Aze ee ahn ah Foo kwah Bay SERIES HISTORY -- TIGERS VS ECU This is the 24th meeting between Memphis and East Carolina, but the first in two years. The two schools were both members of Conference USA until Memphis left for the American Athletic Conference last season. ECU is in its first year in the league. The Tigers lead the overall series 12-11, but lost the last meeting in Greenville, 69-52. Memphis won the last contest played in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse between the two teams, 66-56. FUQUA-BEY APPROACHING 500TH CAREER REBOUND Asia Fuqua-Bey is just 6 rebounds shy of her 500th career rebound heading in to the ECU game. Whenever she gets to 500 rebounds, she will join the 500-500 club, becoming just the 25th player in school history to have 500 career points and 500 career rebounds. She picked up her 500th career point against UALR and is now 28 points shy of her 600th point heading in to the Temple game. DEFENSE STANDING STRONG FOR TIGERS Memphis is struggling to score the ball as of late, but the defense is keeping the Tigers in games. Memphis ranks 98th in the country with 60.5 ppg allowed per outing and the Tigers are on the right side of the turnover battle, with a +2.31 turnover margin, rankings 103rd of 343 DI teams in the NCAA. The Tigers offense ranks 255th out of 343 teams in the NCAA, scoring an average of 60.7 ppg on the season. Part of the change in points may be the team s fast break. Memphis has gone two straight games without scoring a fast break bucket heading in to the Sunday contest with East Carolina. HEARN MOVES TO 18TH ON TIGER SCOR- ING CHART Junior guard Ariel Hearn moved to 18th on the Memphis career scoring chart against Temple. She heads in to the game vs. East Carolina with 1,197 career points. She is 102 points shy of moving to 17th all-time, where Victoria Crawford s mark (2002-05) of 1,299 points sits. WILDER-COCHRAN ADDS ANOTHER MULTI- STEAL GAME Sophomore guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran serves as the Tigers primary on-ball defender and had a strong day defensively, Wednesday at USF. She SERIES HISTORY WITH ECU W - 12 L - 11 2001-02 W Memphis 83-62 2002-03 L Greenville 87-76 2003-04 W Memphis 79-60 2004-05 W Memphis 79-60 2004-05 L Greenville 60-47 2004-05 W Neutral 76-67 2005-06 L Memphis 81-68 2005-06 L Greenville 74-54 2006-07 L Memphis 69-57 2006-07 L Greenville 79-57 2007-08 W Memphis 69-50 2007-08 W Greenville 61-59 2008-09 L Greenville 83-66 2008-09 W Memphis 74-68 2009-10 L Greenville 76-59 2009-10 L Memphis 77-76 ot 2009-10 L Neutral 73-66 2010-11 W Greenville 87-75 2010-11 W Memphis 83-70 2011-12 W Memphis 61-59 2011-12 W Greenville 69-56 2012-13 W Memphis 66-56 2012-13 L Greenville 69-52 UM Record in Memphis: 8-3 UM Record in Greenville: 3-7 UM Record at Neutral: 1-1 McFerrin vs East Carolina: 8-5 Longest UM Win Streak: 5 (2010-2013) Longest ECU Win Streak: 4 (2005-07) grabbed four steals in the loss, her fifth multi-steal game of the season and her second in as many conference games. Memphis is waiting for the sophomore to break through on the other side of the ball. She is 2-for-14 in the last three games, including an 0-for-3 stretch in the conference opener against Temple in our last game at the Fieldhouse. HEARN DOUBLE-DIGIT STREAK SNAPPED Ariel Hearn had scored double-digit points in 10 straight games heading in to the conference road opener at USF. But the junior was held to her lowest scoring total of the season in the loss at USF as she battled foul trouble, finishing with five points. The five points is the fewest scored by Hearn since a three-point outing last season against SMU..She has scored 20 or more points in 20 career games at Memphis. DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR WRIGHT With the Tigers guards struggling to score, Memphis looked to its posts for some offensive help in the Temple game. Junior forward Brianna Wright stepped up with a season-best 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting. She also added 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and her fifth double-digit rebounding night. Tiger Double-Doubles Brianna Wright vs. Missouri State, 11 pts, 16 reb (11/14/14) Courtney Powell vs. Samford, 11 pts, 11 reb (11/16/14) Mooriah