-129 the highest score conceded by the reigning premier in 2018 and prevailed by 45 points. At a rain-soaked Windy Hill, this was a different contest, with goals at a premium The teams were separated by a point at the main break and three-quarter-time before goals from Velissaris, Peters and Nicholas Cattapan in the last half-hour secured victory. Both sides had to be relentless with the way they attacked the footy all day, Potter said It was really four quarters of brutal, physical football That third quarter in particular, neither side were able to score a goal, and that last quarter we were able to have probably more front-half footy and 21 inside 50s to kick those three important goals to Keilor s two. That s the game in the end. There were a lot of contests where players for both sides had to put the bodies on the line. While it wasn t a spectacle with the weather, it was certainly a game people would have watched and thought both sides were having an absolute crack at the contest. On the downside, Josh Pound, who has 40 goals this season, is a little bit tight in the hamstring ahead of the grand final on September 16. He hasn t completely torn the hamstring, but we ll give him every chance, Potter said. He started his rehab (on Saturday) night, so hopefully he is every chance to get that opportunity because he s been super this year. I think he s been probably, in my opinion, the best small forward in the comp. THE FOOTBALLER The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au 11 11

Preview Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division By ADEM SARICAOGLU PRELIMINARY FINAL - KEILOR v STRATHMORE Sunday 2:15pm @ Windy Hill GOOD Friday footy means we ve become accustomed to Keilor v Strathmore on the big stage, but this is on a whole new level. Their two home-and-away meetings finished with margins below 20 points and were split at one apiece. At various stages both have shown consistent enough form to warrant premiership favouritism consideration and both sides boast some of the best-performed players of the 2018 season. Looking at the not-yet-public coaches votes for the 2018 Team of the Year, up to seven Keilor and Strathmore players are a solid chance of getting into the final 22 that will be revealed in the week following the grand final. Without revealing too much, most of them will be on display here. So this really is a coin flip. Keilor was unlucky in its loss to Aberfeldie last week, only going down by eight points in a game that could truly have gone either way. Had the Blues been a bit cleaner with ball in hand, perhaps they would have emerged victorious in the wet. But they didn t and it may have come at a cost with Jay White hurting his hamstring, putting yet another dent into Keilor s already undermanned back six. The return of David Gourdis will help, but the Blues will go into this prelim with key players out of action, including long-term injured stars Nick O Kearney, Mick Tanner and Sam Hooper. Strathmore isn t quite at full-strength, either. Skipper Andrew Horne missed Sunday s cruisy 40-point win over Greenvale but the Mores are well-known for their midfield depth, with Adam Iacobucci, Nick O Brien and Jaryd Cachia all playing their roles against the Jets. Hamish McIntosh s three-goal haul will no doubt give Mick McGuane something to think about as well. With Tom Condon, Kyle Weightman and Alex Grima each kicking two of their own as well, Strathmore will be hoping it has the firepower it needs to overwhelm Keilor here. In good conditions, this will be some prelim at Windy Hill. THE FOOTBALLER The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au 13 13

Grand Final Preview Essendon Ford Division 1 By TARA MURRAY (Star Weekly) AIRPORT WEST v TULLAMARINE Saturday 2:20pm @ Windy Hill AFTER a big season, the Essendon Ford Division 1 season will come to its conclusion this weekend. It will be a fitting end with the two best teams both making it through to the final match of the year. Since Round 4, Airport West and Tullamarine have occupied the top two spots and have overcome every challenge thrown at them. For the Eagles, this season was about building on a grand final appearance last year. They started slowly, but were able to still accumulate the wins, winning their first eight games of the year. That winning streak came to an end in Round 9 at the hand of Tullamarine. A draw with Taylors Lakes and a loss to Hillside were the only slip ups since. Their last two matches have both come against the Demons. Little can be taken out of the match in the final round of the home-and-away season, given nothing was on the line and the Demons rested more than half of their squad. The second semi final was a different story, though. The Eagles produced some of their best football and the Demons their worst. The end result was a 56-point win to the Eagles, earning them home team status for the grand final. For the Eagles, their strength seems to be their evenness. No player has been named more than eight times in the side s best players this year. Wingman Bior Malual has been named in the best the most, followed by Luke Ryan and Ronald Hackney. Tyson Young has continued on his form from last season and has kicked 56 goals this season. Alex Penaluna has been a good second option up forward, finding form in the back half of the season. The Demons were able to put the loss in the opening week of the finals behind them, as they accounted for Craigieburn in the prelim. Demons coach Dave Connell said it was one of their more even performances, with the Demons breaking Craigieburn late in the game. Russell Laurie was strong down back for the Demons with Jack Kennedy and Anthony Prestia, who returned from injury, both having good games. The win puts the Demons into the grand final for the third time in five years, showing the resilience the club has. The challenge for them is to take the next step. This year they have more depth than they ve had in recent years, with Connell not afraid to add to the list throughout the year. Like the Eagles, it has been an even spread across the board. Anthony Prestia has been named in the best players in seven of his 12 games, while Steven Vocale has also been named in the best on seven occasions. In front of goal, Ryan Pretty and Brad Allen have kicked 38 goals each. Speaking of Pretty, whether he plays will be one of the intriguing factors heading into the game. He missed the preliminary final through injury along with Joel Flanigan. Both will be in the mix this week, as would former Carlton player Anthony Franchina, who was dropped for the preliminary final. After having three one-sided results between the teams this season, here s hoping for a close decider. THE FOOTBALLER The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au 23 23

