Game #7, Home Game #3 Wednesday, April 12th Durham Bulls Athletic Park 7:05 PM Charlotte Knights (4-2 / 2nd / 1 GB) vs. Durham Bulls (5-1 / 1st) RHP Carson Fulmer (1-0, 3.00) vs. RHP Chih-Wei Hu (0-0, 1.80) Tonight s Game The battle for first place in the International League South Division continues tonight in Durham, as the Bulls look to make it three straight wins against the Charlotte Knights in game three of their four game series. With victories in the first two games of the set, the Bulls have overtaken the Knights for sole possession of first place for the first time this season. Last Night The Durham Bulls built a three run lead over the middle innings and held on for dear life Tuesday night against Charlotte, as the Knights plated two runs in the ninth before the potential tying tally was thrown out at the plate to end the game and give the Bulls a 4-3 win at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Center fielder Johnny Field led off the home half of the first inning with a solo home run for the second time already this season, while catcher Mike Marjama launched a 2-run shot for his first long ball of the year to pace the offense. Starting pitcher Jake Faria (1-0) earned the win with five solid innings, while reliever Neil Wagner recorded his first save of the season when the Bulls escaped with the win in the ninth. Start the Game with a Bang Bulls leadoff batter Johnny Field has already gone deep to start a game twice this season after leading off the bottom of the first with a solo home run against Charlotte Tuesday night. The 25-year-old outfielder also homered to leadoff the top of the first on Opening Night in Gwinnett on 4/7. The Home Run Giveth & the Home Run Taketh The Bulls are currently tied for the International League lead with nine home runs on the early season, with Durham clubbing at least one long ball in five of their six games this season. The Bulls pitching staff has also been prone to giving up the long ball however, with the staff s eight homers allowed ranking third in the IL. The Ying & Yang of Strikeouts & Walks The Durham pitching staff racked up 11 more strikeouts Tuesday night vs. Charlotte to raise their league-leadig total to 66. The Bulls hurlers have also been prone to walk batters this season however, with last night s five free passes giving the team 28 walks on the season, the second most in the IL 5-1 for the First Time Since...2016 Tuesday night s win pushed the Bulls record to 5-1 at the start of the season, the exact same record they had at this point in 2016. In fact, Durham has started at least 5-1 five times in the past 10 seasons ( 17, 16, 13, 09, 06). No Fear to Steal Opponents have had alot of success stealing bases against Durham thus far this year. In fact Bulls catchers have yet to throw out a single runner on the baes, with Willy Garcia s swiped bag Tuesday night raising the total to 6 for 6. You Know Hu RHP Chih-Wei Hu will make his second start of the season and his first appearance at the DBAP tonight. Fans might recognize the Taiwan-born hurler however, as he made a spot start for the Bulls last year, and also made a spot start against Durham back in 2015 while a member of the Twins organization. That Really Escalated Quickly The Chicago White Sox minor league system pulled off a dramatic turnaround during the offseason, vaulting from a bottom 10 system to the No. 3 system according to MLB. com. The trades of Chris Sale and Adam Eaton brought in Top 100 prospects Yoan Moncada (No. 2), Lucas Giolito (No. 11), and Michael Kopech (No. 16), with both Moncada and Giolito playing with the Knights. That new duo is joined by fellow Top 100 prospects Reynaldo Lopez (No. 46) and Carson Fulmer (No. 71), as well as ChiSox Top 30 prospects Zach Burdi (No. 7), and Adam Engel (No. 16). Top Prospects in Durham The Bulls Opening Day roster includes nine of the Top 30 prospects for Tampa Bay on the squad, as well as three listed among the Top 100 prospects in MiLB. The top-flight talent includes Willy Adames (Rays No. 1, MiLB No. 21), Jake Bauers (#4/#76), Casey Gillaspie (#5/#100), Chih-Wei Hu (#8), Jake Faria (#9), Jaime Schultz (#15), Ryne Stanek (#16), Taylor Guerrieri (#18), and Ryan Yarbrough (#24). The First of Many The in-state rivalry between Durham and Charlotte will once again be well-tested in 2017 as the two teams play each other 21 times, the second most frequent opponent for the Bulls. The games are spread evenly throughout the calendar, with at least one series in each of the five full months on the schedule. Third Time s The Charm Manager Jared Sandberg returns to Durham for his third year at the helm of the Bulls in 2017. The 39-year-old former big leaguer has been unable to get the Bulls to the postseason in his first two years as manager, finishing with a 74-40 mark in 2016 before going 64-80 in 2017. The Bulls have never gone three straight years without making the playoffs since joining the International League in 1998. 17 BY THE NUMBERS Place in Southern Div 1st Games Behind (Division) 0.0 Games Behind (WC) 0.0 Current Streak W2 Home 2-0 Road 3-1 vs. RHP (starter) 4-1 vs. LHP (starter) 1-0 vs. South Division 4-1 vs. North Division 0-0 vs. West Division 0-0 Day 0-1 Night (5:05+) 5-0 Extra Innings 1-0 Shutouts 0-0 One-Run Games 1-0 Three or fewer 3-1 Four or more 1-0 Scoring First 4-0 Opponent Scores First 1-1 Leading after 6 5-0 Trailing after 6 0-1 Tied after 6 0-0 Series Openers 2-0 Series Finales 0-1 Rubber Matches 0-0 Doubleheader Games 0-0 Sweep/Swept/Split 0/0/0 2-Game Series (W/L/T) 0/0/0 3-Game Series 0-0 Sweep/Swept 0/0 4-Game Series (W/L/T) 1/0/0 Sweep/Swept 0/0 5-Game Series 0-0 Sweep/Swept 0/0 Monday 1-0 Tuesday 1-0 Wednesday 0-0 Thursday 1-0 Friday 1-0 Saturday 1-0 Sunday 0-1 April 5-1 May 0-0 June 0-0 July 0-0 August 0-0 September 0-0 2017 BULLS vs. KNIGHTS Overall 2-0 DBAP 0-0 BB&T Ballpark 0-0 2016 Head-to-Head 13-11 BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,384-6,098 International League 1,446-1,274 Upcoming Schedule and Probable Starters Date Opponent Durham Starter Opponent Starter time Thursday, April 13th vs. Charlotee Knights RHP Taylor Guerrieri (1-0, 4.76) RHP Lucas Giolito (0-0, 8.31) 7:05 pm Friday, April 14th vs. Gwinnett Braves LHP Ryan Yarbrough (0-, 6.00) RHP Lucas Sims (1-0, 1.80) 7:05 pm Saturday, April 15th vs. Gwinnett Braves RHP Chase Whitley (0-0, 3.00) RHP Luke Jackson (0-1, 6.23) 6:35 pm Sunday, April 16th vs. Gwinnett Braves RHP Jake Faria (1-0, 3.86) RHP Aaron Blair (1-1, 7.88) 5:05 pm Today s game will be broadcast on Buzz Sports Radio: 96.5 FM in Durham and 99.3 FM in Raleigh