Rowser vs. SIU, 13 pts, 10 reb (11/26/14) Brianna Wright vs. UALR, 14 pts, 16 reb (11/29/14) Asia Fuqua-Bey vs. MVSU, 12 pts, 12 reb (12/19/14) Brianna Wright vs. Temple, 18 pts, 14 reb. (12/28/14) HOLMES SEEING MORE TIME Freshman guard Amber Holmes is starting to see more time at the point, giving Breigha Wilder-Cochran a breather and allowing Hearn to move over to the two guard spot. In the last three games, she has a pair of assists and had her first career multi-steal game in the win over Mississippi Valley State in the final non-conference contest of the regular season. WRIGHT-SIZING THE OFFENSE At the start of the season, Melissa McFerrin said Brianna Wright had double-double potential in every game. The junior college transfer has grabbed double-digit rebounds six times in the first 13 games, but was not getting many post feeds out of the Tigers offensive sets in the early going. That is something the Tigers are trying to remedy now that conference play has started. After getting double-digit shots off just once in 11 non-conference games, she has had double-digit tries in each of the conference contests so far. She was 8-for-13 from the floor against Temple in the opener, and was 4-for-10 while working against the size of USF on the road. She just missed her seventh double-digit rebounding game of the season in the USF loss, finishing with nine boards. ROWSER BACK IN THE FLOW Redshirt sophomore Mooriah Rowser had a quick start to the season, scoring 21 points in the opener and scoring double-digit points in the first five games. But in the next five games, she hit double digit points just once, and was held scoreless for the first time of the season in the loss at George Washington as team s adjust their scouting reports to a healthy Rowser (she missed all but three games of her freshman year to a knee injury and was not fully recovered last season, despite playing in all 31 games). She has now scored double-digit points in three straight games for Memphis heading in to Sunday s contest against East Carolina. MEMPHIS FINISHES FALL SEMESTER IN A FLOURISH IN THE CLASSROOM The Tigers had a strong finish to the fall semester. PAGE 4 the semester (Cheyenne Creighton, Asianna Fuqua- Bey, Ariel Hearn, Amber Holmes, Mooriah Rowser, Brianna Wright) and freshman Amber Holmes posted the highest team GPA of the fall at 3.87. The Tigers fall team GPA was 3.087. CUTTING DOWN ON TURNS Memphis is struggling with turnovers in the early part of the season. Only three Tigers have more assists than turnovers (Breigha Wilder-Cochran 28 vs. 24 Amber Holmes 5 vs. 4 and Taylor Williams 15 vs. 13). For the first time in her three-year career, Ariel Hearn has more turnovers than assists (37 vs. 41) and the Tigers starting posts (Fuqua-Bey and Wright) have combined for 32 assists against 57 turnovers). The Tigers rank No. 223 in the country in assist-toturnover ratio (0.7) and don t have anyone listed in the top 250 in the country in assists per game or assists turnover ratio. GETTING OVER THE HUMP IN CLOSE GAMES A young Tiger squad is still learning how to pull out close games. Of the Tigers seven losses, five have been by single digits, including the one-point loss to Temple on Sunday. Those five Memphis single digit losses have added up to a combined 23 points. Memphis is 2-5 in single-digit games. The Tigers last win by single digits? The 62-61 win over Central Michigan. FUQUA-BEY USING FREE THROW LINE TO ELEVATE SCORING THREAT Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey has worked hard to improve at the free-throw line. As a freshman, the Chicago native shot 54.3 percent at the stripe. This season, she is shooting 83.9 percent. Fuqua-Bey At the Line 2012-13... 50-92 (54.3) 2013-14... 60-108 (55.6) 2014-15... 