Kaine Hocking's Grand Final Five - Airport West AIRPORT West has advanced to its second successive Essendon Ford Division 1 Grand Final off the back of some brilliant individual performances from key players late in the year. EDFL Match of the Day radio analyst, Kaine Hocking, has revealed his top five Airport West players to watch in this upcoming grand final between the Eagles and Demons. 7. TYSON YOUNG (pictured right) The reigning Hutchison Medallist and one of the favourites to go back-to-back is arguably the best player in Essendon Ford Division 1. A key reason why is that as a combo mid/forward, he is a match-up nightmare. When forward, he can play tall or small but when pushing through midfield, we ve seen smaller opponents struggle to keep up with him. He also allows coach Geoff Maddern to play a smaller, more dangerous forward line that has multiple avenues to goal. When in the forward line, Tullamarine s Russell Laurie is the man that ll have his hands full. Young has kicked 185 goals in his 111 games but on this same stage against Glenroy last year, he didn t have a great day at the office, finishing with only one major. This is a massive game for the young star. 8. CLAYTON ROGERS Clayton Rogers is Airport West s spiritual leader. The 38-year-old centre half forward turned full back and is a rock inside the Eagles defensive 50. He's rarely beaten one-on-one and his second and third efforts set the example for his young team mates week in, week out. If Tullamarine s equal leading goal kicker Ryan Pretty gets up to play here, then expect Rogers to take that match-up. It ll be one of the most important individual duals on the ground. 37. BIOR MALUAL Bior Malual is another young star that is tall, quick and your typical two-way running wingman. Players that are lucky enough to have such physical attributes are invaluable in grand finals, and Malual can go back and play as a third man up but then also provide run and carry on the rebound. Tullamarine coach Dave Connell needs to make sure he pays close attention to Malual, because if he s allowed to roam free then he s the sort of player that ll catch everyone s eye and potentially walk away with the David McWilliam Medal. But his kicking efficiency needs to improve on the unique dimensions of Windy Hill. Daniel Devine was his opponent in the second semi, we ll see if Connell sticks with that here. 3. BRENDAN GODDEN Brendan Godden is a proven finals performer and as a flashy small forward/mid with equally flashly fluoro boots, he needs to be at his menacing best against the Demons. Around forward 50 marking contests he s dangerous front-and-centre but can also get you with his chasedown tackling ability if you re too slow to repel the ball back out. In the second semi, Godden s pace was a highlight and complemented the Eagles small forward brigade well, putting consistent pressure on Tullamarine s vaunted back six. 33. ALEX PENALUNA Alex Penaluna entered the finals in form, kicking 17 of his 40 goals for the year in the past month of footy. Whether he s in the forward line or in the ruck, he ll give you a contest every time. The fact he s kicked 40 majors for the year means he s a dangerous forward option for the Eagles to go to and hence, requires serious attention when down there. If he and Young are up forward together then it ll stretch Tullamarine s key defensive resources to their limits. Penaluna will also be important in terms of bringing Airport West s small forwards into the game in contested situations around goal. Kaine Hocking will be part of the live coverage of Airport West v Tullamarine from 2pm 5:30pm on 98.9 North West FM & Mixlr.com/edflfooty. 30 THE FOOTBALLER The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au

