He bought the winning ticket at a Vessel Safety Check set up with the help of the Pro Bait store of Port Huron and our Vessel Check team. By doing the Raffle it helped get our Squadron out into the public and let them know what we do for the Boating Public It is a sad time for us at the Squadron we have lost a close and dear friend P/C James B McDonald passed away after a long illness. Jim was commander in 1984 and was the Treasurer for over 25 years. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. He will truly be missed. v Splash! Page 3 Lt/C Richard A. Haas, AP Educational Officer With only about a month and a half left of the boating season it is time to begin thinking about what you will be doing during the off-season. Some will be playing catchup on home projects while others will be planning going out of date, items in your first aid kit that may need to be replaced and other dated items. There is another activity you can do. Increase your boating knowledge. You can do this in a couple of ways: taking one of our classes or by checking out one of our seminars or by taking a course self-study. Starting in the winter and spring we will be offering three classes: Jr. Navigation, Seamanship, and Cruise Planning. More information will be put out on these classes as the time draws closer. Over the next couple of months I will put together a list of all the Seminars and course materials we have on hand. I will be more than happy to sign out any of our materials to our members to give you the opportunity to improve your knowledge and skills. In addition to that list I will put together a list of all the classes and seminars available USPS. If during the offboating season you would like to take any of the classes as a self- way possible, and proctor the exam for you. One final thought: you are more than welcome to sit in on any of the classes we offer. It could give you an opportunity to pick up little tidbits of information to make your boating more enjoyable. The other side is that the experience you have can be passed along to our students to make their boating more enjoyable and safer. Lt/C Richard A. Haas, AP dhaasphps@comcast.net

Splash! Page 5 Safety Report From BoatSafe.com If you want your PFD to take good care of you -- take good care of your PFD. Follow these tips and your PFD will last for many years. Don't alter your PFD to make it fit. Buy another that does fit. Don't put heavy objects on it or use it for a knee pad or fender, it can lose buoyancy when crushed. Don't leave your PFD on board for long periods when the boat is not in use, the heat can degrade its flotation. Don't dry your PFD in a dryer, on a radiator, heater, or any other direct heat source. This can degrade and damage the buoyancy material. Don't let your PFD lie out in the sun when the boat is not in use. Sunlight weakens some synthetic fabrics very rapidly. Don't leave your PFD onboard for long periods of time when the boat is not in use, the heat can degrade its flotation. Don't dry your PFD in a dryer, on a radiator, heater or any other direct heat source. This can degrade and damage the buoyancy material. Do let your PFD drip dry thoroughly before putting it away. If your PFD has been in salt water, rinse it thoroughly with fresh water. Do stow your PFD in a well ventilated place. Do check your PFD for rips, tears, and holes and make sure seams, straps and hardware are okay. Do make sure there is no sign of water-logging, mildew odor, or shrinkage of the buoyant materials. Do check and replace spent cartridges in inflatable PFDs. Do put your name on your PFD if you are the only wearer. It will keep you from mistakenly putting on one that is not sized for you. Do test all your PFDs at the start of every boating season. Do discard old PFDs by cutting them up and properly disposing of them. You don't want someone finding one you discarded and using it. Do give your PFDs all the above checks, plus check their buoyancy in the water, at least twice a year. PFDs can save your life -- Don't leave shore without one. Respectfully, P/C Mark S. Krainbrink, AP