26-31 (83.9) DOUBLE DOUBLE-DIGIT REBOUNDING The Temple game marked the second time this year that the Tigers have had two players post double-digit rebounds. In addition to Brianna Wright s 14 rebounds against Temple, Asianna Fuqua-Bey added 12 rebounds, her second consecutive double-digit rebounding night of the season. The last time Memphis had two players with double digit rebounds before the Temple game? Another game where Memphis had a halftime lead, but lost -- Minnesota. ANOTHER NON-CONFERENCE MARK OVER.500 FOR MCFERRIN S TIGERS Memphis has never finished under.500 in league play since McFerrin took over prior to the 2008-09 season (including post-season tournaments) and the Tigers took a step toward making that a seventh straight occurrence by closing regular season nonconference play with a 6-5 mark. Memphis Non-Conference Record Under McFerrin 2014-15: 6-5 2013-14: 7-6 2012-13: 9-7 2011-12: 12-5 2010-11: 13-5 2009-10: 10-8 2008-09: 7-7 FUQUA-BEY LOOKING FOR DOUBLE DIGITS Asianna Fuqua-Bey has worked hard on becoming a force for the Tigers offense. In the last five games, she has been Memphis second-leading scorer with 10.4 ppg and is 21-for-40 (52.5) from the field. She also has the second-highest number of free-throw attempts in the last five games, knocking down 10-of- 13 shots (76.9) to help Memphis to a 4-1 record in its last five outings of the non-conference slate. WILDER-COCHRAN NAMED TO HONOR ROLL Sophomore point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran was named to the American weekly honor roll after the win at Georgetown. Wilder-Cochran scored 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting and tied a career-high with five steals for the second time in three games. She is the second Tiger this season to earn a spot on the weekly honor roll, joining Mooriah Rowser. CAREER NIGHT FOR HEARN Junior guard Ariel Hearn scored a career-best 28 points in the loss to Minnesota. Hearn tied a school record by knocking down seven three-point field goals in that game. She now shares that record with former Tigers Alex Winchell (Feb. 20, 2011) and LaTonya Johnson (Jan. 17, 1997). With the seven makes from three-point range on Sunday, Hearn now has 108 career three-point field goals made. She needs 23 more to move up to a tie for 8th on the all-time career list at Memphis. The 28-point effort give Hearn 1,058 career points. That moved her past Terri Galloway (1,046 points) and to 21st in career scoring at Memphis. She needs 13 more points to tie Devin Necaise (1,071) for 20th all-time in scoring. DOUBLE DIGIT REBOUNDS FOR PAIR OF TIGERS Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Brianna Wright each grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss to Minnesota. Fuqua-Bey had 10 offensive rebounds in the game on Sunday, becoming just the ninth player in school history to grab 10 offensive rebounds in a game. She is the first Tiger since Jasmine Lee to grab double-digit offensive rebounds in a game. Double Digit Offensive Rebounds in a Game 12 - Diana Gray vs. McNeese State, Dec. 2, 1989 12 - Glynetha Davis vs. Virginia Tech, Jan. 11, 1989 11 - Jasmine Lee vs. Chattanooga, Mar. 15, 2012 11 - Keeta Matthews vs. DePaul, Feb. 19, 1995 11 - Keeta Matthews vs. UT Martin, Dec. 1, 1993 10 - Asia Fuqua-Bey vs. Minnesota, Nov. 23, 2014 10 - Jasmine Lee vs. East Carolina, Jan. 15, 2012 10 - Paris Leonard vs. Austin Peay, Nov. 25, 2005 10 - Connie Hibbler vs. Florida State, Jan. 26, 1987 ROWSER NAMED TO AMERICAN HONOR ROLL Redshirt sophomore guard Mooriah Rowser was named to the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll after leading Memphis in scoring last week in a pair of wins. Rowser is averaging 19.5 ppg and is shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range in the early going. She is also the team s leading free-throw attempts leader, going 12-for-15 (80.0 percent) in the early going. HEARN HITS 1,000TH CAREER POINT AND 100TH CAREER TRIPLE Junior guard Ariel Hearn opened her 2014-15 scoring line with a pair of three point field goals in the first half against Missouri State. The second triple pushed her past the 1,000 career point mark, making her the 23rd player in school history to score a grand or more. She added a pair of threes in the second half, which gave her the 100th triple of her three-year Tiger career. She is just the ninth player in school history to connect on 100 career threes. Getting to her 1,000th career point in her 64th career game means that Hearn was the fifth-fastest in Memphis history to get to the 1,000 career point mark. She tied the mark set by Tamika Whitmore, who went on to become the second Memphis women s basketball player drafted in to the WNBA, earning WNBA All-Star honors while she played in Indiana.
