CHAPTER 1 Yuzuru Hanyu 1 2 Yuzuru Hanyu was the gold medalist in men s figure skating at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia. He was the first Japanese skater to take the gold in this event. His achievement is quite remarkable for a variety of reasons. Hanyu became the first Japanese skater to win any medal in the men s singles competition since Daisuke Takahashi brought home the bronze in 2010. He was also the only Japanese competitor to win a gold medal in skating since Shizuka Arakawa captured the gold in the 2006 women s competition. And at the time of the Sochi Olympic Games, Hanyu, who was 19 years old, became the second-youngest man to win the gold in men s figure skating. His triumph was due in large part to the fantastic short program (SP) 5 10 9

15 20 25 30 35 Hanyu had performed on the day before the finals, when he achieved a world-record score of 101.45 points, opening up a nearly four-point lead. He demonstrated the kind of mental and physical grit that characterizes all great athletes. Hanyu said, When I saw the Japanese flag, Hinomaru, being raised on the podium and I was singing the national anthem, Kimigayo, I was very proud as a Japanese. Following his victory at Sochi, Hanyu claimed his first world championship title at Saitama, becoming the first man since 2002 to win both an Olympic title and a world title in the same year. Some have called Hanyu s performance a living work of art. Hanyu was born in 1994 in Sendai. He suffered from asthma as a child, and even now he sometimes has asthma attacks. But by strengthening his heart and lungs, he has largely overcome this disabling condition. His success has been a great encouragement to children who suffer from the same disease. Hanyu was deeply affected when the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami struck the Sendai area, causing widespread devastation and suffering. When the 9.0 magnitude tremor occurred, Hanyu was forced to flee with his skates to practice in another arena. He has said that he almost felt like giving up skating, but instead, he rededicated himself and his efforts, especially for the Olympics, to all the people who were affected by the tragedy. His victory at Sochi was especially inspiring to the people of the Tohoku region. At the time, Hanyu declared, I hope that my gold medal accelerates the recovery of the damaged areas.
