Aze ee ahn ah Foo kwah Bay Houston. The Tigers have a slight edge in the overall series, 14-13, but Houston won the last meeting, 73-67, eliminating the Tigers from the American Athletic Conference tournament last season. That meeting in the conference tournament last year was the third of the season between the two teams. Memphis had swept the regular season series with the Cougars, including a 48-40 win at home and a 55-45 win in Houston before the conference tournament game. In the last meeting, Cougar s guard Marche Amerson kept driving to the rim, drawing Tiger fouls. Amerson finished with 24 points in the win, including a 14-for-23 stretch from the free-throw line. She is back for Houston again this year, averaging 8.7 ppg. Also back, is Jessieka Palmer. Palmer hit two threepoint field goals off the bench in the last meeting with Memphis and is currently Houston s leading scorer at 10.0 ppg. COMING OFF BYE DATE & LOOKING TO GET OFFENSE BACK ON TRACK Memphis is coming in to Saturday afternoon s game off their mid-week bye. Houston hosted USF on Wednesday. Both teams are looking to find some offense. In the last two Memphis games, the Tigers have scored an average of 40.0 points, going 1-1 in that stretch. Memphis team scoring average on the season has now dropped below 60 points per game (59.3). Houston is also averaging below 60 points per game, at 56.3. Both teams have just one player averaging double digits on the season. Ariel Hearn leads Memphis with 15.4 ppg, while Jessieka Palmer leads the Cougars with 10.0 ppg. The Cougars are looking for someone else to step up with Palmer in double digit scoring to snap a fourgame losing streak, and have already gotten one road win in conference play, winning at SMU, 63-45. TAKING CARE OF THE BASKETBALL In the last five games, Memphis has struggled to score. Part of that has been losing possessions to turnovers. Memphis has given up 96 turnovers in the last five games (19.2/game). Only freshman Amber Holmes has more assists than turnovers in that five game stretch (4 assists, 3 turnovers), but she has played an average of 6.8 minutes a game in that stretch. EARNING TRIPS TO THE LINE In the last five games, the Tigers have given their opponents a lot of scoring opportunities with the clock stopped. Tiger opponents have attempted 98 free-throws in the last five games (hitting 74.5 percent), while Memphis has attempted just 82 (hitting just 54.9 percent). WILDER-COCHRAN RETURNS TO LINEUP Sophomore point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran returned to Memphis lineup after missing three games with a hand injury suffered in the loss at USF on New Year s Eve. In the loss at East Carolina, she put her first double-digit scoring night of the conference slate in the books, finishing with 10 points. But Wilder-Cochran also attempted a career-high 13 shots in that game, going 3-for-13 from the floor and 1-for-3 from threepoint range. She was also 3-for-5 from the free-throw line. DEFENSE KEEPING MEMPHIS IN IT With the Memphis offense slowing down, it has come down to the Tiger defense to keep the team in games. In the last five games, Memphis is allowing opponents to shoot just 36.4 percent from the floor and 28.0 percent from three-point range. HEARN 26 POINTS FROM 17TH IN CAREER SCORING Ariel Hearn is just 26 points from moving in to a tie for 17th in the Memphis career record book. Victoria Crawford (2002-2006) s mark of 1,299 points is currently the 17th-best career scoring mark. She enters the first match-up with Houston with 1,273 points. WRIGHT OFFSETS LOW SCORING NIGHT Brianna Wright posted her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 14 rebounds in the win over Cincinnati. Wright s six consecutive points in the second half were much-needed for Memphis. The 41 points the Tigers scored in the win over Cincinnati were the fewest-ever scored by Memphis in a victory. That 41 point mark was just two points from the previous lowest-total points in a win -- 43 in a 43-26 win over Murray State in the 1972-73 season. Wright s 14 rebounds in the low-scoring win was her seventh double-digit rebounding effort of the season. BUILDING OFF TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE SLATE Memphis has a 20-win season and a post-season bid as a team goal this year. And the Tigers have been well-tested to date, having already faced nine teams in the top 100 in the latest NCAA RPI Report. In all, Memphis will play 12 games this season against teams currently ranked in the top 100. RPI... Team 6...Connecticut (2 games) 16...at George Washington (L, 63-44) 21...at USF (L, 72-39, 1 game left) 28... Minnesota (L, 68-62) 41... Tulane (1 game) 48... Central Michigan (W, 62-61) FUQUA-BEY NAMED TO WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey was named to the American s weekly honor roll after back-toback double-digit games on the road last week. That marked her fifth and sixth double-digit games this year and just the second time this season she has strung together back-to-back double-digit outings. Her 18 points in the loss at Tulsa was a season-best and missed her career high by just three points. She was 9-for-11 from the field (shooting 81.8 percent) and upped her scoring average to 9.0 ppg for the season. She also added seven rebounds, including five off the offensive glass, in the loss. She has scored double digit points in three straight games one time before (last season). Fuqua-Bey is the fourth different Tiger to earn a weekly honor roll mention this season (Ariel Hearn, Breigha Wilder-Cochran, Mooriah Rowser). LEARNING TO WIN CLOSE GAMES A young Tiger squad is still