West Virginia was a member of the BIG EAST Conference the first time the Flames faced the Mountaineers (2009). Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill is familiar with Big 12 football, from his time as an assistant coach at Nebraska (1992-2004) and as the head coach at Kansas (2010-11). 2 - Liberty junior tight end Will Johnson spent two seasons (2012 and 2013) on the West Virginia football roster, but never saw game action for the Mountaineers. 3 - No current Liberty players hail from West Virginia, but the Mountaineers roster includes three Virginia natives. These include Gary Jennings (Stafford), Brendan Willis (Centreville) and Dayron Wilson (Woodbridge). Jennings and Liberty freshman DL Javon Frazier were football and basketball teammates at Colonial Forge H.S. 4 - West Virginia junior kicker Josh Lambert hit four 50+-yard field goals and an NCAA-record 16 40+-yard field goals in 2014, earning All-America honors. Meanwhile, Liberty senior kicker John Lunsford nailed six 50+-yard field goals a year ago, garnering All-America recognition of his own. Lambert made all three of his field goals during this year s season opener, while Lunsford connected from 52 yards versus Delaware State. Last Meeting with West Virginia Sept. 5, 2009 West Virginia 33, Liberty 20 Morgantown, W.Va. (Milan Puskar Stadium) The only previous gridiron clash between Liberty and West Virginia came during both teams 2009 season opener. Liberty tied the score at 10-10 on a 20-yard TD pass from Tommy Beecher to Mike Brown early in the second quarter. The Mountaineers responded with 13 unanswered points to close out the first half, taking the lead for good. Brown, who accounted for both Flames touchdowns, caught 11 passes for 157 yards and returned three kickoffs for 107 yards. Noel Devine starred for West Virginia, racking up 112 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 17 carries. Quarterback Jarrett Brown threw for 243 yards and ran for 69 more. The game was played before a crowd of 57,950 at Milan Puskar Stadium, the largest attendance ever at a Liberty football game. Today s Matchup Flames All-Time Highs vs. West Virginia 3 Rushing Performances Aldreakis Allen 10-36 2009 Receiving Performances Mike Brown 11-157 2009 Passing Performances Tommy Beecher 22-33, 210 2009 Flames vs. the Big 12 Liberty has never faced a Big 12 opponent, as West Virginia was in the BIG EAST at the time of the 2009 matchup between the Flames and Mountaineers. Liberty is scheduled to face its second Big 12 foe in 2017, when the Flames travel to Baylor. Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill has recorded one win over a Big 12 opponent as a head coach, a 52-45 Kansas victory over Colorado on Nov. 6, 2010. Flames vs. the FBS Liberty has recorded three wins over FBS opponents all-time, including triumphs over Eastern Michigan (1989), Ball State (2010) and Appalachian State (2014). The Flames are 1-4 against FBS opposition under Turner Gill. Liberty will also face FBS foe Georgia State in 2015, traveling to the Georgia Dome on Oct. 3. Flames on the Road Liberty won four of its last five road games to close out the 2014 season, highlighted by victories at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina and No. 15/15 James Madison (FCS Playoffs first round). The Flames finished 5-3 away from home in 2014, improving to 9-9 in road contests under Turner Gill. Liberty will play four straight road tilts between Sept. 26 and Oct. 17. Flames vs. West Virginia teams Liberty is 14-2 all-time against West Virginia varsity squads, including 5-0 vs. Concord, 4-0 vs. Glenville State, 0-1 vs. Marshall, 1-0 vs. West Liberty State, 0-1 vs. West Virginia, 3-0 vs. West Virginia Tech and 1-0 vs. West Virginia Wesleyan. He needs 1.5 sacks to pass Gardner-Webb s Brian Johnston (20.5) as the Big South career leader. Three more sacks would enable Uzowihe to break the program record of 22 sacks, held by Aaron DeBerry (2000-03). 3 - Nick Newman enters Saturday s game three tackles shy of 100 for his career. He would become the second active Flame with 100 career stops, joining Chima Uzowihe (102). 8 - Dante Shells needs eight receiving yards to reach 1,000 for his career. 25/50 - If Liberty wins at West Virginia, Turner Gill would achieve two coaching milestones, including his 25th victory at Liberty and his 50th win as a collegiate head coach. 50 - John Lunsford s next made 50+-yard field goal will be the 10th of his career. 318 - With 318 passing yards, Josh Woodrum would become the second Liberty QB and the third signal caller in Big South Conference history with 8,000 career passing yards. A Liberty Win Would... Be the Flames first-ever victory over a Big 12 opponent. Make Liberty the first FCS squad ever to record a win over the Mountaineers and the first non-conference team to win in Morgantown since LSU on Sept. 24, 2011. Mark the Flames inaugural triumph inside the state of West Virginia. Mark Liberty s fourth win all-time against an FBS foe and give the Flames an FBS triumph for the second straight season. Even the Flames all-time record against West Virginia at 1-1. Give Liberty a 2-0 record to start the season for the first time since 2010. Be Turner Gill s 25th victory at Liberty and his 50th triumph as a collegiate head coach. Mark the Flames fifth victory in their last six road games, dating back to the 2014 season. Flames Fast Facts Quick Hitters The Flames are currently ranked No. 13 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 15 in the STATS FCS Top 25 Poll. No. 13 is their highest national ranking since Nov. 8, 2010. Liberty was picked second (behind Coastal Carolina) in the Big South preseason poll. The Flames have captured seven Big South titles in the last eight years. They are 37-6 in conference games since the start of the 2007 season. Liberty qualified for the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the first time in 2014, defeating James Madison in the first round before falling at Villanova in the second round. The Flames have recorded nine consecutive winning records and are 71-34 since the start of the 2006 campaign. The Flames are 45-10 in home games at Williams Stadium since the start of the 2006 season. Liberty went 3-2 versus FCS Top 25 teams in 2014, highlighted by a 15-14 win at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22. That marked the Flames first-ever win over a No. 1 team in program history. Liberty has defeated three FBS teams all-time, including Eastern Michigan (1989), Ball State (2010) and Appalachian State (2014). 2015 Uniform Tracker The Liberty football program is outfitted by Nike and has 27 different helmet/jersey/pants combinations to choose from during the 2015 season.
