NOTES: The Seawolves will look to qualify a full team 12 participants to the NCAA Skiing Championships in March with the RMISA/Western Regional Championships this weekend... at last year s conference championship, the Seawolves finished fifth with 747 points, just two points shy of fourth-place Denver (749)... currently, the Seawolves are fourth in the RMISA regular season team standings with 2,912 points, trailing third-place DU (3,074)... the UAA women s Nordic team leads the RMISA with 902 points over second-place Utah (839). See complete RMISA standings on pages 4 and 5. UP NEXT: Qualified individuals will return to Big Sky and Bozeman, Mont., for the 2012 NCAA Skiing Championships on March 7-10. SEAWOLF BITES: For the first time since the 2009 season, the Seawolves hosted races in Alaska, Feb. 4-11... the last time UAA hosted, it posted a program-best 1st-place team finish at the Seawolf Invite and third place at the Alaska Anchorage Invite... after claiming the Alaska Nordic Cup for the first time since 2006, UAA has posted third-place team finishes at the Colorado Invite and Denver Invite, respectively... in between 2009 and this season, UAA had only one other 3rd-place team finish, recorded at the New Mexico Invite in 2011... the Seawolves also finished fourth at the UAA Invite, Feb. 4-10. SKIER NOTES: Individually, the trio of Jaime Bronga, Laura Rombach and Steffi Hiemer are producing a stellar senior campaign on the cross country courses... Bronga, from Anchorage, has posted two individual RMISA wins and two runner-up performances without finishing lower than fourth all season... Rombach has three top-five showings, while Hiemer has registered two top-five finishes, helping the Seawolves to rallies in the team standings multiple times... on the men s side, sophomore Lukas Ebner leads the UAA Nordic team with 315 points in the RMISA MVP points, while junior Andreas Adde paces the men s Alpine team with 301 points... Parker is 9th in the standings with 332 points to lead the UAA women s Alpine squad. ALASKA ANCHORAGE INVITE RECAP: The Seawolves finished 4th at the UAA Invite with 718 points... the women s Nordic team paced UAA, furnishing a combined 212 points in the classical and freestyle races... the Seawolves were led by senior Jaime Bronga (Anchorage) in both races, finishing fourth in each... the senior tandem of Steffi Hiemer and Laura Rombach helped Bronga, finishing no less than 9th in both races... the lone male to post a top-10 finish was junior All-American Andreas Adde in the giant slalom, while rookie Anais Urbain and Vanessa Berther were each in the top-10 in the GS. SEAWOLF INVITE RECAP: The Seawolves concluded their hosting duties with a fifth-place finish at the Seawolf Invitational, which was held Feb. 9-11... UAA posted 693 points, three points ahead of sixth-place Montana State (690)... leading UAA was the women s Nordic team in the classical race with 110 points... even without UAA s third racer, senior Steffi Hiemer, the Seawolves won the classical with a runner-up finish by senior Jaime Bronga and a fourth-place finish by senior Laura Rombach... posting a team-high 115 points ADDE ROMBACH EBNER at the invite was the women s Alpine squad in the giant slalom... freshman Anais Urbain earned her first podium finish in second, while senior All- American Alex Parker was 7th and freshman Vanessa Berther was 9th... sophomore Lukas Ebner added two 9th-place finishes as well. DENVER INVITE RECAP: Led by a dominating performance from its women s Nordic squad, the UAA ski team roared back to finish third place in the team standings on the fourth and final day of the Denver Invite (Jan. 21)... senior Jaime Bronga continued her impressive early season performance by winning the women s 10K freestyle race in 36:59.5... fellow senior Laura Romback was third and senior Steffi Hiemer finished fifth, giving the UAA women their second straight day with all three scorers in the top six... the UAA HIEMER Alpine team competed its portion of the Denver Invitational on Jan. 14-15... the Seawolves posted successful marks in the giant slalom with junior Andreas Adde leading the men and senior Alex Parker leading the women each finished sixth in their respective races... Parker led both the men and women in the slalom, finishing with a team-high 13th place... rookies Anais Urbain and Niko Harmanen also registered top-10 finishes in the PARKER GS. Sparky Anderson HEADCoach Anderson commences his first season as head coach in 2012 after serving as head Alpine coach for five years. Anderson has coached two NCAA Champions in Andreas Adde (slalom) in 2010 and Aurore de Maulmont (giant slalom) in 2002. Before UAA, Anderson worked as the program director for the Alyeska Ski Club in Girdwoood for seven years. Prior to coming to Alaska, he was the head ski coach at Brown University in Rhode Island from 1996-2000. A 1991 graduate of the University of Nevada, Anderson earned four letters with the Wolf Pack, serving as team captain his senior season. In addition to his international experience, he holds USSA s highest level of coach s certification and currently serves as the Alaska Division s USSA coaches education clinician. Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Nationally known as the strongest and most competitive conference in collegiate skiing, the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association is rich in tradition, history and success. The nine-member conference is comprised of Alaska Anchorage, Colorado, Denver, Montana State, New Mexico, and Utah, while Wyoming only competes in the Nordic races, and Colorado Mountain College and Westminster each field just a Alpine team. RMISA schools have claimed 15 of the last 16 NCAA titles.