learning how to pull out close games. Of the Tigers nine losses, five have been by single digits, including the one-point loss to Temple in the conference opener. Those five Memphis single digit losses have added up to a combined 23 points. Memphis is 5-5 in single-digit games following the three point win over Cincinnati in the Tigers last home game. BEYOND THE ARC In the Tigers first two games of the season, five different players (Hearn, Rowser, Williams, Creighton and Wilder-Cochran) landed a three-point field goal. So imagine the Tiger coaching staff s surprise to be heading in to game 19 of the season and have just one player with double-digit three point field goals made (Hearn with 38). PAGE 4 Memphis did not hit a single three-point field goal in the win over Cincinnati and was 2-for-13 (15.4 percent) from beyond the arc in the road loss at East Carolina. Ariel Hearn is the lone Tiger to have double-digit makes from beyond the arc. She is actually eighth in the Memphis career record book with 134 career three-point field goals made, needing just four more to move to seventh all-time. In conference-only games, the Tigers rank last in the American Athletic Conference with 2.9 threepoint field goals made per conference game. They are 10th out of 11 teams in the league in overall threepoint field goals made per game (4.1). HEARN NAMED TO AMERICAN WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Junior guard Ariel Hearn was named to the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll after scoring 26 points in the overtime win over East Carolina. Hearn passed the 1,200 career point mark in the ECU win and her 26 point effort was her 21st career 20-point game. It was her first 20-plus point game since scoring 20 or more in three straight games (Minnesota, Southern Illinois, UALR). She is the third Tiger to earn a spot on the conference s weekly honor roll. Mooriah Rowser and Breigha Wilder-Cochran also have earned weekly honors from the American this season. FUQUA-BEY JOINS 500-500 CLUB Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey grabbed eight rebounds in the win over East Carolina on Sunday afternoon. Those eight boards pushed her past 500 for her career, making her just the 25th player in Memphis 43-year women s basketball history to have over 500 career points and 500 career rebounds. Heading in to the first meeting with Cincinnati, Fuqua-Bey has 610 career points and 515 career rebounds. Of her 515 career boards, 60.2 percent (310) have come off the defensive glass. DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR WRIGHT With the Tigers guards struggling to score, Memphis looked to its posts for some offensive help in the Temple game. Junior forward Brianna Wright stepped up with a season-best 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting. She also added 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and her fifth double-digit rebounding night. Six players finished with a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the semester (Cheyenne Creighton, Asianna Fuqua- Bey, Ariel Hearn, Amber Holmes, Mooriah Rowser, Brianna Wright) and freshman Amber Holmes posted the highest team GPA of the fall at 3.87. The Tigers fall team GPA was 3.087. FUQUA-BEY USING FREE THROW LINE TO ELEVATE SCORING THREAT Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey has worked hard to improve at the free-throw line. As a freshman, the Chicago native shot 54.3 percent at the stripe. This season, she is shooting 83.9 percent. In addition to Brianna Wright s 14 rebounds against Temple, Asianna Fuqua-Bey added 12 rebounds, her second consecutive double-digit rebounding night of the season. The last time Memphis had two players with double digit rebounds before the Temple game? Another game where Memphis had a halftime lead, but lost -- Minnesota. ANOTHER NON-CONFERENCE MARK OVER.500 FOR MCFERRIN S TIGERS Memphis has never finished under.500 in league play since McFerrin took over prior to the 2008-09 season (including post-season tournaments) and the Tigers took a step toward making that a seventh straight occurrence by closing regular season nonconference play with a 6-5 mark. Wilder-Cochran scored 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting and tied a career-high with five steals for the second time in three games. She is the second Tiger this season to earn a spot on the weekly honor roll, joining Mooriah Rowser. DOUBLE DIGIT REBOUNDS FOR PAIR OF TIGERS Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Brianna Wright each grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss to Minnesota. Fuqua-Bey had 10 offensive rebounds in the game on Sunday, becoming just the ninth player in school history to grab 10 offensive rebounds in a game. Rowser is averaging 19.5 ppg and is shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range in the early going. She is also the team s leading free-throw attempts leader, going 12-for-15 (80.0 percent) in the early going. HEARN HITS 1,000TH CAREER POINT AND 100TH CAREER TRIPLE Junior guard Ariel Hearn opened her 2014-15 scoring line with a pair of three point field goals in the first half against Missouri State. The second triple pushed her past the 1,000 career point mark, making her the 23rd player in school history to score a grand or more. She added a pair of threes in the second half, which gave her the 100th triple of her three-year Tiger career. She is just the ninth player in school history to connect on 100 career threes. Getting to her 1,000th career point in her 64th career game means that Hearn was the fifth-fastest in RECORD BREAKDOWN Overall Conf.