Kaine Hocking's Grand Final Five - Tullamarine TULLAMARINE is looking to finally take home some silverware in what will be its third Essendon Ford Division 1 Grand Final appearance since 2014. EDFL Match of the Day radio analyst Kaine Hocking gives us his top five players to keep an eye on in red and navy blue out on Windy Hill. 11. ANTHONY PRESTIA Recruited across from Essendon Doutta Stars in the summer, Anthony Prestia has been one of the most damaging forward/mids in Essendon Ford Division 1. Having him back in the line-up after missing the second semi will definitely help Dave Connell sleep a little easier at night during grand final week. Prestia s a goalkicking midfielder, having slotted 20 for the year and on five occasions, he s scored three or more within a single game, so he s a match-up headache for Airport West coach, Geoff Maddern. In the second semi against the Eagles, Tullamarine lost the midfield battle despite ruckman Mark Maric having a good day at the office, so having Prestia back is a huge boost for the Demons engine room. 4. DEAN BARTROP Dean Bartrop looked like he had his hands full with Tyson Young in the second semi two weeks ago. He will need to be switched on from the get-go if he gets the job on the dangerous Eagle again here. Bartrop needs to be able to push forward and try to hurt Young on the rebound, and if he s successful in doing so then he ll become an important player in the grand final for Tullamarine, as it ll test Young defensively. When Young rolls forward it s important Bartrop communicates well with his back six. If this match-up does eventuate then a lot will be riding on it for both sides. 6. JACK KENNEDY Tullamarine s big mid-season recruit has big-game experience on this very ground with Keilor two years ago and it showed in patches in the second semi against the Eagles. The Demons will be hoping for more of the same and perhaps a little bit more here. Kennedy gives Tullamarine some spark and aggression and his energy brings team mates into the game. He s a highly skilful player and could turn the game on its head in just five minutes if he gets hot. If his body is willing, then he might be a chance to collect the David McWilliam Medal if Tullamarine gets up. 25. RUSSELL LAURIE (pictured right) Could it be a fairy tale ending for one of Tullamarine s all-time club legends? Laurie holds the key to Tullamarine s back six and has been that man for some time, now. His job on Tyson Young a fortnight ago forced Geoff Maddern to push his star utility into the midfield for the majority of the game. But with Alex Penaluna getting off the leash and snagging five in the second semi, expect Laurie to get that job when the Airport West big man pushes forward. 18. KANE MULVANEY Rarely sighted two weeks ago, this classy left footer will be out to make amends against the same opposition at Windy Hill. The 23-year-old midfielder provides a vital link for the Demons and if they want to lift the premiership cup at about 5pm then its important the ball gets into his hands and onto his trusty left boot when penetrating forward 50. The likes of Ryan Pretty, Brad Allen and Joel Flanigan will be licking their lips if they see number 18 streaming forward. Kaine Hocking will be part of the live coverage of Airport West v Tullamarine from 2pm 5:30pm on 98.9 North West FM & Mixlr.com/edflfooty. 32 THE FOOTBALLER The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au

Preview Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 By JULIA MONTESANO PRELIMINARY FINAL - NORTHERN SAINTS v EAST SUNBURY Saturday 2:15pm @ Coburg City Oval BOTH the Northern Saints and East Sunbury find themselves at Coburg City Oval playing off for a spot in the Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 Grand Final in some unexpected circumstances. After a stellar season, the minor premier Northern Saints were expected to get the job done against late-season bolter, Roxburgh Park last week. Braddy played out of their skins to secure a memorable 26-point victory. If the Thunder wins this one, it will be a historymaking grand final against Roxburgh Park while for the Saints, it will be a chance to not only get revenge on the Magpies, but do it in style by holding up the premiership cup. In good conditions with the two most exciting offensive units of the division going head-tohead, expect this to be a preliminary final for the ages. But their inaccuracy in front of the sticks troubled them for most of the game and the far more accurate Magpies took full advantage, forcing the Northern Saints back to Coburg City Oval for a cut-throat prelim against finals debutant, East Sunbury. Despite coming up against the in-form Moonee Valley, the Thunder s smalls used the wet surface of Keilor s Joe Brown Oval to their advantage, running over the top of the Fog s bigger bodies and knocking them out of the finals series. However, the forecast for bright blue skies on Saturday could advantage the attacking Saints outfit, who would be keen to complete their impressive season with a September 15 date at Windy Hill. But good weather might suit the Thunder as well, coming off a stirring win against the Fog where the likes of Brad Bernacki and Jorden THE FOOTBALLER The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au 37 37
